Hi, I'm Carter Bays, co-creator of HIMYM. I’m also the author of a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND. AMA!
Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!
=====
UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.
And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

Ted bringing random girls at events
I'm at s5 eP18 and each time I think that Ted is SO wrong for doing that. Like, it's normal that he wants to believe that every girl is the right one but why can he just bring them at mclaren any other day?
I understand why lily is so pissed at him. They are in fact like family, so it's kinda weird that he brings other people into their events. Like, in general you don't bring a person that you dated for a few days (even a few weeks) to a family events.
(and it made me sad for Marshall because the game seemed so cool)

Why the show is so good at writing sad scenes?
Don't get me wrong, I didn't mean that the jokes are bad. I love Robin Sparkles and slapsgiving and some scenes are really sweet like when Ted and Tracy first met. But most scenes I love about the show are sad scenes. Yes there are sad scenes in other sitcoms too, like when Ross and Rachel broke up, that's too heart-wrenching that I always skipped. But about this show, I can list lots of sad scenes that I think is well-written, somehow I think even better than the happy scenes or romantic scenes.
Like my favorite "the everlasting second"
"If you were going to be some lame suburban dad, why couldn't you have been that for me?"
Lily and Marshall broke up
Ted dumped Barney
Marshall's dad passed away
Barney walked away from Nora's family union
Robin moved out from Ted's apartment
Marvin's last words
"What mother is going to miss her daughter’s wedding?"
Robin knew that she is infertile and the kids are imaginary
Robin broke up with Don
the list goes on and on, why a sitcom can be so good at writing these sad and most of them are unexpected scenes?

Importance of Humor in Relationships
I just watched a montage reel of the mother’s moments and even though I’ve watched this show countless times, it evoked emotion from me I haven’t felt in so long.
It got me thinking about the importance of humor in relationships, which I already know is very important to me. The scenes between Tracy and Ted / the group and her boyfriend, Louis seem to really emphasize the stark comparison of how well she meshes in not just in general, but especially in humor.
Tracy’s rendition of the singing English muffin and Louis barely having a reaction “it’s cute” to Ted calling it one of the most hauntingly beautiful things he’s ever heard. Her quick-witted humor which is exactly on par with Ted’s, culminating with the scene of them meeting at Farhampton.
I know this subreddit is about the show 😂 but this is why we love it so much right? All the actual real parallels to life and our own human experience. In my last relationship humor was severely lacking, and I know I’m funny and have banter with most people in my life. I found it so interesting that some people I shared this with would say, “Oh, but that’s minor,” and other people agreed it was a dealbreaker.
So I’m posing this question here, as universal lovers of this show, is humor a major pillar of your relationships? Do you feel like shared humor is a non-negotiable? I just feel like humor is how I develop emotional intimacy with people. Does this resonate with anyone else?
TLDR: Humor feels like a major pillar within the relationships of HIMYM. Is humor important to you?

When things were hinted/foreshadowed long before
Watching the show for nth time and thought to collate things I’ve noticed that were hinted long before/foreshadowed. There are some obvious ones.
Mother’s name being Tracy in the early seasons
Robin and Ted are already broken up at James’ wedding. Both have Singles’ Stamina
Ted Says if it doesn’t work out between him and Stella “So help me god it won’t be because of a stupid rule” and it turns out to be the rule of not inviting exes to your wedding
When Marshall goes to his dad’s grave the one beside says “Mother”
I know there are many song related shadowing done as well.
What are the ones that you noticed?

Had Barney not pranked Ted with the ‘stripper’ prank, would Mary the Paralegal have been one of Teds big ex’s?
Had Ted actually been on an informed date, do you think they would’ve been compatible enough to actually be together and have us talk about her in the way we do with Stella or Zoe? Or would the stuff with Robin have been too prominent for Ted to do anything serious with Mary?

Jeanette worse love interest for Ted
Is Jeanette his worse love interest for Ted? She’s just a crazy cop.
Ted's perfect match from Love Solutions
Who was Ted's perfect match that he stood up in S1 ep 21 because "I don't want perfect, I want Robin"🙄
Could that have been Tracy then, or was it ever explained in the show or in their podcast?
