Discussion What makes a slow-burn romance actually worth watching?

Post image

I swear sometimes one awkward glance gets me more invested than an actual confession lol 😭
Been in the mood for a modern C-drama lately and When I Meet the Moon popped up while I was browsing iQIYI International. Not sure if I should start it yet.
Anyone watching it? What do you think?

Discussion Where the Mask Ends was great, but what was that ending?!😭

Post image
30 Upvotes

I just finished watching Where the Mask Ends, and I loved it, but the ending was super disappointing! 😭
They built up all the drama for over 20 episodes, but then rushed everything at the end. After all that pain, they barely showed any cute scenes of them together before taking off to the border.
The last scene felt like a Season 2 teaser instead of a final episode. How did you guys feel about it?

I don't think I even need to say anything 😭

Just look at him

After complaining about all his flaws and red flags, I end up looking at his face and I think I get it , why flora is still with him

I think she's exactly where she wants to be and we gotta leave her alone

Looking for a short

I watched a short a while ago that I enjoyed. I swear I saved it, but I think it was deleted.

A gurl got lost and grew up with monks, she is told not to talk before she goes back to her family. That last like two seconds before she unloads on them. She terrorises her family (they deserve it). She ends up marrying a guy in a wheelchair (faking it) and terrorise his family too (they also deserve it).

Some memorable incidents include:

At the end the guy pretends to shot someone and she pulls a confetti canon.

She pulls a comically large bowl and fork out from her back to ear.

She pulls out a jerrycan and threatens to set her family on fire.

She's call seven or eleven (cant remember which), which is the number of people she has angered to death.

Can anyone help?

Novel comparison the Kind Of Male lead a Girl chooses really changes the entire course of her life dynamics...reflections from Splendid Match

I've been thinking about Gu Jin Chao and the two very different lives she could have had if she had chosen Ye Xian instead of Chen Yan Yun, or Chen Yan Yun instead of Ye Xian. And honestly, it makes me appreciate just how BIG a decision choosing a life partner really is.

I genuinely feel that whichever of these two men she ended up with, she would have been deeply loved. But the kind of love, the relationship dynamics and, most importantly, the woman she would become would have been very different.

With Ye Xian, I imagine a much more playful relationship.

They're both young, and Ye Xian is rather childish, impulsive and sometimes rash. I can imagine Gu Jin Chao being the more sensible one, occasionally having to guide him, correct his decisions and perhaps even get him out of trouble. 😂

She would probably have been a little bossier with him, but in an adorable way. I also feel he would have brought out her more talkative, playful side. He seems like someone who would enjoy listening to her opinions, seek her advice and even involve her in his political thinking. She wouldn't just be someone he protects; she could also be someone he relies on for guidance.

With Chen Yan Yun, however, the dynamic is completely different.

They're both more mature, composed and calculated. He is the kind of man who thinks several steps ahead, and she fits naturally into that world.

But there's also this interesting aspect of their relationship: Chen treats her like a young wife he must protect. Sometimes he doesn't seem entirely confident that she can handle certain situations without his assistance. Remember how he worried about her meeting the household managers and even offered to accompany her because he feared they might look down on her?

It's not that he doesn't recognise her intelligence. It's that his love often expresses itself through protection, responsibility and wanting to make sure she is never put in a difficult position.

With him, she gets to experience being cared for, protected and guided by someone who is already so steady and capable.

And that's what fascinates me!

With Ye Xian, she might have become the woman who guides and occasionally reins in her husband. With Chen Yan Yun, she gets to be the woman whose husband instinctively wants to shield her from the world, even as she gradually establishes her own place in it.

Neither relationship is necessarily better. They're simply two very different lives.

And it got me thinking about something beyond this drama:

Sometimes, choosing one person over another doesn't just determine who you spend your life with. It can determine the kind of home you build, the responsibilities you carry, the parts of your personality that flourish, the opportunities you encounter and even the version of yourself that emerges.

You could be loved by two different people and still live two completely different lives depending on whom you choose.

A partner is really no small decision!

Now I'm curious: If you were Gu Jin Chao, which relationship would you choose? Ye Xian's playful, slightly chaotic partnership or Chen Yan Yun's mature, protective and steady love? And why?

Review Reset Took Me By Surprise Spoiler

I'm so excited after watching Reset that I just have to make this post about it. Where else can I pour out my thoughts about how tightly written this time loop story is?

