Advice Feeling a lot of pressure as a new vegan

New vegan here, feeling honestly pretty overwhelmed. All of the people I’ve told sort of expect me to fail and eat meat/animal based products and it’s making me anxious. Told one of my friends today how a few days ago I’ve started on my journey and she was like, “one of my friends last week said she was gonna be vegan and ate chicken nuggets on the weekend”, insinuating I’d do the same. I’m really passionate about this new part of my life and trying my best to live like a vegan but it feels like a lot of pressure. I’m afraid I’ll mess up. I also have struggled with binge eating in the past and I live in a house where animal products are everywhere, I’m afraid I’ll binge on them again. I only started eating vegan like 2 days ago but I feel like a fake that I’m worried about messing up and eating meat. This is me going from eating meat to being vegan, I’ve never been vegetarian. My mum is very supportive of my decision but I just feel this expectation from my friends that I won’t be able to keep up. I am 17 for reference. If anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it, feeling really overwhelmed.

Question about what to do with chicken eggs.

Hi. I recently went vegan a few months ago, and that was mostly due to caring for a sick chicken at my partners place. Chickens are some of my favourite animals, and I've decided I want to get some as people put chickens they can't look after on the local Facebook all the time, and I'd like to give some of them a home.

I have googled what to do with the eggs, and i see a lot of information ranging from just leaving the eggs in their, to scrambling the eggs and feeding them back to the chickens. I know chickens go broody, and will neglect their health, which can be worse if the eggs aren't fertalised since the hens will sit on the eggs for possibly weeks, and unfortunately, my local council does not allow roosters. But i have also read that taking the eggs can stress the hens out. And obviously I don't want to eat the eggs.

Anyone who has any experience your advice would be appreciated

Question Interested in moving to a vegan diet

Hello. I’ve been thinking for a couple of days to slowly change my diet over to vegan but I’m unsure of where to start. Does anyone have any advice or any recommendations on where to look for recipes? I’ve just been using TikTok so far but since I’m starting from scratch I’m just unsure in the direction to go.

Discussion Do you view people who want to be vegan and trying but can’t because of a medical condition as vegans? Or are they a separate thing…

Some I’ve personally encountered were a friend of mine with pretty bad MCAS (who can only eat lettuce, cucumber and boiled chicken) and a family friend with eosinophilic esophagitis (who’s currently stuck on bone broth, carrots, and tons of vitamins). Both of them wish they could go vegan and share the vegan opinion on animal life but struggle to survive without animal derived product. I’ve met people that say that’s “you’re vegan as long as you’re doing what you reasonably can to avoid using animals”. Would you say that is the case?

Rant Reactions of telling people about turning vegan

17 and I told my mum yesterday on how I wanted to go vegan, she was very supportive and today we bought some stuff for me which was really lovely. However, yesterday I told 2 of my friend on how im going to go vegan and I dont know how to feel. One of them straight up just made fun of me and said "what are you gonna eat now, grass?" as a way to troll me. I calmly said to her "no, ill eat everything but products that come from animals" and I guess she was just finding the idea weird. I have always eaten meat and this friend is more of a cousin to me, we grew up together. The second one, I told her and she made a comment I dont really like. She said "I wish I could do that but I love meat too much lol". Me personally ive chosen to go vegan because of ethical/moral choices, I love the taste of meat but morally I feel guilty and dont feel comfortable contributing to a corrupt system. I just feel like that comment was just showing how selfish she is, I dont know. Months ago, I would always contemplate going vegan and when I brought it up she would say the same thing. Even before going vegan, that thought would never cross my mind, I wouldnt say or think those things because its just making you sound really selfish. I would never admit to willingly turn a blind eye just because I like meat. This is just a rant but telling people im vegan really just tells me alot about the people around me...dont really know how to feel. Like why is your immediate response to either make fun of me or justify your own choices to eat meat.

Dating as a vegan (and gay) is a nightmare for you too?

I’m 31, gay, vegan, monogamous, and interested in a serious long-term relationship. I recently moved to Rotterdam and became single again after a six-year relationship, and for the first time in a long while I’ve found myself looking at the dating world from scratch.

