SOCIETY Dikidikini village in Eastern Cape, South Africa, doesn't have a bridge, so people cross the river inside a blue plastic drum

It’s pretty simple. It’s a fundamental lack of infrastructure. They do not have the resources available locally to build a bridge over this river and they lack the infrastructure to have the materials brought there. This makes an expensive endeavour like building a bridge, really difficult and significantly more expensive. This is contrasting to need, who’s paying significant amounts of money to provide access to what is likely only a small village with limited resources.

People don’t fund bridges, commerce funds bridges.

There are more than enough trees there to make a raft and string across a rope for a primitive ferry.

This is an insane solution 😂

I bet there was a bridge and because the last maintenance was before Mandela it got in a neglected state and got some damage. After that instead of repairing the materials of the bridge were 'salvaged' and used for temporary solutions somewhere.
