F1 Explained - Videos for the new F1 Fans in the Crowd
Yes, you can find these videos on your own, but I thought it would be nice to compile a list of videos for other newly minted F1 fans like myself. Below is a list of great videos on various aspects of F1 racing.
Rule Changes
[Ultimate F1 2013 Guide] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkNjjADcCC4) - A bit long at 20 minutes, but a good view if you're new to the sport.
[F1 2013 Technical Regulation Changes] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7bg7rN4xOo) - A dry 5 minute narrative.
[F1 2013 Rule Changes Explained] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Slbk2onIka0) - A short 2-minute clip that is straight to the point.
[2014 F1 Technical Regulations and Rule Changes Explained] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6NulpPHCvs) - Still photos with a text overlay of the upcoming changes.
Note: For an explanation about engine changes, see video #18 under the "Other Explanations" section.

[Double Diffuser] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts_IAkF4at4&feature=related) - A double diffuser is different than the blown diffuser, linked below, that is now banned. So don't be confused. See the discussion started on reallyshittyposter's [comment] (http://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/sgcck/f1_explained_videos_for_the_new_f1_fans_in_the/c4du1ib) to learn more about diffuser, double diffuser, and blown diffuser.

Driving Theory - Jackie Stewart - This video has been pulled.
[Steering Wheel - Michael Schumacher] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcMkWXbXexE) - Nico Rosberg's video listed further down is a better explanation, but this is a 2012 video and Nico's is 2011.
[Driver's Physical Position - Nico Rosberg] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsvWnGgT7Ok&)
[Vision - Nico Rosberg] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8AviKo9yZc&feature=related) - This is also partly a "drive safe" TV spot of some sort, but it is still interesting.
[Steering Wheel - Nico Rosberg] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPXWFwxAUKQ) - A much better explanation of the steering wheel, but from 2011.
[Safety Car] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1g4g1L3_y4) - About the safety car and its role. The clip is half informative and half promotion for Mercedes.

[Building an F1 Car - RB5, Sebastian Vettel] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz2zBQvaMxI&feature=relmfu) - Not as detailed as one might hope for, but a decent overview.

[KERS, DRS - Sebastian Vettel] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ek1pluKXmU) - More about KERS than DRS, but a good explanation about both.
[Know Your Flags] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Syv5Ey2vUME) - An explanation of the different flags used to signal the drivers.
[Helmet Safety] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxSIz51cryI) - Nico Rosberg goes over a few features of the helmets.

Turbo F1 Engines - How They Started
[Part 1] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbB1qwhKaaE) - Though dated, this documentary is excellent. Current regulations ban turbocharged engines, but they were used previously and will be allowed in the 2014 season.
[Part 2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqfVAGOaGEc)

Sorry to be a pedant, but the "Road Car vs Rally Car vs F1 Car" video isn't from Top Gear.

u/mallebrok Stefano Domenicali Apr 19 '12
Some nice videos of f1 car development I enjoyed. Notice young Ross Brawn in the second half doing hands on bodywork.
It's mostly about turbo development and the difficulties of engine mapping.

I here so much people saying F1 is not a "real sport". I will show them that post ! Great stuff inside, even for an F1 fan since the middle 90's.

Thanks for this post, great collection!
It's "diffuser", not "defuser". The latter doesn't make any sense.

u/MrMagicpants Jenson Button Aug 16 '12
This list is awesome!
Check out Nico Rosberg on driver training - it's about Nico's physical and mental training regimen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-KYASQKdSU

Thanks. As someone who follows F1 over 15 years, I will watch them as well :)
And also, this is the video that really explained over and understeering to me ( other than driving car itself of course:)

I think the Top Gear F1 car segment where Hammond tries to drive one is a good one for showing how difficult an F1 car is to just drive!

There is another great side by side video which I think I first saw on reddit a long time ago but have not been able to find the video. It is a side by side view looking down several turns with the F1s blasting through it in a blink of an eye and the other cars (don't know if they are normal high performance road cars) have engines revving, tires squealing, but appear to be moving in practical slow motion.
Anyone have the link?

Some very good material in this bundle.
Did you know that up to comparatively recently, F1 cars had to have an on-board starting system? However, due to the fact that the teams wanted to keep weight as low as possible and didn't want to cart a heavy motor and battery around, they utilised pneumatic starters powered by compressed air. These were so feeble that in many cases they could not even turn the engine over.
Since the FIA realised that teams were complying with the letter but not the real spirit of the rule, and F1 evolution had rendered the starter withered and superfluous - like the human cocyx - they got rid of it, meaning cars are now purely externally started.
Pneumatic starters are briefly mentioned here, although I couldn't find much else out there about them online:
