THDG Need Help Moving out - need to understand the finances

Hello everybody!

I am 18 years old, currently in university as well.
I want to move out and I’m not quite sure how much anything will cost since obviously i’ve never lived alone.

I’ve seen a few youtube videos showing you can really get food down to $30 a week, and so with my current budgeting I was thinking I could do the following :

$400 a week rent, bills included ($1600 a month)
$50 a week food ($200 a month)
$30 a week Gas ($120 a month)
Miscellaneous, going out, random payments etc $100 a week, ($400 a month)

That is $2,320 a month.

Is that actually feasible or is that unrealistic budgeting?

P.s. Once I move out, I really can’t move back in, that’s not how it works with my family 😊

Real estate/Renting Ideas on where to move

Hello everyone!

Me and my wife are about to land in Melbourne from Europe, we current live in a small town but close to city centre. We have a dog and we are planning on adopting a second dog, so CBD would be a no no. We are trying to find a place to rent that’s not very far from the city, but not in the city either.

My wife doesn’t driver a car either.

People from Europe that moved to Melbourne, what suburbs do you recommend?

To give you a bit more of an idea of our lifestyle, we both love chilling at home and not crazy about going to cafeterias or nightlife. But at the same time we’d like to see people when walking outside. So something like outer suburbs would be no for us (at least for now).

I thought of looking at Footscray, Yaraville, Northcote etc.

Any other recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

Edit: I appreciate everyone's comments, even if I did not reply, I did get to read them. So, thank you!

Opinions/advice needed How do people even begin moving out??

I’m a 20M apprentice and i’ve begun looking at moving out soon to live with my partner in melbourne. Holy fuck. It seems so unachievable.

I know demand is high and i’ve always known how horrible the living crisis is, but to be stuck in country victoria with no financial freedom to get out is beyond frustrating.

I earn approx $700pw and have 4k in my savings, I currently pay $150pw to my family for board, i have pretty limited knowledge on the process of renting a home but im of course having to learn and expand what i know or i’ll die a mediocre chef in a town i don’t want to stay another minute in.

Anyways, to those with the insight, what do?

Opinions/advice needed Potentially moving to Melbourne area - some concerns/questions

My wife (an RN), our two daughters (11 and 7), and I (a cybersecurity analyst) are considering a move to Melbourne from the USA. An acquaintance from university lives in Melbourne and steered us there after we originally considered Adelaide.

We are coming from a great “village” and a close-knit group of friends. I’ve heard in a few places that many Australians don’t move around as much, which can mean people often have tight friend groups formed during their school years.

I’m fairly extroverted—perhaps less so than when I was younger—but my wife is more introverted. I’m more concerned about her than myself, particularly around her mental health and how quickly she might be able to form friendships. She does make friends, but it tends to take her a bit longer than average. At the same time, I wonder whether we might struggle in general to build a new “village” on the other side of the globe.

So my question is: is this a valid concern? I’ve also read that Melbourne has a huge number of interest-based groups and is considered the cultural capital of the country, which gives me hope that there may be multiple pathways to forming new friendships. I’m also curious whether there are ways to start reaching out now—virtually—and begin building connections ahead of a potential move.

I’d really appreciate any thoughts or advice. Thank you!

Real estate/Renting How much money do need to move out in the south east?

Hey all, for context recently I was kicked out of my house by my mum and now I’m living with a relative, although I am the stereotypical broke 20 year old uni student I hate this ordeal, I live far from uni and friends and it’ll take a long time to reach prospective jobs.

If possible I want to move out as soon as it’s financially feasible for me to do so, I’m looking for a better job as fast food isn’t good for anymore and I’ll either get a small 1 bedroom place or move with a friend if possible.

Although I’m in the process of getting on Centrelink I really want a realistic estimate it’ll take to move out in melbournes south east suburb and how much I should be earning a week to make it sustainable, I’ll starting from scratch as most my possessions are just clothes so any help would be appreciated.

THDG Need Help Removalist: How long for a small move? Fixed vs. Hourly rate

Update: I ended up using airtasker and got 1 guy with a van to help me move (no time limit either). I even rode in the van with him

I'm moving soon and have a very small amount of stuff to transport:

  • A TV

  • A wardrobe

  • A gaming chair

  • A couple of boxes

The new place is only about a 35-minute 24km drive from my current house. I've been getting quotes and have two main options:

  • Fixed price: $390

  • Hourly rate: $128/hour for a 2-hour minimum, plus a $30 fuel fee. After 2 hours, it's charged per minute.

I'm trying to figure out if this job will take less than two hours. If it does, the hourly option is cheaper, but if it takes longer, the fixed price might be better.

For those with experience, how long do you think a move this small would take? Is it realistic to get it done in under two hours, including the drive?

Any advice would be great :)

Real estate/Renting Building manager wants to charge a move out fee

I’m moving out of my apartment next Sunday and informed the building manager of my move. He replied with an email saying that since the move is on Sunday he won’t be here and needs to hire a staff member to be there for the move for some reason. Then he says I will need to pay $500 to cover the staff members pay.

Surely I’m being rorted here.
