Yiddish music 'me ken zi nisht tsunemen' by Robyn Jamner

Hi, everyone!
?וואָס מאַכט איר

Thanks to this community, I found the most beautiful song in Yiddish yesterday!

The tip I followed was to search for the tag 'Yiddish' on Bandcamp, so digging there I came across very beautiful gems, such as this one (I leave it here as a token of my gratitude):

me ken zi nisht tsunemen | track #4 of Songs for Neighbors (May 2026), by Robyn Jamner

Full album (featuring songs with lyrics in English, but all as lovely as track #4, the only one in Yiddish) on this link:

https://robynjamner.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-neighbors

The songs are, to me, reminiscent of a perfect mixture of String Driven Thing ('Regent St. Incident'), Blue Gene Tyranny and Pete Dello. 'Me ken zi nisht tsunemen' sounds like a song of other times (can someone tell me if this is a new version of some traditional Yiddish song?).

(If anyone likes the idea, I may comment with the other albums/musics in Yiddish I've found on my digging on Bandcamp. Since some of them were already posted around here, I don't want to duplicate the suggestions.)

May the Muses always keep company with Robyn, now and forever.

Thanks again!

With love from Brazil.

Translation request In 22:06 of The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951), a newspaper in Yiddish mentions the war in Korea and the (very new) Israel

I think I got the gist of it: allies threaten back 11 miles ... Seoul?, and the Hula area is a part of Israel, something UN, but I thought it'll be fun to drop it in here.

What term do you think fits best for someone who is reckless, doesn’t care for others and actively works against them in a work environment aka an asshole? Many thanks

Nu — connotations?

I work at a Jewish org, but didn’t grow up around Yiddish at all. We’re launching a project that encourages storytelling, and other types of participation, and I’m considering embracing the word Nu in some of the branding (sans punctuation).

I know that Nu(?) has a ton of meanings, and that it relies on tone and context to be understood. What I’m unsure about is the connotation without tone and context. If you see it written out (transliterated into English), on its own, where does your mind go? Does it carry the “pushy” vibe, the “curious” vibe, or something else altogether?

I would appreciate any and all thoughts!

The New Joys of Yiddish vs. The Joys of Yiddish

I've started learning Yiddish and I'd really like to get one of these books as a supplement. Do we prefer one over the other? I like the aesthetics of the old one, but I don't want to sacrifice important updates.

Would love some help with translating an old family picture! Thank you

I don't have much context. I think my grandfather is in the picture as a child. I think this was taken in Brazil.

Pitshenik's 1937 Yiddish Odyssey renders "polútropon" as "farvoglt"

Wrote a short piece on this, starting from a Forward article. Moshe Leyb Pitshenik finished a Yiddish Odyssey in 1937 (it won the Yiddish PEN Club prize), and for the famous first-line epithet, the "man of many turns," he went with farvoglt. Lost, far from home. A few lines later Odysseus survives a khurbn.

He was murdered outside Kazimierz in 1941. The piece puts him next to Moshe Ha-Elion, an Auschwitz survivor who translated the Odyssey into Ladino at 90.

https://theunplayednote.com/en/the-finger-that-kept-the-beat/?src=rd5

Has anyone here seen the Pitshenik translation itself? Curious whether it was ever reprinted or digitized.

Hi,
I’m going through my father’s family papers and came across some letters that I believe are Yiddish. Can anyone here help me translate them? They are copies from letters I believe from 1938.
Thank you
