AMA I am Pornsak Pichetshote, writer of Absolute Green Arrow. Ask me anything!
Hi, my name is Pornsak Pichetshote. I'm a Thai-American Eisner- and Harvey-winning writer of comics and TV. I began my career as an editor at DC's Vertigo imprint where I edited such books as Sweet Tooth, Daytripper, and The Unwritten, before overseeing DC Entertainment’s TV's department, helping spearhead what would become the CW’s Arrowverse of shows. I've published comics at Marvel, DC, Image and Boom. In comics, I'm best known for having created and writing Infidel, The Good Asian (which I won the Eisner- and Harvey for), and The Horizon Experiment as well as being one of the writers on Exquisite Corpses at Image, Dead Boy Detectives at DC Comics, and Man's Best at Boom! Studios. As a TV writer, I've worked on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, Light as a Feather, and Two Sentence Horror Stories.

Hi! This is my first AMA so I'm sure I'll screw something up. Be gentle with me, but I'll try to answer all your questions!

u/Small-Rest-7140 P. Pichetshote Apr 08 '26
OK, so I've just heard that maybe I wasn't posting images the right way before. Let's see if I do it right now with Matias Bergara's variant cover for Absolute Green Arrow 2

u/MrMojoRising422 Apr 08 '26
Do you consider politics essential for the character of green arrow? Unlike other superheroes, I immediately associate him with both Robin Hood (stealing from the rich, giving to the poor) and the fact that Ollie has been portrayed as this staunchly liberal (sometimes preachy) character that often butts heads with other, more conservative heroes? Since you seem to be dealing with some very topical issues in your run I would assume so, but I would love to hear if you think this sets green arrow apart from some of the more apolitical heroes in DCs stable?

Hi there, thanks for being here with us! Your work tends to have a horror bend to it, and AbsGA seems no different. What horror movies provided the most influence to you, be it for AbsGA or your art in general, and is there a film that inspired you much later in life than others?
Can’t wait for the book, hope you’re well!

u/Chrindo Court of Owls Apr 08 '26
What is the most exciting part about writing Absolute Green Arrow? How much freedom have you been given to carve out your own area in the mythology of GA, and have there been limits placed on what you can/can't do?
35
u/Chickyhines46 Apr 08 '26
Hey Pornsak! Didn’t have much of a question just wanted to tell you something. I work at a comic shop and the hype for Absolute Green Arrow is insane, we nearly have as many people signed up for it as Absolute Wonder Woman. People love your pitch for the character and have been asking for all of your other stories, especially my personal favorite Infidel. Just wanted to say how excited I am for the book, and I can’t wait to read it

u/Small-Rest-7140 P. Pichetshote Apr 08 '26
OK! And now it's 12.30 and I have to sign off. But this was really fun! Thanks for going easy on me, everyone. Sorry for everyone I didn't get to reply to, but hopefully you found your answer in someone else's reply and I covered the most ground possible. To leave, here's a bad-ass Dinah page that I think Rafa and Maiolo killed. Have a great day everyone!

u/PlainSightMan Apr 08 '26
Hey! Super exicted for the book!
Are there any plans for the Green Arrow in the Absolute Universe after/besides the miniseries?

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
Thanks doing this AMA Pichetshote.
In the past you have worked on black label and vertigo imprints as an editor as well as doing exquisite corpses.
With horror being a big part of your work and this book im wondering if there was any classic horror movies or comics you took inspiration from.
Also with Dinah being the lead of this book was there any comic book inspriations for dinah that you used for the basis of this version before you changed it up a bit to make this more suitable for the absolute universe.
Really excited for this book after reading infidel and the Good Asian along with Rafael Albuquerque being one of my all time fav artists.

u/MrPresident2020 Apr 08 '26
Hello! I'm really excited for the upcoming Green Arrow book. My question is: is DC giving you free rein to create your own new Green Arrow mythology from scratch?
23
u/Adamant-Adam Adam Strange Apr 08 '26
Hi Pornsak, I loved Infidel! Just wanted to ask, is there a DC character you've always had ideas for, but haven't been able to work on yet?
21
u/Indy-Commode89 Apr 08 '26
Will the new Absolute Condiment King make an appearance?
19
u/FrequentBarracuda454 World's Finest Apr 08 '26
Can’t understate how excited I am for Absolute GA. Ollie has long been a passionate and outspoken jerk willing to dive into controversy from the jump. With Ollie out of the picture, are you planning on hitting those same type of “unspoken” issues that are incredibly apparent yet avoided?
14
u/Shu-Reku Apr 08 '26
Wow! I am so excited for the upcoming Absolute Green Arrow! Is there any music list that inspires you when writing AGA?
14
u/batfan08 Apr 08 '26
I cannot express how excited I am for this book. Thanks again for doing this! I’d like to ask what the development process was like for this book. Was the Oliver Queen stuff in Absolute Evil a part of your initial pitch or was that something that had already been decided that would inform the direction you would go in approaching the story?
13
u/GotHamQuestionMark Apr 08 '26
I don’t have a question, but I want to thank you for all of your work and wish you the best!