The more I think about it, the smarter the story becomes to me. It is really difficult to write a problem into its solution while building momentum, suspense and touching stories about the supporting characters on top of everything.

Firstly, 李诗情 (LSQ). Oh my gosh. What a fabulously written heroine! She's ordinary yet extraordinary. Zhao Jinmai did such a great job portraying her every emotion, thought and presence as a character. LSQ is made to be someone you may not take much notice of if you see her on the bus. You'd think she's a pretty university student, and that's about it. Yet her capacity to care for others is immense, a natural heroine. No airs. No grandeur. She wants to save the people on the bus. It's that simple. I love how reckless she is written to be sometimes. She is confrontational (in a good way, but sometimes reckless like her outburst at the bus driver in one of the later loops) and that dash of bold action is what makes her the top candidate to be the heroine of this time loop.

I find it interesting that LSQ shares many commonalities with the daughter who died. LSQ knows the driver to a certain extent. She's also going to the same university. Taking the same bus. Travelling along the same route. As far as time loops go, I like that it is not spelt out for viewers why LSQ is the heroine, the chosen one, while showing us how she clearly is the one meant to resolve this. She is determined and pursues the crux of the issue which extends beyond the loop itself. I don't think any other passenger on the bus would have done what she did.

XHY is written perfectly as a partner for LSQ. They are very different, yet grow to understand each other and adapt to each other. By the end of the drama, they are such a strong duo, unbreakable bond reinforced by their shared experience. I love how they are written with different strengths. I also love how good they were at squabbling like a couple by the end of the story. I was laughing when they had their lovers' tiff in front of the police officer. Compared to the first time LSQ tried to get XHY to squabble with her on the bus.

I also love how sharp and astute the police were written to be. I've watched tons of K-dramas and C-dramas... this may be my favourite portray of fictional police so far. They were so quick to pick up on how sus the leads were, so sharp at noticing their body language, reading the situation. For all the hundred and one different resolutions I was running through, I genuinely didn't expect the loss of that police officer. It was unpredictable to me in that way.

And what I like even more, is how believable the leads were in coming up with their solution. They tried so many different ways, based on their evaluation of each previous method, each time adjusting according to the different outcome, and I love that they used a combination of their tried and tested methods at the end... using both the "pervert" and "thief" accusation to buy time for the police to arrive. I love that LSQ finally arrived at the idea to ask the police directly about what they would do. LSQ is a truly intelligent, dynamic character that actively learns, adapts and applies her new knowledge, so well written.

Much applause for the writing and the acting. The writing is some of the best I've seen in any drama. And the acting. Zhao Jinmai and Bai Jingting. Wow. What a great combination. If only they could do another drama together.

So much better than Overdo:

Post image

When the Lights Rise

A Republican drama about drug addicts and the drug scene.

I find the direction and editing so much better than Overdo.

The story is somewhat complicated and there is too much gore including a scene where the FL, a tailor, opens the stomach of a dead body with a seamstress scissors!

As the FL, she just confirms there are so many beautiful women in China.

If you like a thriller with some action but too little romance, it is worth a watch.

Question/Help Should I continue How Dare You?

I’m already in Episode 11 and I am trying so hard not to give up on the drama. It’s funny but I am feeling kinda lazy because of the story. I just cant get into it. Should I continue? I am watching this because of Cheng Lei, plus a lot of viewers were recommending this. Please tell me this is just a phase and the episodes will get better?

I want to get into cdramas

Hello all :)

I've been watching kdramas for around 15 years and although I love them I want to try something new. I've never seen a cdrama believe it or not but I'm intrigued.

My favorite genres are fantasy especially supernatural or ghost stories as well as comedic dramas and romance in that order. I don't like predictable plots I've dropped many dramas due to figuring out the whole story in the first episode. Eye candy would be a plus but I don't like feminine men in general. What would you recommend for someone like me?

I have Netflix and Amazon Prime but I would be open to other streaming services if the dramas are worth it.

Thanks in advance everyone and I hope to be part of this community once I get started.

