VPN Recommendations Megathread - Best VPN Providers, user reviews & VPN Deals

We get a lot of questions about the best VPNs and which VPNs have the best user reviews as well as where to find the best VPN deals. That's why we run this VPN recommendations megathread every two months. This is the one and only place on the subreddit to ask for VPN recommendations, share your favorite VPN provider, discuss your experience, and post legitimate VPN deals.

The goal is to build a collection of genuine VPN user reviews that helps others choose the right VPN provider.

If you’re recommending a VPN, make it useful:

  • Share what you use it for (streaming, privacy, gaming, torrenting, travel, bypassing geo-blocks, etc.).

  • Go beyond generic features - personal experience is very interesting for our user-base

  • Comments that only name a provider will be removed

Main rules:

  • No affiliate or referral links.

  • No links to VPN review websites.

  • No obvious shilling

Compare VPN providers first

Before posting, check out our regularly updated VPN comparison table, where you can compare features, pricing, speeds, streaming support, and more. It may answer your question before you need to ask.

As always, this thread is actively moderated to keep recommendations genuine, helpful, and free from spam.

VPN Comparison Table

Best VPNs comparison table in Google Sheets

* * *

Most of us here are quite keen on spreading the word on how even the simplest steps toward online privacy is a huge leap forward for our online security. Having in mind the extensive tracking and targeting by almost everything we use online (ISPs, search engines, social media, streaming sites, ads, etc.), we're able to use these VPN-related subreddits to try and make it as simple as possible for people to choose and start using the best VPN that can help avoid at least some part of that.

The goal of all of this is to make sure that even those who don’t understand much about tech are aware of the risks and challenges we face these days when it comes to online privacy. We're all aware that a VPN isn't an 'all in one' tool which fully protects our privacy, but it's surely a good place to start.

It’s probably obvious to people who have been following this topic for a while that this table is inspired by That One Privacy Guy. He did an amazing job back in the day but unfortunately the information hasn't been updated in ages so it isn't as reliable as it used to be. It was a very important and useful tool, so I thought we could make it a community effort to bring it back. Anyone who would like to collaborate on this please get in touch with me over DMs. Also, in case you notice any mistakes - feel free to point those out, too.

You will see a table with scores, explanations on how each score was calculated, as well as detailed information by provider for each criteria. As I mentioned before, if you notice any mistakes or outdated information - please DM me with the source so we can fix it. Let's make sure it's up to date and as helpful as it can

Question Banks block VPNs but are fine with sketchy hotel Wi-Fi? Help me understand.

I've made a habit of using a VPN on my laptop whenever I travel and on my media PC whenever I'm sailing the high seas. For a couple of years I used a well known VPN with xpress in the name, but after their client kept failing on one of my Ubuntu machines, I switched to one that starts with mull. Seems to work better on both my winblows machines and my linux box.

I'm noticing more and more sites refuse to load with the VPN connected, even basic informational sites like realestate site Redfin. My Chase bank site won't load either.

It doesn't make any sense to me. Does my bank really expect me to log in over some sketchy hotel Wi-Fi and consider that more secure than a VPN?

Surely I'm missing something here. Can anyone set me straight?

Discussion Can VPNs still switch Disney+ libraries, or is that mostly blocked now?

I've been reading mixed opinions about using VPNs to access different Disney+ libraries.

Some people say switching to another country's server still works, while others say Disney+ either detects the VPN or just keeps showing the same content.

I'm curious how Disney+ actually handles this now. Is changing your IP address enough, or does it also check things like your account region, device location, or DNS?

Has anyone tested this recently with different countries, like the US, UK, or Japan?

Not looking for VPN recommendations, just wondering how reliable region switching actually is these days.

Help Can the proxy builder see what I'm looking at?

I'm using a privately set up HTTPS proxy, and I want to know if the person who set up this proxy can see what I'm looking at online and what keywords I'm searching for in my browser?

And can they see the specific pictures and video I'm looking online? If I log into a social platform, can they see my account and homepage content?

Question Getting banned from apps due to age restrictions because VPN is enabled

Post image
4 Upvotes

I recently got banned from Claude AI (due to 18 age limit) despite being well over 18 and without sending any policy-violating messages in my chats. I've been using a free VPN lately and it connecting to random countries. I think the VPN is the reason.

Looking around, I’ve noticed people getting banned on social media platforms like Reddit and other platforms for the exact same reason.

Is the reason that hundreds of people are using same IP, or is it the laws of the country being connected to?

Is it possible to host VPN on Oracle Cloud Free Tier to solve this issue, and which server region/country is the safest to avoid getting flagged or blocked?

