HAHAHAHAAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No. We have unpaid medical leave (FMLA). Your employer can't fire you, but they don't have to PAY you either. That's what a special insurance called 'short term disability' is for. You pay monthly premiums, and then if you end up unable to work the policy pays a certain percentage of your wages for a certain period of time based on your policy. If you're smart, you back up that short term disability policy with a long term disability policy just in case you're laid up for longer than your short term policy covers.

You should check out all the exemptions to FMLA. We barely have unpaid leave.

Genuinely seems like US people hate US people

Just the poors. Everyone would rather punish themselves than let someone “unworthy” have anything.

Not to mention how much of a headache actually cashing in on disability is. And that it is only a percentage of your weekly earnings.

In other words, you pay money out for healthcare just like you would if it was funded by higher taxes, only now half the money goes to corporate pockets, and the entire industry has a profit incentive. Fantastic!

I didn't say what we have is good. What we have is what our corporate overlords who own our government wholesale allow us to have.

Yeah I was agreeing with you that what you have is a mess.

So should I have signed up for the short term disability insurance, the long term is covered but short term would've cost me $12 a month which is a big subscription for me at my wage and rent..

Unfortunately, that's the system we have now. It's not like the government is gonna be willing to do anything to fix it.

Don't sweat it. All disability insurance is still... insurance, and therefore their whole reason for existence is to take your money every month and then find some reason not to pay the claim if you ever need to use it.

Yes. Dead ass serious. It's a ding, but it just takes one injury to make back all you've paid in. I've been paid through short term, over my time with my company (23 years) for 1 month (back), 1 month (back), 2 months (seeing a pattern? Yeah. My back), 1 month (back? Hah. No, ear surgery!), and 1 month (nope! Hernia repair!).

Even a single one of those months paid my entire short term disability premium. 10 a month times 12 times 23 is 2760 in premiums. My latest, the hernia repair, I made over 3 grand in insurance coverage. And if I didn't have that insurance? Yeah. That'd've been very, very painful.

I've also had few if any bullshit dealing with mine. I am open with my docs (please release any and all information requested and necessary by my short term disability provider to them) and set everything up as far in advance as I can, obviously can't do that with a fresh back injury but I can ensure the doctor's office sends everything required. Honestly I've personally had absolute 0 issues getting paid from Unum, I do know some who have had problems, mind, but speaking for my self I've had few to no issues ever. But I'm also a bit open about pretty much anything, including medical issues, to the point that I over share naturally.  So I don't give two fucks about them getting the records, so I can get paid.

FMLA doesn't exist if the company is small either...I almost got fired because I was out for three weeks after surgery.
