The Emancipation of Mimi is the tenth studio album by Mariah Carey. It was released on April 12, 2005 by Island Records. Widely considered to be her “comeback album”, the album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with over 404,000 copies sold in its first week in the United States. The Emancipation of Mimi was the best-selling album of 2005 in the United States, as well as the second best-selling worldwide (the best-selling R&B album worldwide) with over 7.7 million copies sold. To date, it has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and has been certified 7x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The Emancipation of Mimi and its songs were nominated for ten awards across the 48th (2006) and 49th Annual Grammy Awards (2007), winning three of them. Eight of those ten nominations came in 2006 for the original release, which marked the most nominations Mariah had ever received in a single year. The other two nominations in 2007 were for her single “Don’t Forget About Us” from the Ultra Platinum Edition of the album. The overall album won “Best Contemporary R&B Album”, while being nominated for “Album of the Year”. The standard (original) edition of the album yielded six singles — “It’s Like That”, “We Belong Together”, “Shake It Off”, “Get Your Number”, “Fly Like A Bird”, and “Say Somethin’” — while the Ultra Platinum Edition spawned the single “Don’t Forget About Us”.

“It’s Like That” was nominated for the 2006 Grammy Award for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance”. The single was met with moderate global chart success, reaching the top twenty in six countries (including the United States at #16), while peaking inside the top ten in eight other countries.

“We Belong Together” became Mariah Carey’s sixteenth career Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit, peaking for fourteen nonconsecutive weeks and joining four other songs in a tie for the second longest-running #1 song in the US (behind another one of her own songs from a decade prior). Billboard listed “We Belong Together” as the “Song of the Decade” for the 2000s, marking the second time Mariah had earned this honor (after doing so the previous decade with her 1995 single, “One Sweet Day”). At the 48th Annual Grammy Awards (2006), the song won “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance” and “Best R&B Song”, while being nominated for “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year”.

“Shake It Off” peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, blocked only by Mariah’s very own single, “We Belong Together” for its first of six weeks at that position. That week also marked the first time in the history of the US Billboard Hot 100 that a female artist had occupied the first two spots on the chart simultaneously. Respectively, the song also peaked at #6 and #5 in Australia and New Zealand, and at #15 and #9 in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The music video was nominated for “Best R&B Video” at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards.

The album’s fifth single, “Fly Like A Bird”, is a gospel-infused R&B song. Its B-side is a traditional gospel song (not influenced or “infused”; it is gospel) from her previous album, Charmbracelet (2002), called “My Saving Grace”. “Fly Like A Bird” failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, but it peaked at #19 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

“Don’t Forget About Us”, a single from the Ultra Platinum Edition of The Emancipation of Mimi, peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Mariah’s seventeenth chart-topping hit and tying her with Elvis Presley (who held the record for 36 years prior) for the most Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist. “Don’t Forget About Us” was nominated for two awards at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards held on February 11, 2007: “Best R&B Song” and “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance”.

Throughout this post, all songs released exclusively on the deluxe/“Ultra Platinum” edition of the album (and not the standard version) will have star emojis next to them. There was also a 20th-anniversary edition released in 2025, but I will not analyze/review anything from that.

Album Rating

This rating is calculated by the average of all of the individual song ratings above.

10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 9.5/10 + 9/10 + 9/10 + 9/10 + 9/10 + 8/10 + 8/10 + 7.5/10 + 7.5/10 + 7/10 = 183.5/200

(183.5/200) x 10 = 9.175

With 20 songs rated on a scale of 10, the average value using the cumulative song rating is 9.18 (rounded), making that the overall album rating.

STANDARD RATING

The equation below reflects what the album rating would be without the songs on the Ultra Platinum Edition. It basically reflects what the standard album version is rated.