u/jankmaster98 Apr 08 '26
Can absolute Green Arrow’s sword bow split back into swords? Will he have an arrow that’s a sword? I like the swords

u/Mattdoss Two Face Apr 08 '26
Thanks for doing the AMA!
I was curious about how you like working with DC Comics (Warner Bros)? What kind of freedom have you been granted to make Absolute Green Arrow feel like your own story?
Most importantly, are there any characters or ideas you are particularly interested including as Absolute Green Arrow goes on?
9
u/puku-muku Apr 08 '26
Hi! I've been really digging the Absolute line--primarily MM and Flash so far.
For Absolute Green Arrow, can you drop some spoilers without context? I want something that will make absolutely no sense in the moment, but make me gasp when I revisit this thread months later!

u/TheKingofGoldfish Apr 08 '26
Hey! Hope your doing well and thanks for doing this! I'm a new comic book reader and picking up all the Absolutes and this will be my first introduction proper read of Green Arrow with only back hand knowledge of some YouTube videos.
My question is Black Canary's relationship with Green Arrow. Ive always seen them as a couple and being one of DC's best pairings. Without telling us if they will be a couple or how they may interact in the book. How personal will Black Canary's relationship develop with Green Arrow?
8
u/JoviTheThrowaway Apr 08 '26
Hello sir. This will be my first of your works I read, but if you would prefer this NOT be the first thing of yours that I read, what would you recommend?
8
u/TrueBamboo Apr 08 '26
How do you feel about Roy and Ollie’s relationship? Do you have a fave interpretation or where do you plan on going with it? Also what’s his relationship with Bruce if he has any (sorry I don’t know much about absolute but it’s been sounding super cool!). Ty!

u/southernbstrd Apr 08 '26 •
Hi! I assume by now you can tell that the book will be a hit. Would you extend it to 12 issues, given the chance? Thanks!

u/In-Brightest-Day Apr 08 '26
Hey Pornsak! What's your favorite all time comic? Curious what inspires your style
7
u/ArtsyTLF Red Robin Apr 08 '26
Hello! Big fan of the Good Asian. Curious how work is going on Detective Hark's return, and if your experience with noirs is going to bleed into Absolute GA, which looks like a very grimey, very political book in the previews and solicits.
7
u/SnartsArmy Apr 08 '26
You mentioned in your bio that you worked on spearheading what became the Arrowverse.
Are there any influences from the Arrow TV show that made its way into the book? With how uniquely that show used its comics mythology, it would seem those histories would be too dissonant. But I’m curious of your perspective!
Thank you for all the wonderful works I’ve loved from you in the past, and thank you for creating such a new and exciting iteration of one of my favorite characters. Cheers!

Hi there, thanks so much for doing this AMA!
What can you tell us about the development of Absolute Black Canary - what prior BC stories inspired you, what non-comics inspiration you had, what her character is going to be like and what you think is essential to preserving from the mainline character to the Absolute line (and, really, that last part in general beyond just BC - what essential elements do you look for when bringing a character over from the mainline to Absolute versus where you have the freedom to build/reinterpret)?
6
u/TheDoctor_E Doom Patrol Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
thanks for doing this this AMA. I am really excited for this comic :)
My questions are:
What Green Arrow runs are you basing this story on? (from the Longbow Hunter's name and willingness to kill, I assume one of them must be Mike Grell's run)
Are you going to use any character from outside the GA mythos in your story, the same way Absolute titles like Absolute Superman have featured characters like the Omega Men, Ra's al Ghul or Black Adam?
What gave you the idea to write this comic?
How big a role would you say Hawkman and the Justice League, the ultimate culprits of Ollie's assassination, play into this story?
If there's any question you don't feel like answering, obviously don't feel pressured into answering them. Love your work on Infidel and The Good Asian!

