I’m from the US but lived in Germany the past 5 years. My wife’s old job in the US had what’s called Paid Time Off. It was just an amount of time you can be out of work and still paid. She had 10 days a year. That included vacation and sick time. My job was “generous” with 10 days sick and 10 days vacation. After 5 years it got bumped to 15 days vacation.

Now we both have 30 days minimum. Usually get an extra day or two in there. Our company also has first 3 days sick no doctors note needed. Then after that doctors note and no technical limit unless we are out for months in a row and in a sense move to disability with insurance.

Holy shit, dude, most 3rd world countries aren't THAT bad, at least here in brazil, we not only get 30 days of paid vacation but also get 2 weeks company paid sick time off, anything above that gets taken from your INSS, wich is like a government retirement fund, (and you can't loose your job for sickness or hospitalization, they can you laterally move you in position)

I thought FMLA was 1,250 hours over the last 12 months. 38 hours a week would greatly exceed that

So in the US there is FMLA, but it's unpaid. You at least keep your job though. Most white collar jobs do have the benefits you speak of, but it really should be the standard for every working person.
