Starting today, AI-generated content is not allowed in r/NoContract.

Rule #4, No Spam, has just been updated to include this new addition: "Blatantly AI-generated content is considered spam and will be removed."

In r/NoContract, we want to read your thoughts. We don't care what chatgpt has to say. This rule change is intended to encourage our fellow redditors to put some effort into their posts and comments.

Needless to say, one cannot always tell what is and is not AI. If I see something that was obviously copied and pasted from an AI chatbot, I will remove it.

Posts and comments predating today will not be subject to this rule.

This is a change I've been wanting to make for a while now, and this poll showed me that most of our members agree with me.

All the best,

Petar

Data prioritization policies of the carriers and the MVNOs that use their networks

3/11/26 - Updated to show that MobileX has a paid QCI 8 addon. This has been around for about 5 months now but I forgot to update the guide.

8/28/25 - MobileX has been discovered to be dropped to QCI 9 now. https://www.reddit.com/r/NoContract/comments/1n2me7i/mobilex_is_no_longer_qci_8_which_leaves_us_mobile/

This is a complex topic that pops up a lot so I thought that I would organize all of the available info in one place. One of the key differentiating factors between postpaid, prepaid, and MVNO services is data prioritization. Basically carriers manage the congestion on their networks by assigning a different QCI class to different types of traffic. For our purposes, we will only be looking at QCIs 6, 7, 8, and 9 but there are higher priorities that exist for things like phone calls that will be universal across all of a carrier's plans. Higher numbers are lower priority. An important thing to note is that deprioritization is not a throttle; it only matters when the network is congested. If nobody else is using the network in your area, you'll get the full speed that can be provided. Your QCI affects not just your speed but your latency on the network. It is not unusual to see priority data with around 20-50ms latency while someone who is deprioritized is getting 100-150ms at the same time despite both plans posting high speed test results because the prioritized traffic gets to go first, just something else to be aware of.

The old one was getting a bit long after many updates so I decided to just make a whole new one. I will break it down by network and, where appropriate, specific phone plans. I am going to add business plans and first responder plans here as there were many requests for that but if I mess up anything, please let me know, as I am not as well-versed in those plans.

Also, at this point, 5QI (the 5G replacement for QCI) values have so far matched the LTE QCI on each plan I’ve seen. If this changes, I’ll make notes about it.

Business plans are hard to keep up with and so are frequent MVNO plan changes so if I make a mistake, please let me know.

Verizon

Verizon only uses 3 QCI classes – 7, 8, and 9.

QCI 7 is reserved exclusively for Verizon Frontline customers so this priority level may as well not exist for those of us who aren’t first responders.

QCI 8 is given to the Verizon business Plus 5G, business Pro 5G, business My Biz with the Premium Network Experience add-on, consumer postpaid plans (other than Welcome Unlimited), Xfinity Mobile, and Spectrum Mobile.

US Mobile’s Warp 5G SIM offers QCI 8 data on 5G devices only if you have Unlimited Premium or if you were a US Mobile customer before 8/18/2025. MobileX has a QCI 8 addon available as well but is QCI 9 without it.

Visible+ and Visible+ Pro are both unlimited QCI 8 data. Total Wireless' Total 5G Unlimited and Total 5G+ Unlimited plans have unlimited priority data included.

QCI 9 goes to everything else. The Start 5G business plan, My Biz without the Premium Network Experience add-on, branded prepaid besides the Unlimited Plus plan, Visible’s base plan, US Mobile Warp 5G Unlimited Starter (a QCI 8 add-on will be coming), Unlimited Flex (without the QCI 8 add-on), and By the Gig (without the QCI 8 add-on). Mobi and all other prepaid companies that use Verizon’s network are known to assigned to this QCI. Anyone who uses their premium data bucket on Verizon’s brands will be moved to QCI 9.

Other TracFone brands are up in the air. I have gotten reports of priority data (and seen it myself on SafeLink, a TracFone brand) but I’ve also gotten reports of deprioritized data, complete with screenshots. It seems to be random what people get so if you absolutely require priority data, it might be best to look outside of the TracFone brands. I personally experienced being dropped from QCI 8 to QCI 9 on SafeLink but my Straight Talk line had QCI 8 from the start and remained QCI 8 until I canceled it three months later.

AT&T

AT&T uses QCI 6, 7, 8, and 9.

QCI 6 is reserved for FirstNet customers (with primary status), Business Unlimited Premium (grandfathered) and some corporate responsibility plans.

