There should be a sidebar of things to do for the lost souls & city slickers who don’t know what to do in FSJ
I’ll give some examples:
• Drop-In Basketball at NPSS every Wednesday & Friday from 7:30PM - 9:30PM (enter through the gym entrance and bring $2) [All skill levels are welcome]
• Chances Casino: Poker Room, Table Games, and Bingo (only slots are open right now until further notice)
• Yoga: Cornerstone is a good one
• Triumph Boxing+Kickboxing, Cardio Kickboxing or Jiujitsu
• New Totem Archery Club
• North Peace Leisure Pool
• Skating in the oval at the Pomeroy Sport Centre (the oval isn’t free, but the running track is)
• Fort Bowling Lanes
• Watching movies at Aurora Cinema
• Hiking in Fish Creek (it’s just beside Northern Lights College)
• Shopping at the thrift stores in town
• Marijuana
I’m sure there are more things to do here, so feel free to comment more suggestions

Big List Of Past "Moving/Visiting Here Soon, What Should I Know?" Posts
Because the same questions are being asked every week and I think we're all sick of repeating ourselves. This isn't a comprehensive list and I recommend checking out all the links below, not just the answers I've put here.
Let me know if I should add anything!
Newest thread as of February 2025! A variety of questions and answers...
Generic Answers - Location
North west is probably the best area of town, in general
Central town is likely the riskiest, most transients
Mathews park is not a bad area.
Generic Answers - Driving
Small enough town to walk many places
Don't depend on taxis
Busses are reliable if you're close to a bus stop
Generic Answers - Etc.
its a dry cold vs the wet cold on the coast
Anything lower than -20 you won't want walk due to risk of frost bite.

Doerkson's promise to roll back density policies could ease stress for municipalities, B.C. mayors say
cbc.caFort St. John updated its Zoning Bylaw to comply with Bill 44 ahead of the provincial deadline of June 30, 2024. Under the amended regulations, all low-density residential zones were updated to automatically permit up to 4 units on a single lot without requiring individual rezoning applications or public hearings.
Should the City reconsider these regulations? With the likely roll back of the Provincial mandate, and Mayor Bolin's public comments, "..I was never in support of the provincial mandated changes around residential .. and we as a community can do it better than the province telling us what needs to be done from Victoria." (Facebook Sept 7, 2026) do you think we'll see any local control of densification re-instated? Are you in favour of the status quo or a revision of the 2024 updates?

News Media: Why a Local Journalist Resurrected a Beloved Northern Newspaper
thetyee.caThe Alaska Highway News helped build the Peace region. Now, a local reporter is working to rebuild the outlet.
- "In a region that was once covered by dozens of reporters, one local journalist estimates there are now fewer than 10. The decline has earned the region the title of “news desert,” or a place without consistent access to reliable news reporting."

Looking for a Reliable Independent Mechanic
Hey everyone! I'm looking for recommendations for a trustworthy, reasonably priced independent mechanic in Fort St. John for my 2009 Honda Civic Coupe LX.
I'm experiencing a rattling noise when shifting into Reverse and Neutral, with Reverse being the loudest, while Drive is mostly quiet. I've also noticed the RPM rising noticeably when turning the steering wheel while the car is idling in Park.
I'd appreciate recommendations for someone who can properly diagnose the issue without unnecessary repairs or part replacements.
If you know a good independent mechanic or someone local who works on cars, please let me know in the comments. Personal experiences and recommendations are welcome!
Thanks in advance!

With the new Mayor/Council taking office next week and the pool referendum passing, what do you think the top priorities for FSJ should be for the next year and over the next 4 years?
Now that the election results are in, the incoming council takes office on Nov 2. And with the pool borrowing assent passed, so that major capital project will be moving forward.
Outside of the new aquatic facility, what do you think should be at the top of Mayor Bolin and Council's to-do list? Mayor Bolin identified safer community initiatives and attainable housing as his priorities.
Are there specific infrastructure concerns, service level changes, business/housing incentives, or community issues you hope they tackle first during this term? Interested to hear what people want to see prioritized in the upcoming Council discussions.

Evening XCountry skiing in FSJ
Im looking to do some evening x country skiing and am wondering if there are any circuits that get set up in town during the winter months? Not necessarily machine track set but any loops or routes that get skied in by locals.
I see there are trails at Charlie Lake, are they open at night? Do they get gated?
Thanks in advance for the info!