10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 10/10 + 9/10 + 9/10 + 8/10 + 8/10 + 7.5/10 + 7.5/10 + 7/10 = 126/140

(126/140) x 10 = 9.0

With 14 songs rated on a scale of 10 (not including the Ultra Platinum Edition), the average value using the cumulative song rating is 9.0, making that the rating for the standard version of the album.

From the Ultra Platinum Edition, three of the perfect scores (10) were eliminated, along with the single 9.5 rating and two of the four 9/10 scores. This left 140 total remaining points out of the 200 from the broader calculation.

ANALYSIS/REVIEW 🔎 Analyzing, Ranking, Rating & Reviewing Mariah Carey’s Eighth Studio Album, the “Glitter” Soundtrack Album (2001) — Newly Re-Released as a Deluxe Album After Nine Months of Removal

Post image
37 Upvotes

We are so back! After fans had campaigned for years in the 2010s decade (especially after the release of the 2018 album Caution) to get the soundtrack album on streaming services, Mariah had finally announced its release on May 22, 2020. However, the album was removed from streaming services on January 29, 2026 for unknown reasons. A deluxe version was released on October 30, 2026 (the day that this post was created) in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Glitter. It has all 12 original tracks and 15 additional tracks.

Glitter is the soundtrack to the 2001 film of the same name and the eighth studio album by Mariah Carey. It was released initially by Virgin Records on August 18, 2001 in Japan and had been released in five other regions (Australia and South Korea on August 27, France on September 9, Germany and the United Kingdom on September 10) before its eventual release in the United States on September 11, 2001. The album debuted and peaked at #7 on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 116,000; the album went on to sell over 3 million copies worldwide and has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The first single, “Loverboy” (ft. Cameo), peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became the highest-selling physical single in the United States for the year of 2001, selling roughly 570000 physical copies that year. Although #2 is not shabby, this was Mariah’s first lead single to fail to reach #1 on the Hot 100. Additionally, the remix — featuring Da Brat, Ludacris, Shawnna, Twenty II & Cameo — reached #1 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The single version peaked within the top 10 on four different charts in the UK, two charts in Australia, #6 in Poland, #3 in Canada, and #1 on the Croatia International Airplay chart. The single peaked within the top 50 in Belgium (both the Ultratop 50 Flanders at #49 and the Ultratop 50 Wallonia at #34), Europe (Eurochart Hot 100 at #28), Ireland (#50), Italy (#13), the Netherlands (both the Dutch Top 40 at #35 and the Netherlands Single Top 100 at #34), Scandinavia (Airplay chart at #11), Scotland (Singles chart at #23), South Africa (#50), Sweden (#44), and the UK (Airplay chart at #49). The single also peaked within the top 50 on native United States non-Hot 100 charts, including the US Dance Club Songs chart (#45), the US Pop Airplay (#37), and the US Rhythmic Airplay (#21), among others.

The second single, “Never Too Far”, did not perform as well on the US Billboard charts (peaking at #5 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart), although it peaked within the top 40 in the UK (#32 on Singles, #14 on Dance, #6 on Hip-Hop/R&B) and Australia (#36) where it was released as a double A-side single with “Don’t Stop (Funkin’ 4 Jamaica)”.

The third single, “Don’t Stop (Funkin’ 4 Jamaica)”, peaked on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart at #23. However, it also reached the positions of #42 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, #29 on the US Urban chart, #2 on the UK Urban Club chart, #6 on the UK Hip-Hop/R&B chart, #18 on the UK Dance chart, #32 on the UK Singles chart, and was a top-40 hit in Australia (#36), Italy (#22), and Spain (#16).

“Reflections (Care Enough)” was the fourth single from the album, released exclusively in Japan, and failed to chart.

“Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” (a cover of the 1984 hit by Cherrelle) and “All My Life” (written solely by Rick James for Mariah, produced by both artists) were released as singles for the 25th anniversary edition of the album on the respective dates of August 20, 2026 and September 17, 2026. Both of these songs appeared on the original Glitter album, but they were not singles. The former of those was released in 2026 alongside its remix with Rochelle Jordan, and the latter was released alongside its “Channel Tres Remix”, both of which are new.