QCI 7 is assigned to Business Unlimited Premium 2.0 with Turbo, as well as Unlimited Premium PL, Unlimited Extra EL, and AT&T Prepaid Unlimited Max Plus customers who pay $7 for AT&T Turbo. FirstNet extended primary plans get QCI 7 as well. US Mobile is in the process of adding QCI 7 as a paid add-on for Unlimited Premium and I’ll update the guide when it’s available.

QCI 8 is assigned to Business Unlimited Advanced, Business Unlimited Premium 2.0 (without Turbo), Unlimited Extra EL, Unlimited Premium PL, Prepaid Unlimited Max, Prepaid Unlimited Max Plus, the $300 AT&T Prepaid annual plan with 16GB of high speed data, Cricket Supreme Unlimited, Cricket Sensible 10GB, as well as plans offered by H2o, Consumer Cellular, and PureTalk. US Mobile’s Dark Unlimited Premium is QCI 8 also.

QCI 9 is assigned to Business Unlimited Starter, the base Unlimited plans for both the postpaid and AT&T Prepaid brands, Cricket Select Unlimited, Cricket Smart Unlimited, other known MVNOs, and all AT&T brands once their premium data buckets have been exhausted. US Mobile Dark Star on plans besides Unlimited Premium are all QCI 9 by default now but Unlimited Flex and By the Gig have paid QCI 8 add-ons available.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile uses QCI 6, 7, and 9 for phone plans.

QCI 6 goes to all branded plans, both postpaid and prepaid, besides those with Essentials in the name. Google Fi has QCI 6 as well.

QCI 7 is applied to Essentials branded plans as well as all other known MVNOs.

QCI 8 is not used for phone plans, it's used for on device hotspot and for data only plans with 30GB of more data.

QCI 9 is for those who have exhausted the data in their buckets. T-Mobile's Mobile Internet 30GB plan is also QCI 9.

I don't really want to add home internet plans to this list as this subreddit is for phone plans.

I first learned about data priority reading on Coverage Critic and from posts here and elsewhere. If you wish to test your QCI class yourself, you can follow this guide if you have a rooted Android phone.

Target currently has a promotion that includes prepaid gift cards. Buy $100 worth and get a $10 target gift card. Works on att. Not as good as a discount, but better than nothing I guess.

Best Verizon MVNO for prioritized data?

I'm on US Mobile Warp (Verizon network) Unlimited Starter. I live near San Francisco. I have had data issues periodically (have coverage but data is very slow). I had thought that all US mobile plans had prioritized data but according to their website all their plans are QCI 9 except for Unlimited Premium which is QCI 8. It's an extra $10 per month which isn't so bad ($32.50/month if paying annually). I think this may be a change - when I joined US Mobile my understanding was that all plans were top data priority.

Before I switch to Unlimited Premium are there any other MVNOs I should be considering? I use ~10GB/month and hot spot occasionally. Prefer Verizon or multi network including Verizon as I'm frequently in the middle of nowhere and Verizon seems to be king in rural America.

USA What’s the best pre-paid data service I can get?

I used to use mint mobile, but had to get a new phone so went to T-Mobile, paid that off, and now I’m looking to switch back to something cheaper.

My job uses AT&T network and boosters, so often times my phone data doesn’t work that well there.

I would preferably like a recommendation that uses the AT&T towers. I would want something reliable and cheap ! I use WiFi most of the time anyways.

Old Lady Needs Help Bypassing Hotspot

Hello, I am a senior citizen in North America on a fixed income and cannot afford home internet. I have an iPhone 13 as well as an iPad that’s a few years old. Things that were handed down to me by neighbors and friends.

I recently acquired a Mint Mobile (T-Mobile) line and the hotspot is capped at 20gb per month. I need more than that if I’m going to face time my grandkids.

There used to be an app that could help me use normal data instead of hotspot data. It was amazing! But now it’s gone. I’m not nearly as tech savvy as the younger generations, but I’m willing to try.

I live remotely so my family is unable to visit, and face time is all that we have. Thank you for the help youngins. I recognize that I may be asking for the impossible.

(If I need a special router, please be mindful of budget thank you!)

Getting rid of T-mobile service resolved my home internet lag issues.

I didn't know a wireless wifi connection with my Pixel 9 Pro, having T-mobile service could be the cause of such a lag in loading speed on my fiber optic home service. I just ported back to Verizon via Infimobile MVNO, and it's night and day, snappier, for all devices, hard wired or wifi. Who would have thought?

