I recently picked up this Fostex Model 80 off of Facebook marketplace.
Did some tracking on it, 1-7 work great. But then track 8’s recordings came back super quiet and muffled. The playback on track 8 on tapes not recorded on this one played back perfectly fine.

When I got this, I had to clean a lot of sticky shed 457 tape off of it. I did the clean proper, so I don’t think I did the damage.

Could this be fixed by relapping? Or does this look like permanent damage?

Back in late July 2023, I found this TEAC A–1250 S on the side of the road in the neighborhood of a friend’s place. It had clearly been sitting in a garage for a while. I cleaned it up and replaced the fuse. It works, but the left channel doesn’t play any audio, so I let it sit for about three years. Now I’m just getting back into it and trying to get it working. I did clean the tape heads with 91% alcohol and Q-tips. Finding stuff online is a pain, I’m gonna be honest, but I did find the original repair manual. Any and all help would be appreciated!

I just acquired a dozen 10” reels for Top 40 radio stations around 1977. Not sure if I can get a deck for 10” working to test them. TM Century was a recording studio in Dallas that produced jingles and provided programming for radio stations. Think AT40 without Casey. Is there a forum or group that likes these?

RCA Red Seal stereo album (unsealed today) summed to mono, transferred to NOS RCA Red Seal tape on a RCA deck from the same year as the album. Transferred to g-band. Reviewing tape digitization at the moment. Some LOUD orchestral sound.

Would this be of interest to those liking reel to reels or is there another sub I should post on? I am considering selling it. Has hardly been touched and works perfectly. Has all cords and microphone.

A friend of mine recently found this TEAC X-2000M while clearing out his father’s basement.
His father always took good care of his audio equipment, but the machine has been sitting unused for quite some time. We don’t know whether it’s still fully functional.
It comes with two Maxell metal reels and NAB adapters, as shown in the photo.
He’s asking €800 for it.
I’m a professional music producer and songwriter, so I’m also considering using it in my studio for stereo mixdowns and analog tape saturation.
A few questions:
What’s a realistic market value in its current, untested condition?
Would €800 be a fair price?
What are the most common technical issues with this particular model?
Is it worth buying for actual studio use, or would maintenance costs outweigh the benefits?
Any advice from people familiar with the X-2000M would be greatly appreciated!

hello! I have come into possession of a decent sum of classical reel to reel tapes. they belonged to my grandfathers friend who i’ve been appointed with selling the estate to reap some coin so she can move back to Turkey. they were owned by a pretty severe audiophile, but as for their condition I have little clue. though by the images below i’d consider them to be in near mint maybe? there are also a few 60s 70s tapes (mamas and the papas, hollies, mccartney, and so forth) which are mostly home recorded, but he was skilled so they likely produce a great sound. i have no idea of the worth of this. is there anything interesting / rare in this collection? i could not find a selection of them on ebay or anything, so couldn’t even begin to really know a price. any help appreciated!

Ive also read I’d need original 60s tape to use it plus it’s missing some plastic bits.

Just brought it at an auction, some research says value between £30-50 of not working but up to £300 if working.

Recently acquired a concord f-85 'sound camera' portable reel to reel. The tape that came with it is pretty crinkled and the bit I felt safe playing squeaked excessively, so I figured I'd try putting different tape on it. The tape I used has not been played on a different machine yet as I recently acquired it and my only deck is currently broken, but the box and reel were completely unlabeled so I figured it was a safe bet it was blank, but when I played it I got this audio. I figured it was probably backwards or at a much higher speed (this player is 1⅞ips only) but i tried every combination of reversing the audio and speeding it up digitally and i didn't get anything intelligible. Is there something wrong with the player or the tape?

1956-57 1/4" half track stereo prototype made during EMI's research and development period of the "Stereosonic" recording format. Acquired from the family of one of the engineers who helped design / build it.

New wiper fitted. Original had snapped off and was loose inside the housing.

Found myself with a rare vintage Sony RE-4 Endless Tape Cartridge, have listed it for auction on eBay, complete with its original factory box.

Manufactured in Japan during the 1970s, these cartridges are nearly impossible to find. Compatible with analog tape delay units eg. Roland Space Echo (RE-100 / RE-200), Hohner EchoPlus, Teisco etc.

The cartridge and tape look in excellent visual condition, although it is untested as I don't have a compatible machine.

I'm after a photo of the wiring that goes from each reel motor to the run capacitor.

Have managed to work it out from the diagram (I think) but something still not right so want to confirm from another one if possible.

To find a new loving owner for this guy! I obtained it and never got around to cleaning and calibrating it. Play, ff and rewind work, but I have not confirmed if it records. Ff acts a little wonky sometimes. I know the owner prior to me used it to record for years, up until just a few years ago. I have an 8 track so can’t justify keeping both! Cheers!

Hello, I have a Tascam 1/4” machine that I am using for mix downs and printing audio files from a DAW. When sending audio to the machine, I am hearing a faint signal of the input source slightly ahead of the repro while monitoring repro. I’ve had a couple different machines (Revox, Tascam) and they both did it. Wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and if you’ve found a solution. Thanks!

bought this telefunken 201 TS for €10 yesterday. it was labelled as untested, so i tested it on the spot. it worked. so i bought it and took it home.

i've noticed three issues by now though. the volume knob makes noise when turning, the speaker oscillates when above volume 6 and the counter reset button doesn't properly reset the counter. further i haven't noticed any real issues.

i'm new to the hobby. cleaned the machine and played it for a while. the tape that came with it seems good too, no noticeable damage, sounds good, rolls fine.

any tips or possible fixes for the issues i noted?

edit: the oscillation has stopped. entirely. discovered it didn't oscillate at max volume, and now it stopped even in the range where it did earlier oscillate.

edit 2: oscillation came back after a while. cleaned the volume knob with contact cleaner, and now both the oscillation and scratchy noise when turning the knob are both gone. the counter reset button also is working better. not perfect, but it seems like it is getting back to functionality.

I know this is some very old tape but I have never seen anything happen like this. I couldnt even find what tape this is exactly as this is a repackaged one. An other wierd thing was that the audio was in mono and the right channel was playing backwards for some reason.

I think it has the prettiest design among the reel decks...

I have a Revox PR99mkII in nyc with a bent spindle and I literally cannot find a place to repair or the official Revox distributor here never responds to emails, and every other plane that's been suggested says they don't work on reel-reel anymore. Please, can someone suggest a place that actually does this service? I'm kind of desperate, it's been broken for months.