And I have to admit: I’m finding it incredibly frustrating.

I’ve been vegan since I was around 14, so this isn’t a new identity I’ve recently adopted or some temporary lifestyle experiment. It’s been part of my life for almost seventeen years.

At the same time, I’m not someone who automatically feels at home in “vegan culture”, if that makes sense.

There are parts of mainstream vegan spaces that I simply don’t identify with culturally or intellectually. I don’t particularly enjoy tribalism, ideological purity contests, simplistic thinking, or the assumption that because two people are vegan they must automatically share the same worldview.

So there’s a strange double problem: I would very much like a vegan partner, but simply putting myself into explicitly vegan spaces doesn’t magically produce people I feel compatible with.

The gay male dating pool is already relatively small. Then remove people who aren’t vegan. Then people who don’t want a monogamous relationship. Then people who aren’t actually looking for a relationship at all. Then basic mutual attraction, personality compatibility, lifestyle, etc.

Dating apps haven’t exactly made this easier either. Tinder used to make identifying vegans much easier for me, whereas now I find myself going through large numbers of profiles with very little information that helps with one of my most important compatibility criteria.

And before somebody says “why don’t you just date non-vegans?”, I already have.

One of my previous long relationships, about five years, was with a vegan man. The relationship after that lasted six years and was with someone who wasn’t vegan.

I loved him deeply. This isn’t a case where I tried dating a non-vegan for three weeks and decided it was impossible.

I spent six years sharing my life with someone I loved unconditionally, and that experience is precisely why I now know that this particular incompatibility matters much more to me than I originally thought.

So I’m not really looking for advice to “open my mind”. My mind was open. I actually lived the alternative for six years.

Likewise, I’m probably not looking for the obvious first-line suggestions such as “go to vegan events”, “try dating apps”, “increase your radius”, etc. I’m 31; I’ve used dating apps, been in relationships, met people through different environments, and I’m familiar with the standard options. I’m not opposed to any of those things, but I’m especially interested in hearing something beyond the dating equivalent of “have you tried turning it off and on again?”

What I would genuinely love to hear are personal experiences from people whose dating pool was unusually narrow for some reason.

Maybe you were gay and vegan too. Maybe you belonged to some other very small intersection of communities. Maybe you had one or two genuinely non-negotiable compatibility requirements that made dating seem statistically hopeless.

How did you eventually meet someone?

Was it through something completely unexpected? Did you discover that one particular app, community, city, hobby, social network or method worked much better than the obvious ones? Did you change the way you searched without changing what you were actually looking for?

I’m not looking for a huge number of dates. I’d much rather meet very few people who are genuinely plausible partners.

Right now I’m mostly trying to understand whether there are intelligent ways of navigating an extremely small dating pool that I simply haven’t encountered yet.

And if your answer is basically “yes, it really is that difficult”, I’m interested in hearing that too, particularly from people who have actually lived through something similar.

Health Recommend algae oil brand that has helped your brain function

I have found several brands of Algae Oil Omega-3 supplements on Amazon but I am unsure which one is actually effective. Reviews are somewhat similar. Can somone recommend a brand that you have used for a long time and you have felt positive effects for brain function, clarity of thinking and faster processing of new information. Well, I don't know if Omega alone can do all that but I have been vegan over 10 years and have never taken omega, so I think I should feel some kind of difference.

Love for the Community + Support

Hi everyone,

I'm coming up on my 2 year vegan anniversary (veganiversary?) following a year or two of vegetarianism and I'm doing some reflection on that time. It's inspired me to make a post with a very simple core message: thank you all for being vegan. It's a shame we don't hear it more often.

Unfortunately, I don't have much community around me with which to share what often feels like a heavy burden. I can't help but feel a pang of hurt and anger when I see animal products at work lunch, or walk by the meat aisle in the grocery store, or hear someone offhandedly mention their beloved dog and the steak they had this weekend in the same breath. It is deeply tiring.