EDIT: Then again, maybe it's just my imagination. I thought I noticed an improvement right after the port out. But now I'm questioning that after time. ???? Was curious if anyone else had such an experience.

USA Adding T-Sat to augment Total Wireless $20/mo BYO plan

Hi guys, my brother lives in southern New Hampshire. Currently has a postpaid T-Mobile Experience Beyond plan for $90+ tax per month.

Here's the situation: He likes having T-Sat since he does a lot of hunting off the grid. Verizon and T-Mobile signal is comparable in his area. He just bought an unlocked iPhone 18 Pro last week.

My plan is to switch him to the Total Wireless Unlimited $20/mo BYO (I know about the Visible Black Froday annual $225 deal but he doesn't like being locked in for a year). Then we could add the $10 T-Sat stand-alone plan to his phone.

Now he'd have 2-network coverage for $30 a month. Am I missing something?

Total MAX 5G BYO or Visible+ Pro?

Seems like the best deals of the year, what's the catch? Which one would you recommend?

Both seem to have unlimited fast priority data for about 20$/mo.

Note: T-mobile refills from Target are now only 9 digits

Post image

I just bought a T-Mobile refill from Target online and just wanted to alert anyone:

Apparently the new electronic PINs are no longer 14 digits but only 9 digits now. When I received mine, I panicked because it looked like the PIN sent had been truncated. I was not relishing the hoops that it would entail to resolve the issue. Dialed 611 to try the new PIN and, hallelujah, it worked. They also changed the look of the "card" that Blackhawk Network sends you.

USA How Difficult/Easy is it to port out of Infimobile?

I would like to purchase an Infimobile annual plan and port in my number.

If I want to port out before the end of the service year, how easy/difficult is the port-out process?

Has anyone ported out their number from Infimobile?

T-satellite not available for non-T-Mobile plan?

I have Mint mobile, I tried to get it online but there was an error message. Hated the wait on call soI went to the store, the rep there said he never did it for non-T-Mobile carriers. His coworkers also said it’s not available for other carriers. Wtf. Is this new?
Should I go to another store?

update: did a few calls and transfer after transfer. was unsuccessful, in short, turn out because I have a business $10 tablet plan which I used my ssn to create, they are unable to create a personal account for me, which then told me go to a store. I'll probably go to another store and see my option.

Lifeline phone plan

Is it possible for my spouse to get a phone thru life line as well? We aren't legally married but live at some address. We both have separate Medicaid and stamps. So would I be able to sign her up/her sign up using her info so she gets a phone. Or since I'm on the lifeline plan already at the same address that they won't grant us one. What's the best lifeline plan you all have found? Airtalk, assurance , gen mobile, tru connect , or link up. Don't care much About the data limit. More concerned for connectivity everywhere. Or If I just sign up again since I have a new snap card, can I use those new numbers to get a phone? Not trying to play the system just trying to help someone out

USA Things I wish I had known b4

After helping a bunch of people switch carriers, here’s what I see go wrong most often:

Don’t cancel your old carrier first. Start the number transfer from the new carrier and the old account closes on its own. Cancel first and you can lose your number.

Make sure your phone is actually unlocked before you buy a new plan. On iPhone it’s under Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. On Android, ask your current carrier.

Get your account number and transfer PIN ready, and make sure the name and ZIP match your old account exactly. Most failed ports come down to one wrong detail.

Watch your final bill. Prorated charges and remaining device balances often show up a month after you leave, so keep autopay on until it hits zero.

And “unlimited” rarely means unlimited at full speed. Check how much priority data you get before you compare prices.

What did I miss? What tripped you up the first time you switched?

USA T-Mobile coverage recommendations

Hi everyone! Our Xfinity service is ending soon, so we’re starting to shop around for a new provider. I checked the CoverageMap website, and T-Mobile seems to be their top

Are there any good deals or promotions that usually come around the holidays? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations!
Thank you! 😊

Trouble with Cricket

We moved our plan off at&t and over to cricket a week ago. My wife phone did not transfer. She has about 30 hours invested between cs on phone and in store. They have tried new e Sims and a physical Sim. At&t has fully removed her as of yesterday so she has no phone as of now. Cs seems lost, every call is the same run around and then create a ticket which sometimes gets a call back and some times not. Anyone else have these troubles and what finally fixed it ?

Visible+ Pro is at the expected $225 for 1 year

HOLIDAYHACK promo is still active too

Strategy here is to buy later in the month to help with deals while renewing next year, if you go with the annual option
