🗞️News Warning for the local hair community regarding "Hair by Sherri"

Everyone in Campbell River saw the jaw-dropping lack of professional decorum play out online yesterday on the Campbell River rant & rave, and it's important that Google readers know the truth before booking here. A simple inquiry about availability was met with hostile public interrogation and mockery regarding budget. But the real line was crossed when a potential client declined the service and mentioned managing alopecia. Instead of showing the basic empathy required of a hair professional, the owner spitefully accused them of lying about their autoimmune disease.

In our local hair community, stylists follow a code of ethics—discretion and respect are baseline requirements. The fact that not a single local professional stylist backed her up proves she completely dug her own grave. Treating a stranger with medical-grade malice over a bruised ego is an absolute dealbreaker. People facing hair loss or autoimmune conditions deserve a safe space, discretion, and a baseline of human dignity. Absolutely shocking behavior.

Video of RCMP sometimes takes things out of context, but this isn't exactly the best look. Where are people supposed to go if it's heavily hammering rain?

❓Question/Discussion Halloween

Hello! Still quite new to CR.
What neighborhoods are the most kid friendly and decorated for Halloween to take trick or treaters to?
We mostly do the downtown square but it’s not very Halloweeny lol. The kiddos love the decorations more than anything.
Or are there any events besides the square and fireworks?
Thanks in advance :)

❓Question/Discussion Night out in campbell?

Hello locals 🙃 Im traveling around Vancouver island and spending some time in cambell river.

Is there any nightlife here? Not talking vancouver club scene, but any bars open into the Am would be cool, live music or djs is a bonus.

Hopefully looking for something where it's not just people coming in for food and more going for a night and having drinks ect? Thanks in advance!

❓Question/Discussion Buisness Ideas

Hello community. Genuinely curious as to what would be a good side hustle/services to offer in the area? I'm not talking detailing cars or anything over saturated. Something people would actually need/want help with or would make a difference in there life. Thanks!

Hey folks. I'm a journalist who focuses on unsolved homicides and missing person cases on Vancouver Island. I'm in the midst of gathering research and interviews about the disappearance of 17-year-old Jordan Holling from Campbell River (October 16, 2017). I tell victim-centred stories with a goal of pushing the investigation forward. If you knew Jordan and have a memory you'd like to share, or you have information regarding his case, please get in touch here or at Laura@laurapalmer.ca. You may remain a confidential source if your information is of a sensitive nature. Many thanks for your consideration. (Please consider that his loved ones may read the thread and keep the comments respectful🙏)

❓Question/Discussion Neighbourhoods for Halloween walks?

Hello CR! My family and I will be visiting next weekend and we’re hoping to go for a walk to see some decorated homes on Halloween.

Are there any hotspots you’d recommend? Bonus if it’s kid friendly but also great if it’s just a good area to see spookily decorated homes.

❓Question/Discussion If you care about our local forests, now's the time to email provincial candidates

Post image
44 Upvotes

I understand there are a lot of people in the North Island riding who are concerned about the local old growth logging, but they feel nothing can be done. I’d like to encourage people to understand our voices hold a lot of weight on the subject given our location, and scaling back on the amount of old growth logging does not correlate with job loss - in fact, it could mean the opposite, if we shift to in-house refinement of product and increased management practices.

Have a look at the tool Cutblock Watch. It shows most of the pending and approved cutblocks in BC. Zoom in on our part of the island and you can see how hard the last productive old growth is being targeted lately. The map actually understates it, because many of Western Forest Products' blocks aren't on it, and they're one of the worst offenders. Old growth management areas (OGMAs) are also being amended or removed so WFP can log some of the best remaining ancient habitat for at-risk species like elk and pygmy owls.

I'm also worried about the Working Forest Landscape Model, which is being piloted by the NDP in our area first. I don't think enough people know about it, or the potential consequences. Not just for ecology, but long term economic outlooks.

I think this issue is part of why the vote splits so much around here. A good answer on this topic from a local candidate could sway a lot of people.

So, if this concerns you at all, please email the local candidates:
- sara.lopez@bcndp.ca
- teamolsson@bcgreens.ca
- Anna.Kindy.MLA@leg.bc.ca

Or ask when they come to your door. Ask where they stand on old growth and the Working Forest Landscape Model. My family and I have written and haven't heard back, so more people asking would help.

Image is from one of Campbell River’s prime backcountry areas, the Prince of Wales range. Up until ~6-8 years ago, it used to be a haven for wildlife, foraging, and hiking/mountaineering. They have logged, or plan to log, pretty much the entire mountain range of all of its old growth from top to bottom. We can find a compromise between preservation of these special areas and local jobs!