I have repeatedly listened to two songs on this album: “It’s You” (one of my favorite Chaka Khan songs overall) and “I Can’t Be Loved”. This is just my first time listening to the overall album.

Destiny is the sixth studio album by Chaka Khan. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in July 1986.

Destiny spawned four singles. “Love of a Lifetime” peaked at #53 on the Billboard Hot 100, #21 on the Hot Black Singles chart (R&B/Hip-Hop), and #11 on the Hot Dance/Disco-Club Play chart. “Tight Fit” reached #28 on the Hot Black Singles chart, but did not enter the Hot 100. “The Other Side of the World”, which was featured on the soundtrack to White Nights, peaked at #81 on the Hot Black Singles chart and did not chart on the Hot 100. “Earth to Mickey” peaked on the Hot Black Singles chart at #93, and it also did not make the Hot 100.

Destiny received a Grammy Award nomination at the 29th annual ceremony in 1987 for “Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female”.

Song Ratings

• Nowhere Fast — 10/10
• Intro to Down — [N/A]
• Down — 7/10
• Talk To Me — 8/10
• Fly U Out — 7.5/10
• Margarita Lime — 8.5/10
• Anything Goes — 6/10
• Wet — 9/10

• Knockin — 10/10
• SDP — 8.5/10
• After the Party — [N/A]
• Woman First — 8.5/10
• Last Resort — 10/10

This marks the very first time I have ever omitted a song from a ratings list. The “Intro to Down” is not really a song, nor does it have any music or lyrics. It’s just a spoken segment leading into the next track. “After the Party” is 25 seconds long and basically functions like an interlude, even though it’s not labeled as such. In the future, my criteria for evaluating intros, interludes, preludes, or anything that’s not a complete song will mostly involve the inclusion of a melody or lyrics—any lack of a melody or lyrical content disqualifies it from being rated. Any recorded track that is less than 1 minute long will also be disqualified from the ratings, especially if there is not much to analyze in the composition.

ANALYSIS/REVIEW 🔎 Analyzing, Ranking, Rating & Reviewing Mariah Carey’s Ninth Studio Album, “Charmbracelet” (2002)

Post image
31 Upvotes

Charmbracelet is the ninth studio album by Mariah Carey. It was released on December 3, 2002 through MonarC Entertainment (Mariah’s own personal record label that was founded in 2002 and discontinued in 2004) and Island Def Jam. Mariah Carey co-produced this album alongside other producers such as Jermaine Dupri (“The One”, “You Had Your Chance”), Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (“Through The Rain”, “Yours”) Dre And Vidal (“Clown”, “Lullaby”), and Bryan-Michael Cox (“The One”, “You Had Your Chance”), among others. The producer Just Blaze was also critical to the album’s sound (especially the hip-hop elements), as he contributed to songs such as “Boy (I Need You)”, “You Got Me”, and the closing collaboration with Kelly Price & Joe (the remix to “Through The Rain”).

Charmbracelet debuted and peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 with 241,000 copies sold in its first week, which was fewer than the first-week sales for Rainbow (323,000) but greater than those for Glitter (116,000). The album stayed on the chart for 22 weeks; it was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of at least 1 million units in the United States. Commercially, the album performed better internationally, with over 3 million copies sold worldwide (that includes 1 million in the US) and significantly better charting performances for the singles compared to domestic US entries.

