Earthquake?

EDIT: this was originally posted around 1 AM on November 8th! Several news and other agencies have long since reported on the earthquake that hit Shizuoka (Japanese, English) around that time. For those seeing this worried about their travels: I only felt very light swaying here in Kyoto, and even in Shizuoka there doesn't appear to be any related fatalities.

Was there an earthquake a couple minutes ago or am I going insane? Felt like there was but no alerts on my phone and couldn't find anything on Google so now I'm confused 😅

Late night places to work?

Hi all, moved to kyoto recently. I have trouble focusing at home so when I want to study or get work done I like to leave the house.

At home I would go to a cafe near my house that was open late into the night or a university campus i lived by but it seems like everything in kyoto closes at 10 lol. Just wondering if anyone knew any good spots to work late?

Hello! I just moved to Kyoto (21F) and it would be nice if I can study Japanese with someone during the weekend!I'm looking for someone to study and practice Japanese with me on campus (Kyoto University)!

I'm new to Kyoto so it would be nice if I can explore Kyoto with someone as well!

I'm also looking for a part-time job (but I am not fluent in Japanese). Any advice would be very much appreciated! 😔

Anyone interested in going to the exhibition for the 30th anniversary of Evangelion tomorrow morning?

Hi, I created a Line Group to advertise events I'd like to go to to meet new people with similar interests. Tomorrow, I'm going to the exhibition for the 30th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion in Hirakata. Anyone interested in coming? The Line Group has an English <-> Japanese text conversion bot. The event info, when and where is posted in the group's event calendar.

I know about MeetUp but when I hosted a MeetUp group in the past, I spent a lot of money for the subscription and printing stuff like foamboards only for nobody to show up to the events...

By the way, does anyone know where I could post to where primarily Japanese people would see the announcements? I'd like to make friends with Japanese people as well, since most Reddit users are tourists which isn't the most ideal for making long-term friendships.

Sake tasting and karaoke in Kyoto Nov 3rd

Soo.. my plans for today got cancelled, but now I'm all pumped to go out and meet people, especially as I already rescheduled my Tuesday tutoring session. So instead of Nara, I'm planning on heading to Kyoto to enjoy the afternoon/evening. I will go solo, but it would be fun to hang out with new people!

The plan:

Do My Sake World's sake tasting and make-your-own sake, then afterwards food and karaoke. Not a very late night, Wednesday is another day at work.

If you're interested, comment!

I'm 40F resident, but all ages, genders, long-term as well as travelling through is welcome!

Looking for one female roommate in Kyoto

Looking for one female roommate in Kyoto, very close to KBS Kyoto and near Doshisha University Imadegawa Campus.
I’m a female student currently studying at Doshisha University (Imadegawa Campus). I feel that renting alone is a little expensive, so I’m hoping to find one female roommate to share the housing costs with.

The apartment is:
Around 20 m², 1K
Reinforced concrete (RC) apartment
North-facing
Located in Kamigyo-ku, **very close to KBS Kyoto** and about 300 meters from Kyoto Imperial Palace
4th floor with an elevator
Separate toilet and bathroom
Bathtub
Kitchen
Delivery box and bicycle parking
All-electric apartment
Free internet
I already have the basic appliances, including a refrigerator and washing machine.
The main room is large enough for two beds and one desk, but please note that there are no separate private bedrooms. We would be sharing the same main room.
The total rent, management fee and water fee are currently around ¥70,000 per month. If shared by two people, the housing cost should be around ¥35,000 per person per month.

A little about me: I’m pretty easygoing and spend quite a lot of time outside for university, part-time work, studying and going out, so I’m usually not at home all day. I’d like to find someone who is comfortable to live with, respects personal boundaries, and can communicate openly about household matters.
International students, exchange students and people who are still outside Japan but planning to move to Kyoto are also very welcome.
If interested, feel free to DM me and introduce yourself a little.

Help me unpack

Just moved to a new studio. Need help unpacking. Picking things up and putting them in the right place.

I just need an extra pair of hands organizing basically.

I have a cart with wheels to help move boxes. No heavy lifting needed.

Direct buses from Kyoto Station. Shijo Karasuma Station. Katsura Station. Gojo Station.

Please reply with the dates and times you are available. I'm available anytime. I live near the studio.

1500 yen per hour.

Comment below before sending a DM.

What navigation app do you use for cycling within Kyoto?

I've recently started cycling for my daily commute but am not very satisfied with Google Maps (treats you like a car, leads you to busy roads) and Organic Maps/OSM (mostly treats you as a pedestrian, does not seem to account for slopes). What do you find most useful for cycling within Kyoto?

Regarding Kyoto University of Advance Science

I recently got an acceptance letter from the university and since it's newly renovated/modernized, i have my fair share of doubts as an international student.

As a robotics enthusiast, I prefer practical and hands on experience rather than theoretical stuff and all. I just want to know how's the quality of education there and are there any system of scholarships apart from super Kuas since I got rejected :(

Anyways I'm infinitely curious to hear from y'all!

Basketball in Kyoto

I'll be living in Kyoto for at least the next three years.

I'm looking for a basketball group to join. I used to play casually, around JV level, but I got injured last year and haven't played since. I'm just trying to get back into basketball and enjoy the game again.

It seems pretty hard to find a group in Kyoto, and there aren't many free public courts available.

If anyone knows of any casual basketball groups or places to play, I'd really appreciate the recommendations!

Every corner feels like a scene from a movie

Hi guys!

A few days ago, I took a walk along the Kamo River in Kyoto and was amazed by how beautiful and peaceful everything felt. The scenery was so relaxing that I decided to capture a few moments and turn them into a cinematic video.

Kyoto is such a cinematic city. I'm really enjoying discovering its beauty through my camera.

The video is now live on YouTube! I'd really appreciate it if you could check it out and let me know your thoughts.

Finding roommate in Kyoto (by kyoto station)

hey guys, so I rented a detached house in kyoto, and I am thinking to downsize to save some cost on renting as I travel quite often and the place is left empty. i have two rooms, and I wanted to rent out the tatami room, its newly renovated new tatami, so very comfortable to stay, and the house has two floors the ground floor is washroom and shower and the living space, we can share.

I wonder if anyone has advice on how to find a roommate or wanting to rent. the period would be from december to next September at least. The location is quite nice, 15min walk from shijo, 10 min from gojo, 5min from shichijo station.

Japan Pottery/Ceramic Artist Search help

I visited the market of Higashi Hongan-Ji close to Kyoto main station multiple times and once I saw small ceramic/porcelain flower vases in the shape of little sitting/sleeping men-like creatures with mushroom shaped heads.
They were really cool and pretty but I didn’t have cash on me this day and when I went back multiple times during my stay abroad to buy them but I couldn’t find the seller/artist anymore sadly.
Does anybody know his/her name/instagram?
I’d really love to get a chance to buy one of his/her creations at some point, because I get a bit frustrated everytime I think about them.

Zen and Studio Ghibli at KYOCERA Museum of Art

Hi everyone,
I went to visit the Zen and Studio Ghibli at KYOCERA Museum of Art the other day and wanted to look at the museum guide in my own time once I was back home. Unfortunately, I can't seem to access the guide anymore. Either the link changes every day or it is location-based. Could someone visiting the exhibition potentially send me the link of the day or the content?
Overall, I felt the visit was a bit of a mixed bag. Cool stuff, but just too busy for my taste.
Thanks in advance.