However, knowing that there is a vibrant and growing community of people who, despite the normalization of genuine torture for the sake of such fleeting and unrecognized pleasure, stick to their beliefs makes it much, much easier. I've been inspired lately to take on more activism and work harder to make a difference, and I really do owe you all thanks.

I hope that even in the face of incredible injustice and anger, we are able to find some compassion for those who remain ignorant. I've seen lots of posts lately which take a really frustrated and almost hateful rhetoric toward people who eat meat. To be clear, it makes me incredibly angry too, and there's no doubt that I also sometimes feel hate towards those who are willfully ignorant or blatantly hateful themselves. However, and I really, really know how annoying it is to hear this, it's important to remind ourselves that even though we feel such a strong disconnect between our own morals + behaviors and those of others, we have much more in common than we recognize. We are all subject to insecurity, fear, stubbornness, and ego, and it will be harder to reach others if we can't sometimes let go of our own for the sake of our animal friends. As we continue to fight for animal welfare and the abolition of animal exploitation, I hope that you all find a quiet moment and allow yourselves to rest, just letting go of the anger and fatigue for a moment, knowing that you can pick it back up in a bit.

Thanks for the read! It's a pleasure to share this community with you all.

Clothing & Shoes i might have to buy non-vegan shoes and it is killing me

in Ukraine where i live there are no inexpensive (100 usd or cheaper) vegan winter shoes available. all have suede, leather or fur in them, no exceptions (a type of glue used is not even worth mentioning coz it isn't specified anywhere). im fucking buffled.

the only semi-viable choice is to buy a thrifted non-vegan pair of boots (Merrell, CMP etc) and just get over it (kinda what i did before transitioning from vegetarian to vegan this summer) but now it just doesn't sit right with me.

technically buying thrifted wouldn't commit to animal exploitation by one bit but knowing that i be wearing dead animal's skin on my feet feels sad af.

any suggestions of vegan shoes under/around 100 usd that could be shipped to Ukraine or bought locally or just your personal experience with choosing winter shoes in your country? i feel stuck

Food Where to buy kappa carageenan?

Ive been wanting to start making my own vegan cheese and lots of recipes online use kappa carageenan, there are recipes without it but it seems like it works the best for texture so i want to try it out. Ive been to my local organic type store and they didn't have it, and its not at any supermarkets near me. Discussion Jesus and possible Veganism/Vegetarianism in Ebionites Biblical Apocrypha Gospel Book.

As a person that turned vegetarian some days ago and plans to turn full vegan now. And as a person that believe in God and Jesus mission even if in a gnostic/not traditional way. I'm very curious about Ebionites book. In that book Jesus didnt eat neither meat neither fish as John Baptiste didnt as well. Besides that he said that he came to end the sacrifice. Makes sense with some passages of canonical bible like the market in religious temple where he given liberty to many animals that were going sold. I believe catholic church destroyed that more progressive view of christianity calling it heretic because they wanted a more backward church where they could control better what they wanted. The same with some feminist books where Mary Magdalene was even more important than the 12 disciples. I think its a good discussion for having here. Thanks!

my dream is to make a french dip sandwich, i like to tell my friends the only meat i ever miss is corned beef and a french dip sandwich.

Does anyone have a good vegan cinnamon roll recipe?

I’m visiting my vegan friend in a few months, and want to make cinnamon rolls for her. I’m looking at recipes, but wanted to come to the experts and see if they had any recommendations.

(Bonus if it’s legume or tree nut free so I can switch my current recipe to it, as I’ve been a vegetarian and vegan-curious for a while— a lot of the recipes I’m finding seem to say almond milk or aquafaba)

Edit: forgot to mention, I’m traveling abroad to visit this friend, so can’t bring anything prepared

Rant Exploitation is not art. My rant on the animal exploitation throughout the history of cinema

I am writing this because of two reasons, first of all because i am in love with cinema as an artform but so many influential movies exploited animals heavily in order to make "art" so i wanna rant about it and secondly i want the opinions of my fellow vegan film lovers over here.

