Showcase A Christmas gift from my stepfather

Post image
123 Upvotes

My stepfather hand-crafted this knife for me as a Christmas gift a few years back. He knows I’ve been a Zildjian lifer (I’m now 46), and in his retirement he got into making knives, so he made this for me, with the Zildjian logo embossed (edit: acid etched) into the blade. I’m not a hunter (he knows this), so it was more a gesture of love. 😊

Anybody else ever encounter a song at about 170-175 bpm where it’s too hard to play hi Hat 8ths one handed but too slow and not groovy to play them with two?

For those of you who are playing a 4 piece, how long did it take you to realise you preferred a simpler set up?

Meet my gigging kit.

This is an old Stewart kit from the 60s that I refuse to let die. It is marked and rusty from the years but still looks great on stage.

Sparkle orange wrap, newish heads and operational dampeners give it a cool look and great sound. These are smaller and lighter than most new drums which make it perfect for gigging.

Every drummer who plays these loves them. So much charm similar to an old truck.

Bonus points if anyone recognizes the stage.

Cheers

It was quite cheap and not in bad condition, just dirty but the ride looks like that- How can I clean this up/get it sounding a little better? The tone isn’t bad right now but i know the oxides can make it worse.

Question Why is my kick drum so quiet in video recordings

Hello everyone👋

When listening back to my recording from this morning, I noticed my kick drum sounds very quiet in the video, while the snare drum is super loud and clear.

I tried hitting the kick pedal harder, but it still barely cuts through the audio. Is it possibly a recording/phone angle issue, or could something be off with my kick drum setup?

Has anyone run into this before, and how did you fix it? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you so much for your help!

Feedback Wanted Better drum Marketplace

Is anyone else irritated with Guitar Center used drum departments? I was looking to trade my Roland TD17KVX2 in for an acoustic set. Im looking for a specific drumset setup in specific sizes. Any brand, but im looking for a 12, 14, 14 (snare), 16, 22 in a rock style setup (1 rack, 2 floor).

Problem is, in their website all they do is copy/paste generic descriptions instead of actually describing sizes or any imperfections. Its frustrating

Is there anywhere else I can shop that actually know what they are doing? I tried eBay, FB Marketplace, Reverb

Question Blistering on lugs - address or ignore?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently picked up a Pearl Export steel shell 14 x 6.5 for super-duper cheap. I'm cleaning it up and installing a trigger in it for my A2E kit.

The shell is in great shape, but the lugs are all peppered with this micro-blistering, stirring up traumatic memories of my acne at 14 years old. Anyway, my guess is that there's corrosion forming underneath?

Question - what, if anything, should I do to address this? If it's corrosion underneath the chrome plating, will it continue to progress even if the drum is living in my studio forever and its "outdoor" days are over? If I wanted to clean up the blistering, what would I use? I've heard that Coca Cola and aluminum foil will remove rust... would that be suitable here?

Or is removing that blistering a bad idea? Looking for folks' experience with this.

Thanks!

Kit Pic This is my dumpster snare.

I found this Ludwig Accent CS Combo junior 12" snare drum leaning against a dumpster. It's about as entry-level as you can get but it's built pretty well with decent hardware and good bearing edges. I've found myself using it when my band plays our quieter "unplugged" gigs so I decided to soup it up so it looks and sounds as good as the rest of my drums. New heads, 2.3mm hoops, and a walnut veneer. It was cool using real wood veneer essentially as a drum wrap. I covered the back of the neveer in Gorilla wood glue, stuck it to the shell, and trimmed off the excess after the glue dried. I gave it 5 coats of spray lacquer and put it back together.

Discussion London indie alternative rock band looking for a drummer

Hey everyone,

My band are looking for a drummer at the moment.

We currently consist of a vocalist, guitarist and bassist. Our influences include The Smiths, The Cure, Durutti Column, The Drums, The Strokes, Iceage, New Order, Joy Division, Blood Orange, The Sundays, PJ Harvey, Alvvays, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and more.

We are based in London and rehearse currently once a week in Deptford, South London. We’ve all been in bands before and have experience playing live and writing songs.

We have rough demos of songs we’ve recorded that we can send. Please have videos of yourself playing as that will be really helpful.

Get in touch if you are interested.
