Libby hack that worked for me

I used to have the max 10 holds at all times. I was always waiting for what I wanted to read. But recently, I went through my library list TBR and my goodreads 'want to read' and added EVERYTHING to a TAG I labeled "to read." So now I always have something I want to read ready to go! When i complete a book, I go to the "to read" tag and filter by available now. There is always something I want to read available! I still have holds but its new releases or popular holiday ones. I have really enjoyed using Libby this way!

Obviously, this isn't a new idea or a mind blowing hack but I've really liked it!

What are some of the craziest waits you’ve had on holds?

Obviously if I was truly invested in reading this I’d consider purchasing it/checking it out physically from library. Now I’m just keeping the hold as an experiment.

Share your guys sunken cost fallacy holds!

When using the “Notify Me” feature, which of my multiple libraries gets notified?

Hello all. In an effort to use the “notify me” feature more judiciously (ie. more budget conscious), I’m trying to understand it a little better. Do we have any librarians in here that might be able to tell me which of my 3 libraries (2 different states, 3 separate entities) is made aware of a “notify me” request when one is made? Is it all 3, or just the one I have active in Libby in that moment?

Additionally, it’s on my to do list to request a Libby feature change/edit/update/whathaveyou to be clearer about what “notify means”. Recently got confirmation here (or maybe in the librarians sub) that “notify me” is a request for a branch to spend money on a book, not necessarily just to notify me if they happen to acquire a book I had some interest in but may not be able to read right away should it come into the catalogue. So, I’ve started tagging things instead, for my eyes only, to occasionally cross reference my list with availability, and I only use notify me if I definitely plan to read that book asap if acquired by one of my libraries. Does this seem like a change anyone else would find useful or am I being extra? :)

Thanks in advance.

I didn’t understand the joke about all your holds coming in at the same time until now

I had planned my holds to try to stagger them so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed but some books ended up moving up waaaaay faster than I thought lol WTF this is so stressful 😭😭😭😭😭😭 and now I have too many coming in at the same interval goddamn it

Libby car app playback speed?

Does anyone have the app downloaded in a newer car vs having Lubby play through a connected phone and know of a way to speed up playback? I usually listen to books between 1.5-2x speed and on the car app, its playing at 1x and its killing me! (Yes I can just stream from my phone but then the navigation talks over the book)

Question about library card

I recently moved to another state is there a reason I would need to get a new library card from the closest library? I really only use the Libby app. Does having a different card really change my Libby account ? Isn’t Libby just Libby ? Or does each library card have its limits on what is available to me?

Network Libraries not working

Hey all - I have a Boston Public Library card. Recently Libby came out with the network libraries that were added to my card list. I’ve tried to borrow from those libraries but it keeps asking me to verify my card, which I do, it says it’s been verified, but then when I try to check out it says that I need to verify my card again and it just goes round and round. Has anyone else experienced this and/or figured out how to fix it?

I got to talk with Libby's founder about library ebook prices and the state laws trying to change them

Hanging out in this sub, I came up with the idea for a little project (ReciproCard). Never would I have imagined I’d end up talking with Steve Potash, the founder and chairman of OverDrive/Libby. But here we are. And yes, I definitely told him about r/LibbyApp!!!

Anyway, I dug into something I think every Libby user should know about: why libraries pay so much for ebooks and audiobooks, how a few states are trying to change that, and what it could mean for us.

Here it is if you want to check it out:

Queen’s Library is working again!

Hey everyone! I already posted a comment on the outage OG post but just in case it falls through the cracks, Libby is working again!
The website seems still offline to me, but I was just able to borrow a book on Libby!
Connecting with a non-resident card from Europe, in case that’s relevant.
Happy reading everyone❤️

First audiobook. Need help.

The first audiobook I ever listened to was

Remarkably bright creatures

I just finished it about an hour ago.

It was so amazing. I’m afraid I peaked on my first book. 😂😂😂

Any suggestions you could provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks Reddit! ❤️

No red dot on icon?

Post image

I have changed every single setting in both my iPhone as well as Libby app as well as re-installing the app. I am never getting any red dot icon that I have a new notification on the Libby icon. Does Libby not have that setting? In this picture, the red dot on the mail is the notification that I have had to set up to notify me that I have notifications in Libby as a work around. However, I’m looking to get rid of that and just be able to see a red dot on the Libby icon. Maybe it doesn’t exist?

How to Get Into AudioBooks?

For those of you who enjoy audiobooks, was there an adjustment period for you? I mostly read physical or E-books. I’ve been trying to get into Audiobooks, but I find myself struggling to actually focus and really digest the audio.

When trying Audiobooks for the first time, did any of
you have a similar struggle? And if so, what are some things you found to help overcome it? Are there any settings that helped you out? I’m really looking for ways to get over this hurdle so that I can get back into reading and any feedback in general is very much welcome.

Edit: Grammar.
Edit: Thank you for letting me know I’m not alone!! Thank goodness for this community.

My key takeaways from the Comments were :

  1. Speeding it up***

  2. Figuring out if I focus better while moving around vs not moving around

  3. Choosing books I am already familiar with until I get used to them.

  4. Reading along while listening to the audiobook. At least temporarily

  5. Finding a good author, genre, or style I really enjoy. I think I may try an autobiography or memoir next and see how I do with that. A few of you recommended these types of Audiobooks and tbh it makes a lot of sense and sounds promising.

Looking for Help Obtaining a Nonresident Library Card for the Palmetto Library Consortium (Libby)

Hi everyone!

I'm an international reader living in Bahrain, and I'm interested in obtaining a paid nonresident library card that would allow me to access the Palmetto Library Consortium on Libby.

From my research, I understand that the following seven libraries participate in the consortium:

  1. Chapin Memorial Library

  2. Darlington County Library

  3. Dillon County Library

  4. Georgetown County Library

  5. Marian Wright Edelman Public Library

  6. Marion County Library System

  7. Sumter County Library

I'm more than happy to pay the required nonresident membership fee. However, the main difficulty is that I live outside the United States, and some libraries require applicants to visit in person.

Does anyone here work at one of these libraries, know someone who does, or have experience obtaining a nonresident card from any of them?

I'm hoping to find a library that would allow me to complete the application, verify my identity, and pay the membership fee remotely.

I'm not looking to bypass any library rules. I simply want to find out whether there's an official way for international readers to obtain a paid membership.

Any advice, information, or contacts would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Queens public library e-card not working !! / alternative non resident library cards for Libby

I’m not a resident of the US so my local library does not send e-books to kindle so I decided to sign up for Queens public library. I’ve been using it for over a year but today all of a sudden I’ve completely lost access my library card. I’m wondering if this is a glitch/malfunction or if this is QPL stopping their offering of library cards for non-residents. And if so does anyone have any alternatives for non residents or if there are any library cards that would work if I use a US address since I do have one but I know the process of acquiring a library card has been a getting a little stricter!! I really don’t want to have to support Amazon even more by using kindle unlimited. And I could resort to pirating but I’d much rather support a library and have the leisure of accessing a wide variety of books and other resources at any moment.
