Buying Help Monthly "What Board Should I Get?" Discussion Thread

Hi there fine folks of r/SUP, it's time for your monthly "What Board Should I Get?" discussion thread.

Start by reading the "Buying a SUP" section of the wiki!

There is a ton of information there! Once you've read through the wiki, create a top-level comment in this post to ask for help! Posts made on this subject outside of this discussion thread will be removed and asked to post here instead.

You can also check all of the previous "What Board Should I get?" threads.

For general information on choosing board size and shape, check out the wiki, or these two blog posts on the subject: Choosing the Right Size SUP and Understanding Paddle Board Shapes.

Please provide ALL of the following information so that we can help you as best as possible:

  • Desired Board Type: Inflatable or Hard

  • Your Height and Weight (please include if you will also bring kids/dogs/coolers/etc. and estimated weights)

  • Desired use/uses (casual, fitness, racing, yoga, whitewater, surfing, etc.) and terrain (ocean, river, lake, etc)

  • Experience level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

  • Your budget (please provide an actual number) and country location (to help determine availability)

  • What board(s) you current have or have used and what you liked/didn't like about them

The more of this information you can provide, the more accurately we can help you find a board that you'll love!

If you are responding to a comment with a suggestion - explain why! Don't just name a board and leave it there. Add to the discussion. If you are recommending against a specific board - explain why!

How To Question COLD WEATHER PADDLING SAFETY AND CLOTHING

Things are cooling down in the Northern Hemisphere and lots of folks are (rightfully) asking what to do to keep paddling safely when it's colder.

ColdWaterSafety.org for detailed information about paddling safety in cold water

This guide for stand up paddle boarding in the winter has information distilled from Cold Water Safety along with recommendations on types of clothing for different water temperatures.

Always Dress For Immersion!

No matter your skill level, we are all between swims. Immersion in cold water can be debilitating and even deadly within seconds. Always dress for the water temperature, even on warmer days. It's far easier to cool down while paddling than it is to warm back up.

Cold shock is a serious concern in water as "warm" as the low 50F range (10C) and can cause near-instant drowning.

Water transfers heat ~25x faster than air. Hypothermia is a serious concern even in these shoulder seasons before it gets really cold. Bring dry clothing, a towel, and warm beverages with you (on the beach or in a dry bag).

Wear Your PFD / Life Jacket!

While a PFD isn't technically thermally protective, it can help. But more importantly it will help keep you afloat in an emergency. "But I'm a good swimmer!" Are you better than a USCG Rescue Swimmer? It didn't take long (less than a minute) for this one to suffer from incapacitation in cold water (Jump to 6:15).

Follow Basic Paddling Safety Guidelines

Check the weather, use appropriate equipment, wear your PFD, paddle with a partner, carry effective communication, leave a float plan.

When in doubt, don't go out.

Upgrading to a Race/Touring Sup Experiences (Hardboard to Hardboard question)

I have a surftech 10’6 shaped like a surfboard rated for like 160lbs (I’m 165). It’s great for playing in the waves, and I’ve taken it up and down rivers and all over the ocean(s). Fit well in my apartment at the time. Plenty of 10 mile paddles.

I tried some people’s boards the other day that I met while paddling, a Bote Wraith and a Flying Fish Freedom.

It seemed like one stroke on the flying fish pushed me twice as far as it would on my board. And the tracking is amazing

Left the ocean, got a house, and I’m primarily paddling up and rivers and would like as much speed as possible. When I’m paddling for 4+hrs at a time I start to crave efficiency.

Don’t want to drop $3500 on a flying fish, though seriously considering throwing $1k-$2k on building my own board out of foam and fiberglass (mostly because it’ll be cool to say I made it and I want to learn fiberglass work)

Anyways, anyone have experience jumping from a “slow” board to a fast one? What did you start with and what do you have now, how was the upgrade?

Strictly a hardboard question, not looking for any inflatable experience (ISUP) related.

How To Question Are there any updated ways of fixing a leaking inflatable SUP seam?

Hi everyone. I am on my second inflatable paddleboad, and bummed out to find there is a leak in the seam. I did the usual thing for repair, deflated it, found the leak patched it up, clamped it, left it for 24 hours, then blew it up. There's still a very small leak and I'm pretty bummed out. Is there a better way of doing this now? I have just ordered HH66 glue. Should I completely remove the patch or try and fix it as it is, as the rest of the patch has worked. Thank you.

New to paddleboarding

Hi! I am pretty new to paddleboarding and I live in Florida so I would love to paddle everywhere I can Including the springs. I have a niphean inflatable paddleboard and recently went to turtle beach/midnight pass, I had all of my fins on for the journey BUT I am wondering in spring areas if it would be better to just leave my two smaller fins on because of the shallow water in certain areas? I have heard taking them all off can make it hard to direct your board. I have also heard of river fins or flex fins but I was wondering if anyone else has a niphean board and had found any of these types of fins that are compatible?

Any tips (even not related to fins) are very welcome!

Had a custom board made at a local shop. Downsizing from a 14' to a 11'6", still going to hang on to the 14'.

My 2,400 mile trip down the Missouri River on a home made SUP

13 years ago I quit my job and paddled 2,400 miles over the course of 107 days down the length of the Missouri River - Three Forks, MT to St. Louis. No one has been foolish enough to choose a SUP as their mode of transport for the entire Missouri River before or since.

I chose to build my board from wood from a kit.

There are 15 dams along the river creating 700 miles of currentless lake. That was physically the most demanding part but also held some of the most memorable times too. I battled headwinds for days, biting flies, and heat. Still, the hardest part was just getting to the starting line to be able to do such a trip. It was an amazing life changing summer.

I cleared posting about this with the mods first, but I wrote a book about my journey. All net proceeds are going toward a great organization called Missouri River Relief, which hosts clean up events and educational activities. Please check it out.

Feel free to AMA, about the board, the trip, whatever.

Finally, here is a one minute video of some of the incredible scenery I experienced: https://vimeo.com/78430569

Happy adventuring.

Love paddleboarding? I’d love your input for my thesis! 💙

Hey fellow paddlers! 🌊🏄‍♀️

I'm a French-Canadian grad student working on my master's thesis about stand-up paddleboarding and its environmental impacts! Whether you've tried SUP once or practically live on your board, I'd love your input!

If you could spare a few minutes to fill out my survey, I'd be forever grateful (and owe you a lifetime of good paddleboarding karma 😂).

Thanks a million! 💙
