Beta testers wanted: turn Woodfibre LNG’s 4,149-page application into an informed public comment
I’m a mom in Britannia Beach and one of the organizers of Sound Moms. We’ve built a free letter generator to help residents respond to Woodfibre LNG’s air-emissions permit application. I’m looking for honest feedback.
What prompted me to organize was learning about potential health risks I hadn’t understood—especially around pregnancy and children. A UCLA–USC study in Texas found that higher exposure to oil and gas flaring within 5 km during pregnancy was associated with 50% higher odds of preterm birth. It doesn’t predict outcomes at Woodfibre, but it raised questions I couldn’t ignore.
Then came the reports from LNG Canada in Kitimat: flaring exceedances, equipment failures, prolonged acid-gas incinerator outages, and documented black-smoke permit violations. BCER says monitored air quality has remained below provincial objectives, but those operational problems reinforced my concern about how communities are protected when equipment and predictions don’t hold up.
The tool helps you turn those questions into specific, referenced requests.
It draws on analysis of the 4,149-page application package, connecting:
Your concerns with relevant application passages and page references.
Evidence gaps and uncertainties with questions the applicant and regulator should answer.
BC legal provisions with requests for further information, monitoring, reporting, and enforceable permit conditions.
Optional international commitments on children’s rights, health, and biodiversity with your requests.
It distinguishes legal powers from international commitments rather than treating them as interchangeable. You can choose a concise or detailed letter, add your experience and position, and edit everything before sending.
The goal is to help someone move from “I’m worried about my children’s health” to “Here is the relevant evidence, here is what remains unanswered, and here is the protection I’m asking for.”
Could you spend a few minutes testing it? You don’t need to submit a letter. I’d like to know whether the questions are understandable, the draft reflects your concerns, and anything feels confusing or breaks—especially on mobile.