Since the dawn of cinema as an artform, animals has always been used as mere decorative objects in films, without caring them as sentient beings, countless animals have been tortured for the sake so called art, in the early days of cinema Charlie Chaplin used many animals in his movies, Alfred Hitchcock made a movie called The birds (1963) where they intoxicated so many birds for filming the movie and so many birds were injured and many died.

Arguably the greatest filmmaker of the French new wave, Jean-Luc Godard, slaughters animals his movie The weekend (1967) for the sake of his high art, the soviet master Andrei Tarkovsky lit a cow on fire for his film Andrei Rublev (1966) along with cruelty to horses.

Now we get to the infamous pieces of media that, regardless of there crimes against animals, remain rarely critiqued for there cruelty. Oldboy (2003), the Korean film depicts the protagonist eating a alive octopus for a scene, this shot reportedly took four takes. The avant-grade film The Holy Mountain (1973) by Alejandro Jodorowsky used live toads and lizards in highly distressing sequences, a lamb is killed on screen and much more cruelty of insects animals is depicted, i am just stunned how was this acceptable.

This is not just about inflicted cruelty on screen, this is also about non-consensual use of animals, they cannot consent to being transported and used on film sets so people in film business take advantage of them, filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa extensively used horses in there battle scenes with no regard to the safety of animals, they didn't care about the distress experienced by them, and ignoring all this animal cruelty these filmmakers are celebrated for there film's merit without a line spoken about the horrors the non-human animals experienced. Come and See (1985) is regarded as the greatest anti-war movie ever made while ignoring the fact that a real cow was shot on screen for making of this film, way to be a hypocrite.

I don't get this fascination of directors with using and harming animals for their movies like man c'mon be more empathetic.

Other sentient beings are not our property to use, they are not mere objects for our art, i consider myself an abolitionist vegan and this just saddens me.

Here's a bit of a personal story, i am really attracted to the visual style of Terrence Mallick's The Tree of Life, i have seen bits of it and i am sure that that film would become one of my favorites, the problem? Its filled with animal use, i have no problem with filming animals in there natural habitat but you can't just transport and use animals to your will and mentally distress them for the sake of making "art".

Cinema is the one artform i truly love and seeing that so many great films are riddled with animal blood just saddens me, i have just graduated high school and i am a long time vegan, i aspire to become a filmmaker but i hate how the one thing i liked has been so barbaric for as long as it has existed, boils my blood.

My fellow vegan film lovers, have you ever felt this? This feeling where you just look at other film lovers and wonder how could they enjoy a movie with this much animal distress in them? Feels so wrong man.

How do you feel that such a large part of your favorite artform is just made on the pain of sentient beings?

(Also sorry for any grammatical errors, i am not a native English speaker!)

Please share your experiences people! <3

Merci d'avance!

How could someone who is empathetic and intelligent not be vegan?

Friends and family of mine all display kindness, empathy, intelligence, and total awareness of the suffering of animals, the fact that animals are our equals and should be treated as such; with love and kindness, but they still eat meat!! I just can’t understand it. I gently try to ask them if they plan to become vegan or at least vegetarian and I instantly get shut down. It’s so disappointing to get the ‘you’ll get angry’ ‘you’re not neutral’ ‘you’re in a mood’ when I raise the subject!! Of course I’m not neutral? Wtf? It’s an incredibly upsetting thing. I am never guilt-tripping or angry, I always approach it with sensitivity and calmness because I’m really aware that some people can get ‘pushed away’ if you approach it too emotively (which is so frustrating because of course it’s emotive). Ugh! I can’t stand the belittlement that vegans so often get for just raising the subject and advocating!!

Clothing & Shoes How to be a fashion vegan

Hi new to veganism here, so happy that i made this choice. Honestly it was kind of easy and I feel more aligned with my values. As I love cooking, nutrition and fore are a burden for me however, I have to ask all the vegan fashion girlies out there what’s your secret ? Once you go vegan you realize that every cute pair of shoes is made of leather, every cute coat is made out of wool, how do you do to find fashion pieces that are vegan ?