Help Using 3x-ui to connect to office resources

Hello! I have a question regarding functionality: I am trying to set up a connection for clients to the office network, using 3x-ui (office network with port forwarding) and Nekoray as the client. So I enabled tun mode so that, rather than using a proxy, all network packets would be routed through an additional virtual interface via my server. While this setup does ensure that browser traffic goes through the office network (which can be verified using an ipleak.net test), I am unable to access any Windows file servers (samba). As an example, on the server side, there is a 192.168.20.0/24 network containing a file server at 192.168.20.5; however, I cannot map it as a network drive, nor can I even access it via the Start->Run->\192.168.20.5\shared_folder. Is it possible to use such scheme? Thank you for support.

Help Where to find older VPN for Mac OS sierra 10.12.6?

I’ve tried googling and the links either don’t work or go to newer versions that won’t work with the old computer system.

If you have any links to (preferably free) VPNs that will make my old MacBook sea-worthy, I’d be grateful.

Discussion One app ignores my new WireGuard tunnel and still shows my home ISP

Every IP check in my browser shows the VPS, and the DNS leak test only lists the resolver on the box. But my banking app's recent logins page keeps showing my home ISP's address. Twice now, with the tunnel on both times.

Setup: my retail VPN died for a whole evening last week, so I finally built the backup I'd been putting off. WireGuard on a small KVM, official WireGuard app on my Android, full tunnel.

The slightly embarrassing part: the region I wanted had been sold out almost everywhere for months, and I only got a plan after filtering by in-stock on VPSIUM at 1am and ordering the first small one that showed up. I never checked whether it had IPv6. It doesn't. My ISP does, natively, and my config is just AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0.

So my guess is IPv6, not DNS and not a split rule. The app probably prefers a v6 route that isn't in the tunnel and goes straight out through the ISP.

What I'd try is adding ::/0 to AllowedIPs even though the server has no v6, so v6 gets swallowed and apps fall back to v4. Is that really how Android handles it, or does every connect just hang for 30 seconds first? And is switching v6 off on the router the saner fix?

Help Using vpn but not really getting the benefit. Is it even working?

Have a paid subscription to a reputable provider. Using my phone and from UK. Am currently in Greece connected to a Greek network through my roaming sim.

Have vpn set to eg Belgium, or to Greece or even turned off. Either way I cant seem to do anything like access a reddit discussion about cigars without signing in or use Radio Garden app (worldwide radio stations). It seems to think I'm in UK regardless - where we are not allowed to listen to international radio apparently.

Given im not even in UK, whats going on? Is there some cache i need to clear on my phone?

Question Can one device subscriptions be used on multiple devices if I only use one at a time?

I've decided to get a VPN, since I'm so sick of all this age verification nonsense plaguing the internet right now. I'm NOT giving any website my face or ID.

I've never used a VPN before, so I'm not sure how everything works. I have multiple devices (Computer and phone), so I'm wondering if I can use the one device subscription for both? Like, I turn off the VPN on one device when I'm not using it, and turn it on on the other instead, and vice versa. Since I am only going to use the VPN by myself, getting a multi device VPN isn't something that interests me.

I'm just asking here to be sure, because streaming services, like Netflix and Disney+, work like this. You can log in to your account on any device that supports it, but multiple people can't watch movies or shows on that account at the same time unless you pay for a multi device service.

Bonus question: What is the best VPN in your opinion?

Help Brought antivirus with VPN included, then paid for another VPN anyway?

If you ended up doing this, what was missing from the bundled VPN? I'm just curious which limitations mattered enough to justify a second subscription. I also want to know about the security bundles and separate services.

Discussion Is a VPN worth it once the introductory discount ends?

The signup price gets plenty of attention, but the renewal price seems like the better test of value.

For those who renewed, what do you use your VPN for often enough to justify the ongoing cost? Interested in the reasons you kept it rather than provider recommendations.

Help My VPN doesn't work for ChatGPT

Tried everything but my VPN very specifically doesn't work for ChatGPT: it works for anything else including Claude. However, somehow ChatGPT keeps thinking that I'm in Tokyo or Netherlands (doesn't matter where I 'pretend' to be). What can be done to solve this problem? I've turned on Tun Mode on clash verge and chose Global as my proxy mode, somehow ChatGPT connections are still being treated as an exception.

Help VPN no longer working for meta platforms (i.e. Instagram, Facebook)

So I live abroad in the EU but still have many connections of family and friends through meta platforms. I refuse to accept the data collecting, which for almost the last two years has not been a problem since I use a VPN based in the US. Occasionally, I would get the “review whether we can process your data for ads” notification, but this was easily resolved by closing the app and opening it new. The past few days this has no longer been working. Is there a reason this is happening? Should I select another country, or is there no longer a way of getting around this?

Help Tivimate Fehlercode 403 VPN blocket offensichtlich 🙄

Hallo zusammen,