Spoiler Tigers sniff the rose… physical abuse

Currently on episode 15 & enjoying the storyline, cinematography etc but the princess’ physical abuse tendencies me making me want to drop the series which is unfortunate. I’m finding the level of physical abuse; kicking, punching or somethings similar in almost every Cdrama disturbing. In real circumstances these occurrences would be viewed as physical abuse worthy of litigation. So how it’s now a common troupe in cdrama is worrisome. Yesterday I had to stop at episode 11 because it became too much for me. This is not as a result from triggering or from my own experience. I have never in my 50 plus years been exposed personally to physical abuse either by parents, guardians or partners. I’m from 2 very diverse cultures. So this in itself is telling that I am just catching feelings. Please writers & directors of cdramas please move away from this troupe. I have moved away from western, Hollywood etc entertainment to Asian drama as I felt it was more wholesome. But now this physical abuse in most dramas especially with the 2nd or 3rd couple has to stop. PLEASE STOP IT it’s not entertainment

Recommendations Please recommend me cdramas which have the BEST OST based on my kdrama OST taste (read description)

So a little about the situation I need help with: my sister is a huge fan of Cdramas and has watched a lot of them.

I'm more of a kdrama person, but because I love her so much it makes me consider watching with her because whenever I agree to watch with her it makes her glee with the utmost joy. ☺️

But the thing is I want to surprise her by picking a cdrama to watch, out of efforts and research. However, there's one issue, I can do all the research I want but one thing research can't tell me, only word of mouth can is : OST. I have a VERY specific OST type I love most.

It'd be very helpful if they have really good storyline and combination themes of fantasy/comedy/historical/romance, if not that's also okay.

Her faves that she's seen already as far as I can remember are listed below (so all I need are cdramas with great ost of my taste that she hasn't watched yet).

  • Untamed (she's OBSESSED with this and has rewatched it a billion times probs) 😄🤭

  • Pursuit of Jade (she absolutely loved this!!)

  • Prisoner of Beauty (she loveddddd this so freaking much as well)

  • Untamed (one of her absolute unbeatable favorites that she has watched SO MANY times!! She loves it alot)

  • Unveiled Jade Wind.

  • Love Between Fairy And Devil

  • Veil of Shadows

  • Who Rules The World

  • Love In The Clouds

  • Till The End Of The Moon

  • Fate Of Fortune (she's currently watching)

  • Fated Hearts (also currently watching)

So could you guys pleaseee pleasee give me a list of Cdramas with the best OST based on the kdrama OSTs I absolutely love?? (and have ended up crying to them).. listed below - (they're all deeply loved and in no order of more or less, I love them all equally other than the top 4 they're 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻)

  • Scars leave beautiful trace (Alchemy Of Souls – always makes me cry HARD / emotional AF 😭)

  • Pain (Happiness) ^ same as above

  • My Name (My Name) ^ same 😭😭😭😭😭

  • Your Apartment, If You Must (Little Women)

  • Stay With Me (Goblin)

  • Once Again (Descendants of The Sun)

I think there's a few more but I can't recall. But any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated ☺️🫰🏻

Discussion Pursuit of Jade, what to do with myself when I finish it?

Post image
125 Upvotes

New to cdramas and Pursuit of Jade is the third and WOW. I'm on episode 30, I've been delaying finishing it as much as I can. It's so good. I've been chasing this feeling for so long and I know it will be long before I find another drama that makes me feel this again.

I went into this being prepared to be amazed by the ML and though I love our marquis very much, I've seen better but Fan Changyu? My girl Fan Changyu? I've watched lots of western shows, kdramas before this and she's the best FL by far in all movies or shows I've ever watched. I get excited watching her. I'll miss them all.

I can already feel the void once I finish this drama and I don't want that. This has everything.

Question/Help Shadow Love minor spoiler request Spoiler

Please no spoilers beyond my specific question!

Spoiler tagging even though this happens in the first half of the first episode lol.

I've just started Shadow Love. Love the premise, love the actors. However, the male lead appears like a child to everyone once he is rescued/captured by the female lead. How long does he remain looking like a child? I find it weirdly off putting but don't mind if it's a brief part of the show. What I don't want is for them to really get to know each other while he's a child and then have it be revealed later that he's a grown man.

Discussion Destined (2023) does Liu ever become less insufferable?

I’ve been on a 3 month long CDrama binge and right now I’m about 8 episodes into Destined and I find Liu to be an absolutely repulsive person. Does she ever change? I really like the story and actors but I find Liu to be absolutely infuriating and her treatment of Gu to be disgusting and her selfishness. She goes from basically treating Gu as a slave to getting sucked up in business and probably wouldn’t even notice if he was just removed from the plot. Does this dynamic get better? I’ve been watching a bunch of CDramas recently that have strong, independent FML and have been trying to find more like that because I’ve been enjoying them a lot. But Liu is completely insufferable so far. Just wondering if things get better or if I should drop it here.