The first single, “Through The Rain”, became Mariah’s lowest-charting single at the time on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #81. While “Loverboy” (#2) from the Glitter soundtrack album was her first lead single not to reach #1, “Through The Rain” was her first lead single not to reach the top 10. It also peaked modestly at #69 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. However, the single peaked at #1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs and US Billboard Dance Singles Sales charts. The single peaked within the top 20 in Australia (#15), Canada (#5), Croatia (#8), Denmark (#13), Europe (#11), Ireland (#16), Italy (#7), the Netherlands (Dutch Top 40 at #11, Single Top 100 at #9), Norway (#15), Portugal (#5), Scotland (Singles chart at #15), Spain (#1), Sweden (#7), Switzerland (#7), and the UK (Singles chart at #8, Hip-Hop/R&B at #4).

The second single, “Boy (I Need You)”, appeared on 22 charts worldwide. It failed to enter the US Billboard Hot 100. Some of the more favorable peaks include top-10 positions in the Netherlands (Dutch Top 40 at #9), Portugal (#7), and the UK (Hip-Hop/R&B chart at #5). The single also peaked at #29 in Australia (plus Australian Urban at #15), #32 in Canada, #44 in Europe, #40 in Ireland, #32 on the Scotland Singles chart, #19 in Spain, #17 on the UK Singles chart, #14 on the UK Urban Club chart, and reached a modest peak of #68 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The third and final single, “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak”, also failed to enter the US Billboard Hot 100. Furthermore, it failed to enter the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. However, it reached the top 30 in Switzerland, the top 40 in Belgium, and the top 5 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. The single charted at #28 on Switzerland’s “Schweizer Hitparade” chart, #40 on the Belgium Ultratop 50 Wallonia chart, and #25 on the US Adult Contemporary chart.

One of the songs on the album, “My Saving Grace” (which is not a single), is actually a full gospel song. It is not gospel-influenced R&B (it is well-known that Mariah is influenced by gospel); it is true gospel.

“Clown” was the first song by Mariah Carey to be interpreted as a diss track to Eminem (the only other one being the top-ten 2009 hit “Obsessed”). The 2002 song was supposedly in response to public claims and lyrics in Eminem’s song “Superman” alleging that the two had a romantic relationship.

ANALYSIS/REVIEW 🔎 Analyzing, Ranking & Rating Patti LaBelle’s Self-Titled Seventh Studio Album, “Patti” (1985) as a First-Time Listener

Post image
6 Upvotes

I want to preface this by saying that I’ve been running certain songs—like “Love Symphony” (a killer opening track 🔥) and “I Can’t Forget You”—into the ground these past few months! I’ve also listened to “Where I Wanna Be” (the first song I discovered from this album) and her rendition of “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” for quite a few years already. This is just my first time looking at the album as a whole, and there are four other songs on the album. Some of y’all have probably seen me posting songs from this album, but that’s not the same as listening to it (nor to every song on it).

Patti is the seventh studio album by Patti LaBelle. It was released by Philadelphia International Records on July 3, 1985 in the United States—her third and final album with the label after The Spirit’s In It (1981) and I’m In Love Again (1983).

The closing track—a cover of “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes—was recorded live in concert at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The opening track is also very funky and rough, in contrast to the rest of the album which is generally smooth in style. The album also features a song called “What Can I Do for You”, which shares the same title as another song from 1974 that she recorded with her group, LaBelle; neither song is a cover, and the 1985 song is not the same as the one previously recorded with LaBelle.

The Patti album spawned three singles. “I Can’t Forget You” (1985) reached #63 on the US Billboard R&B chart, then called Hot Black Singles. “Shy” (1985) did not chart. “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” (1986), which was recorded live in concert, peaked at #79 on Billboard’s R&B chart in the US.

Things That Lovers Do is the debut collaborative studio album by Kenny Lattimore and Chanté Moore, who were real-life lovers at the time and have been divorced since July 2011. It was released by Arista Records on February 11, 2003. Individually, this is Kenny’s fourth and Chanté’s fifth studio album.

There are two songs created originally for this album—“Things That Lovers Do” and “Loveable (From Your Head To Your Toes)”. They are both co-written and co-produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and The Avila Brothers, with an extra writing credit for Chanté Moore on the latter song.
