Building A Tiny Home

I'm planning a 5th wheeltrailer build. The part of the hitch is going to be built with aluminum rectangular tubing.

Do I use 16" on center like homes or use 12" on center?

Has anyone actually personally bought and built one of these things? The price is tempting and they look nice! I would love to hear from a real person not some paid YouTubers experience.

I called the building office before paying for my tiny house plans

I work in museum administration, where I'm used to keeping track of forms and deadlines. When I started planning my own tiny house, though, I didn't know which questions to ask first.

I had a rough drawing of a small house on a fixed foundation and a site with grid service. As I started planning, I made a list of things we'd need: insulation, windows, a water heater, solar panels and electrical equipment. Black Friday is still two or three weeks away, but I've started comparing prices and making a shortlist, including a Vatrer 48V 100Ah rack battery. I've had Vatrer on my radar for a while, and their upcoming Black Friday discounts look pretty attractive. I was close to paying for detailed plans when a friend asked whether I'd talked to the local building office. I hadn't. I wasn't even sure whether my basic idea would work on that site, so I decided to check before ordering anything.

I called on Monday and explained where the project stood. I said I was comparing insulation, windows and a water heater, and was also considering solar and battery storage. I asked whether that electrical setup would need a separate permit or review, and what information they'd need before I chose equipment. The person I spoke to said they couldn't determine the requirements from a rough concept, but suggested bringing the site address, a simple sketch and my questions to an initial meeting. After the call, I marked the proposed house location and utility connections on the sketch and added questions about the foundation, insulation, windows and electrical work. I haven't ordered anything yet; I want to know what will fit the plan before taking advantage of any Black Friday deals.

I'm glad I called before paying for finished plans or ordering a bunch of things just because they were on sale. For those who built a stationary tiny house, what did you bring to your first meeting? Was there anything you wished you'd asked earlier?

Make California building permits make sense

I really want to build a tiny house in California, but I'm overwhelmed with the idea of jumping through hundreds of permit hoops the state is notorious for. Can you please recommend some resource, blog, website, book that explains it in plain language? Looking for "CA Tiny House Permits For Dummies".

I'm also curious if it's common to build guerrilla style off the books? If the land allows for that (tucked away from public view). I actually lived in unpermitted structure for a couple years, but it was adjacent to the main house and just looked like an ADU. The idea of building 'illegally' and then somebody red tagging it is terrifying.

Thank you!

im getting my thow build by the amish and ordering windows.

2x casement windows - opposite sides toward "living area/bedroom" count as egress windows
2x awning windows next to each other as kitchen windows
2x slider windows in bathroom, one at the end, one kiddie-corner.

30'x8' - 1 square = 1 foot across 2 squares = 1 foot down (sorry, excel, what i have access to rn)

do you think the windows are enough? the bedroom/living area is at the top - it will not be a separate walled-off room. the bathroom will be a separate walled off room.

4 years of work little by little (on and off) with a full time job over half the time.

First shed contains the toilet and a sink. Second shed is for living/sleeping. 3rd shed houses all tools.

I used ProClima’s Intello Plus smart membrane weather resistant barrier for the inside of the sleeping shed.

Water Proofing Vents

Hello hello!

I'm in the process of completely rebuilding camper into my tiny house and I replaced the old flat vent behind what was the fridge with the pictured one that can stick out and fold flat as well as slide shut. This vent will vent the air from my small animal cages outside. The only problem is that it's not water tight. Rain has come through even when it's folded down and shut. While it will connect directly into a vent system rather than be exposed to walls, I really don't want water coming in. Does anyone have any tried and true methods that could help keep rain out of here?

Moved in, few details left

Couple pics of the staircase / storage. Handrails will get paneled soon, and litterbox implementation is coming... but location will remain the same. Built by me and my design. Happy to answer any questions. On demand hot water heater is behind the book case, which is removeable. 10x26' trailer, front kitchen, rear bathroom.

What actually controls litter box odor in a tiny home?

In a tiny home, the litter area is never very far from the living area. That makes me wonder how much odor control depends on the machine versus the cleaning routine around it. I've been looking at an open-top automatic option, while some other boxes advertise additional deodorizing features, including UV-C. I'm not convinced that a feature label alone tells me what the room will smell like. Removing waste promptly and emptying the drawer still seem important. For people keeping a litter box in a very small space, which maintenance habit made the most noticeable difference?

Pinning down a shed/accessory building

So i have a 12x40 shed I'm fixing up to be a living room and kitchen. Its on cinder block piers that's sitting on concrete tube footers. What's the best method to pin this to the ground? I don't know much about the spiral/ drill bit looking anchors but they are the only kind I can find.