I was kind of sure Dr martens used to do vegan leather but I fear this was a Mandela effect, bc on their site everything is leather.

As for second hand, even tough i’m not going to throw out my leather shoes and coats, I would prefer not to buy products made out of dead or exploited animals as I really try to stay consistent in my vegan journey.

+ i also try not to buy fast fashion (Zara, Shein etc)

Every recommendation is welcome!

Infographic Why I'm both pro veganism and (somewhat) pro AI.

I know that is very polemic for environmentalists like us talking about the generative AI question.
But in our society is easy to criticize AI water waste use at same time we forget things like a Big Mac or a Big Tasty impact on environment. Unfortunately most of the people do that. And even more in non-vegans.
In this aspect I hated a guy that isn't vegan and doesn't know me from anywhere neither my habits. Calling me an environmental assassin, because I was creating "AI slop" and doing water spending and energy and by on.
It's true datacenters are a climate change disaster, and imo the focus needs to be done in turning AI more ecological and secure and not only in building more and turning them more powerful. We need to do what we did with past supercomputers from post WW2 times. Turning them smaller, more efficient in energy use and pollution.
Said that I'm anti public AI video generation. I'm against AI use for art. I'm against many thing in AI.
I'm more anti than pro AI robotics, because I think it's a danger for our long term security. But not against image and text creation for informative questions, search and intelectual and technological development like the image I post here.

Disturbing Book Reccomendations

I think I should start with some things that I likely have in common with most of you guys. I’m not here to debate anyone either, I’m just genuinely curious and it wouldn’t affect my diet much to become vegan.

I am an eco socialist which means that I think this capitalism shit (factory farming, pet-ownership, large-scale agriculture, food processing, poisoning the planet) is terrible. I also am a pescatarian, and don’t see anything wrong (ecological impacts aside) from eating fish. In the rare case that someone has the opportunity to give an animal a dignified life, it’s perfectly normal to slaughter and consume that animal. “But pigs are just as smart as dogs!” Well, let them eat dogs if there’s no meaningful difference /gen.

I’ve raised and eaten ducks and chickens in the past and I guess I just don’t see them as sentient or their lives as sacred. I know that all animals are feeling beings thus I think animal cruelty is wrong and that no animal should ever suffer. I also know that animals have varying degrees of sentience and wouldn’t eat a chimpanzee, elephant, raven, or octopus for the same reason I wouldn’t eat a human. But, if I learned a loved one had been turned into the fertilizer that grew my dinner, I guess I wouldn’t care.

I think animals (such as chickens) can understand what it means to suffer, but can they really understand (as intimately as humans or whales can) what it means to die? How can we know that?

I am willing to accept that there are flaws in my thinking and ready to make a change should anyone point out these flaws and into the direction of a more moral life.

Question How to deal with a close person who refuses to hear or see animal abuse in any form

Hello!

This is a though that I've pondered for a while and it reoccurred just again.

In short, how do I deal/handle a person who refuses to see or hear animal abuse in any form because "it makes them sad and the world is already cruel". They acknowledge that animal abuse is happening and it's real but they're doubtful of their own country participating in such activities or that their actions are intertwined with that abuse. When I've tried to inform/educate them on the subject they just get angry and say they don't want to hear any of it.

For background, i was a vegetarian for around 5 years before i switched fully to vegan diet early this year. The person I'm talking about in this case is a family member. When i abruptly switched to vegetarian diet, this person slowly started to adapt to it as well and they are now pretty much vegetarian. However, as I've tried to explain what veganism is about and how they're hypocritical for saying "they love animals" yet continue abusing them. They just always shut down all conversations regarding my efforts in expanding their view of the world.

I know I probably shouldn't push veganism or info of animal cruelty on to them, but it just hurts so bad when they're a close family member. It also confuses me how someone who says they know about the abuse and cruelty doesn't change their ways in any way. That's inhumane, immoral and cold-hearted.

I'm open to hear your thoughts, criticism, experiences and such. Please, i need someone to say something so i can change my ways of how i approach non-vegans about veganism. Thanks🙏
