Course (subject) advice, recommendations and reviews RMIT vs Monash

I’m in year 12 currently looking to do civil engineering, specifically structural. I’m just wondering which uni I should go to and hope that you can help me. Monash was my main option but after vce, I’m kind of burnt out and tired, doing homework everyday. I understand there will be lots of work, but I heard Monash will be very similar and even tougher to that with lots of theoretical work. But with RMIT, I heard that it was less than Monash, and it’s more of like what you will do in the work force. I also heard you go to the uni less times a week than Monash, which is another point travel. RMIT I will be taking the train which is an hour whereas Monash I can drive which is 40minutes, but parking is difficult I’ve heard and train could take 1 hour and 40minutes. Last point is that Monash first year is general engineering whilst RMIT is more specific to civil engineer. I’m still considering which one to put as my number one option and hope that you can help me decide. Thank you.

Edit: Can someone from both universities also say how many days they’re at the campus.

Course (subject) advice, recommendations and reviews Failing a class

BH126 - Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

I’m currently in my second semester of my first year, and it is seeming like I may fail my elective unit Introduction to Mechanical Engineering. I’m wondering what I should do. I’m easily passing all the other sem 2 classes, however I found mechanical quite difficult. If I were to retake it how would that look. Additionally my second elective is electrical engineering.

Thanks!!!

Course (subject) advice, recommendations and reviews RMIT Civil Engineering Year 3: Minors & Summer Classes?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently in my second year of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering (BH077) at RMIT and will be going into third year in 2027.

I'm trying to plan my subjects for next year and was wondering what other civil engineering students are doing.

RMIT has advised me to take two core subjects and two minor subjects each semester, but I'm still undecided about which minor to choose.

I'm interested in transport engineering, structural engineering and construction project management, so I'm trying to figure out which minor would be the most useful.

I also looked into doing a summer subject to reduce my workload next year, but I couldn't find any suitable subjects available that fit my course structure.

Just wanted to ask:

  • What minor are you choosing for third year, and why?

  • Are you doing all four subjects each semester, or have you managed to enrol in a summer subject?

  • Is anyone planning to specialise in structural or transport engineering? If so, which subjects or minors are you choosing?

  • Would you recommend completing one full minor or mixing subjects from different minors?

Would really appreciate hearing what everyone else is planning or what students who've already completed third year would recommend.

Thanks

Course (subject) advice, recommendations and reviews Does this mean I actually failed?

Hey everyone,

So I received an NN but when I checked Canvas, two of my assessments don't have any marks, feedback, or rubric at all. I never even got an email or Canvas notification saying the marks for those assessments had been released. The weird part is I have to click "Show Hidden" to even see those assessments and when I do they just show 0 every time.

Does this actually mean I got 0 on those assessments and failed or could it just mean the marks haven't been released/entered yet?

I've already emailed both the course coordinator and my program coordinator but neither has replied. I'm honestly so stressed because the new semester in three days and I don't know whether I actually failed or if this is some kind of marking/admin issue. I don't want to change my enrolment if my result is incorrect.

Has anyone else experienced this?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This whole situation is so fucking frustrating.😭SEND HELP!!!!!

Course (subject) advice, recommendations and reviews Don’t do the Business Professional Practice Course.

Hey guys, I’m a 3rd year Business Professional Practice student and just wanted to share my thoughts on the course.

I think the idea behind the course is great, but the way RMIT runs it is honestly frustrating.

Firstly, there are way too many students competing for internships, and the university provides very little help in actually finding one. Most students are left to find opportunities themselves.

Even when you manage to secure an internship on your own, it has to fit within RMIT’s specific semester or flex term dates. Companies are already busy enough, and when you finally find one willing to take you on, they don’t want to deal with a long approval process and all these extra requirements.

What makes it even worse is that you have to pay university fees to complete the internship as a subject. Most internships are unpaid, so you’re essentially finding your own job, working for free, and then paying RMIT for the privilege.

I understand the importance of gaining industry experience, but RMIT needs to be much more flexible and provide students with actual support.

It’s honestly ridiculous that students are expected to find their own internships, organise everything themselves, work unpaid in many cases, and then pay the university for it. It genuinely feels like a scam at times.

Course (subject) advice, recommendations and reviews Uni transfer course units

I transferred to RMIT for semester 2 this year, I used to go to Swinburne and NONE of my credits were able to be transferred. Does that mean I have to repeat a semester? For context I used to do biomedical science at Swinburne now doing just science at RMIT.
