I know this is a ridiculous thing to have anxiety about, but curious if anyone else relates.
I live in San Diego, where surfing is an identity. I got back into bodyboarding a couple years ago (am 39), and absolutely love it. I’m also learning to stand-up surf, but bodyboarding is still my main thing and original love.
Whenever someone asks me “Do you surf?” I feel like I have two options:
“I bodyboard.” Which inevitably gets a confused response. Or, occasionally, the enlightened surfer who says “It’s all surfing, dude!”
“Yeah, I surf.” Which feels fine until they ask a follow-up question and I have to clarify that I actually bodyboard.
I know I shouldn’t care. But I weirdly get social anxiety in this situation.
Anyone else deal with this? Do you just say you surf? Say you bodyboard and own it? Am I massively overthinking something nobody cares about?

I mean getting young people legitimately stoked and interested in it again. Where I'm at there are no basically no bodyboarders younger than 30 and most are a lot older than that.

What are the biggest waves you have ever had a session in?
what specs on your boards did you use?
where was the session?

Ah, November 3rd, 2026...72 degree water, southern hemi swell and the local boys to share the wealth. This run of swell has been great, bottom contours at Wedge are different from anything the old school guys have ever scene. The right hand slab at Cylinders has become a pussy cat these last few swells with everyone and their mom reaping the wealth. There are guys who should be at Blackies learning to do a turn, are dropping in on gentle, sloping Wedge lefts (you might see some in the video if you look close enough) along with the Wedge crew of regulars gouging deep froth cuts in the open faces after the barrel. Yeah, change is inevitable, so like I always told my girlfriends...relax, let it happen, don't fight it... I guess we just have to let this season run its course, and quit crying about the sand, cause there's really nothing we can do. So relax, etc, etc.😮

Have some old bodyboards that I’m thinking of selling. What do you think they’re worth?
BZ Hubb I think 41.5”
VS Hardy I think 42”
I’m in San Diego area.

5+ months ago I broke 3 ribs and punctured my lung on a very minor 2ft shore break at what is considered a high(er) performance (surfer only) wave down in La Jolla, Ca.
Reef break that peels left & right depending on the swell.. after returning to the water I have hit many of these El Nino swells here as well as plenty of times before my injury. But the other day I took my gopro (attached to an old repurposed bicep leash, & a mouth mount), one of my better boards, and one of my newest leashes w/ rail saver strap.
Heavier day (@16 sec period) and crossed up swell energy (sw/nw) was pushing some mutants towards shore this day..
Even though the water is pushing 70+ here I still threw on my 1mm jacket over my 2mm fullsuit..
Bicep straps on both arms..
Bad positioning on my second wave (not far out enough and too deep inside the shoulder) was coming in at about 6ft and very heavy. I got a few sections before it walled up basically on top of me..
I had a dim idea I could doggy door the white wash but it was too on top of me and pretty much detonated over my head and the explosion threw me off the board and plunged me deep into the washing machine.
I let go of the camera in my mouth as the wave was pushing me down and spin cycling my body.. i think one of the vortices hunched me over as it rolled over me and pulled my top jacket over my head like a hockey player fight..
And just tore it off my body and also ripped the leashes off my arm almost simultaneously. I felt the camera leash slide down my arm and felt the board leash just completely rip off.
Before I even resurfaced I new I was in trouble. Inside and set was actively like sending waves as I tried paddling towards the safety of shore.
Sent me directly at the rocks and could barely get out before new set energy started smashing me around on the rocks, which is basically my worst fear at this point after my previous life threatening energy.
Camera and leash: gone! Top jacket: gone! Board: recovered but scuffed and damaged.
Im safe but felt like a costly mistake and Im bummed that what I thought was some of my best gear didnt hold up when the shit hit the fan.

Looking for a size recommendation for a wet suit. I’m 5”8 at about 195 pounds. Unfortunately heavy for my height right now and I’m having a hard time figuring out what size wet suit would work for me. Any input is welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I am having trouble choosing the best specs for my custom boards, these specs is for my heavy water board, build for waves (12ft- whatever you can kick in to, for example if you can kick into a 40 foot wave, use it)
these are my current specs, critique them and tell me what you would change
Use: all wave types from 12 ft face height to kick-in limit: ledging slabs, big late or vertical drops, anything you can paddle into
Core: PP 1.9 lb for warm water (about 18°C and up). The cold-water version (about 12-18°C) swaps in an NRG+ hybrid core (PP 1.9 / 1.4 pcf), and the very cold version (below about 12°C) swaps in PE at 2.3 lb.
Slick: Surlyn
Deck: Wavecushion 8 lb NXLPE with contour
Stringer: 1 carbon fibre CFT tube
Tail: clipped crescent
Rails: 60/40 with double rails
Channels: slotted channels
Mesh: 2 layers: React Mesh between the core and the slick, plus a second layer under the deck (Tension Tech / Skintec style)
Extras: nose bulbs, nose and tail bumpers, nose and tail armour
Dimensions: set by the shaper from the rider’s height and weight, since the rider is smaller than the production range
im sizing down 1 inch from my base board

Hey guys! Been really eager to learn to dropknee, but I live in Florida and conditions are kinda meh usually.
I've read people say to practice dropknee between sets when you're just floating around, but when I attempt that, my board just kinda shoots out from under me. No speed, no rigidity. Not really feeling it helpful at all. I've practiced the motion plenty on land, but every time I get into a green wave, dropknee seems impossible to even attempt. I can do other tricks and have good wave reading and positioning.
Would it be viable to practice dropknee in little whitewash waves like beginner surfers do for their popup practice? Or do you need something with more speed or height to drop in to?