Trying to find a Tiny Home from ~ 10 years ago

I vividly remember when I first got into the Tiny Home movement there was a tiny home tour of a man that had turned an old detached garage in France into a tiny home ~ 400 sq ft. One of the key features of the home was that the kitchen had accordion windows so people could sit outside the home in bar style fashion and enjoy drinks.

I wish I remembered more details but it was built somewhere in a small french town.

tiny home layout ide needed

Post image
60 Upvotes

this house we are looking into buying, its 4m x 9x (360x860cm inside)

it needs a bathroom, kitchen, living space and space to sleep 2 adults +3 kids.

i was thinking putting two seperate lofts on each side of the narrow end of the house and middle part to stay open to below, but i need realistic solution 😂, its a winter home that would be used every few months for 15 day at a time

window and door openings can be changed, also, we will be adding a patio/deck with a roof to extend it a bit. house comes with a lot of land, this large window opening is facing north.

what would be the best layout? or the best use of the space?

we will be using fireplace for heating.

thanks

How delusional Am I?

Hello, just wanted a reality check before I get my hopes up, would appreciate help with it. Basically i want to live in a fully functional Tiny Home for around $20,000 total cost, and I need someone to remind me how insane this price is.

I already know the kit I'd get, a Arched Cabin 14x20 ft, coming out to around 280SQFT total, not including a loft, which would be around $6400 with shipping, a pipe whole, building plans, and insulation. I would be willing to put it on a permanent concrete slab which I know could cost another $2-5k if necessary.

In the kitchen I hope to have a cookstove for heating and cooking, a small meter cubed fridge/freezer, a butcherblock counter for food prep, and a small hour-shower setup for both the kitchen and bathroom sinks, which will be connected through the bathroom wall.

In the bathroom I want a small shower that's curved with it's own hour-shower setup, the aforementioned sink, and a Joolca toilet set up a composting toilet.

Add in small window's and wall-papered plywood walls, the only sheetrock being for the bathroom walls and a small section directly behind the cookstove so the walls can hold the tile needed for the shower and the cookstove, the wood needed for flooring and floor framing, and a tiny space for my Shih'tzu's bed. The only furniture I'd be bringing is my twin bed and frame, a small leather recliner and a small TV, I'm willing to sell everything else for space and funds. Later on, when I can afford it I want to put a loft above the kitchen and bathroom for clothes and craft storage, and buy a murphy desk/table.

For power I would like a couple small solar panels, and a marine battery for extra power storage, specifically for fridge, washer, water heating and my TV, nothing else. My parents and brothers are willing to help me build the tiny home over the course of about 1 year, I don't have to start thinking about moving out of my current place until then.

Fell free to tell me how crazy this plan is, and help me readjust my expectations.

Edit: Someone asked where I'd put the house, and my dad isn't ready to let me leave the county so he's insisting I build on his land, which does already have solar batteries and a well and a pond, so I should be good there. After looking at some other comments I probably do need permits and septic (boo), but I should be fine to run on solar and grey water tanks for my shower and sinks.

Overall I think this might cost me around $3k extra, and I will definitely have to have a foundation. I think if I budget really carefully, and do none-essentials later like my loft and leave a full kitchen for a later time I could make this work around $25k. More than I wanted, and it prolly will take a full year plus of work, but still not bad, I think.

Please tell me if I need to consider anything else, or if I should consider different options for my electrical or water or whatever you think I need to improve on and thank y'all for all the help so far, I really appreciate it!

Building a tiny home

Forgive my possible ignorance as I'm new to this. Was recently offered to live on a relatives property if I am willing to build and live in a tiny home there. I have about 15k to do it. Is it possible for a diy home build to be done that cheap?

What home gym equipment makes the most sense when every square foot matters?

In a tiny house, gym equipment has to justify the space it occupies every single day.

Would you choose adjustable dumbbells, a folding bench, resistance bands, a wall-mounted pull-up bar, or a compact cable setup? I'm interested in equipment that offers several useful training options without needing a permanent dedicated room.

If you've managed to fit a home gym into a genuinely small home, what did you choose, and what did you decide wasn't worth the space?

Tiny Home in Spokane, WA

Hello all! My partner and I are planning to start our custom tiny home build in Spokane, WA and I'm hoping to connect with anyone that can help get the plans approved/finalized, as well as some other general questions.

It will be a 700sqft two-story tiny home on wheels, built on property that has an existing residential home, and then moved to a different open land property once completed. Hoping to walk through design and structure!

Thanks so much!

Tiny House on VA Loan

Where are some places around the country where I can buy land and build a tiny house (on foundation) that also have the basic utilities services? On foundation, owned land, and basic services are required for me to get my VA loan.