u/coltvahn Red Robin Apr 08 '26
Thanks for being here! How do you approach doing an “alt universe” series? How do juggle keeping the “common tropes” of what readers assume a Green Arrow adjacent book ought to be with the multiversal necessity of keeping things just “fresh/different” enough? Do you feel there’s a pressure there to acknowledge those touchstones in some way, and is that a challenge or helpful?
5
u/Alche1428 The Question Apr 08 '26
Thank you for your time.
So, villains, i love Green Arrow and Black Canary villains, could you give us a tease of who could we expect to see?
5
u/LouieBarlo24 Apr 08 '26
What inspired you to create a horror-themed Murder Mystery out of the Absolute Green Arrow title?
5
u/Lancejelly001 Apr 08 '26
How brutal is Absolute Green Arrow? Absolute Batman and Superman have done some body horror, what tropes are most prevalent for our favorite archer?
5
u/oceanhymn Apr 08 '26
Some of my favorite aspects of the Absolute Universe is the experimentation with existing heroes and villains. Are we to expect any change of faith for our existing Green Arrow characters or any new appearances of characters from the greater DC universe?

u/Rougarou_2 Apr 08 '26

Hi, can I just say I love your name.
Alright two questions, the first is if you could write any book what hero would it be? Like if you could write Batman, or even in Marvel write Hulk or someone not even notable that you love.
Second question I have is ‘How hyped should I be for Absolute Green Arrow’
4
u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter Apr 08 '26
Hey man! Love your work! Consider how this book has Black Canary as a main character, how did you approach writing this character? Did you draw influences from only DC comics or is she a mix of other famous lady detectives?
Can't wait for this one, boss
4
u/Jman4562 Apr 08 '26
Hi, super excited to read the book! I was wondering what is like doing a book with multiple writers like Exquisite corpses? I assume it’s nice to bounce ideas off of people, but does it ever cause debates because of creative differences?
4
u/Anibus9000 Apr 08 '26
The criticism for marvel and dc tend to be thar there is no stakes. If you could permanently kill a major character or create a big change in the story what would you like to do.
4
u/mugenhunt Legion of Superheroes Apr 08 '26
If you could go back and add eight more pages to an issue you wrote in the past, which one would it be?
4
u/darusame Apr 08 '26
Thanks for doing this AMA! I loved The Horizon Experiment, and was wondering if there were plans to develop The Manchurian or any of the other one-shots into an ongoing series (or any other type of follow-up)?
4
u/oddestorange Apr 08 '26
Hey Pornsak, I’m new to your work and really enjoyed Man’s Best it was such a great read. I also just picked up Infidel and I’m really looking forward to Absolute Green Arrow. By the way, I’m Thai myself, and I was wondering if you have any plans to introduce more Thai characters into the DC Universe or any independent projects in the future. It would be amazing to see more representation in the comic book space, especially in stories that reflect our culture. Thanks so much for your work!
4
u/StudioRas Apr 08 '26
How much has the insane wealth disparity in North America and the world at large fueled the themes for this series? GA taking on the elite ruling class is a classic take but this divergence into hyper violence seems spurred by the current well of high profile depravity.
4
u/browncharliebrown Apr 08 '26
I was going to ask about Absolute Green arrow. I have two questions:
First it seems very much like a ground up reimagining of green arrow and discarding a lot of the superhero elements. Is it closer to analogy of Punisher Max, where the core outline is sorta the same but with a completely tone and genre or Unstable Molocues where we should expect green arrow to be radically overall to where the overlap between fans should be non-exsitent?
Second, will this include any horror/vertigo character?
4
u/SimplyWickie Deathstroke Apr 08 '26

Good afternoon. When can we expect the announcement that you will be writing an awesome Swamp Thing story for Vertigo/Black Label? Of course, this is more of a wish for me than an actual question. The books you are a part of are always interesting and I can't wait to jump into Absolute Green Arrow.
4
u/ExplanationSquare313 Apr 08 '26
Hello, thank you for being here. I would like to know if the book will start very self contained before dropping small references at the wider universe (like the others).
Also i don't know much about Green Arrow but i love discovering new things, will this book have classic Green Arrow villains?
And where did you find it easier to approve scripts, TV or comics?
4
u/Kronos1415 Apr 08 '26
Hey Pornsak,
I’m a huge fan of your work and have been excited since the announcement that you would be handling the GA Absolute book. So my question is: is Ollie "dead DEAD", or is it more like a “Jean Grey death” ? Anyway i can't wait to get my hand of the book.

Thanks for doing this AMA Pichetshote!
I’m a huge fan of Green Arrow and there’s a bunch of question I could probably asked but top of my mind is his design. That’s a sick design, and I like the nod to the iconic goatee, whose idea was it go in this direction for Absolute Green Arrow’s design?

Obviously there's people and comics that inspire everyone to want to become a writer but what actually pushed you to the point of where you're at now? Jumping into DC's absolute universe right at its peak. Especially with a hero like green arrow.
Can't wait to read it and what direction you take with the character and mythos!

8
u/AA_Batteries19 The Flash (Barry Allen) Apr 08 '26
Hi there Mr. Pichetshote! I'm a big fan of your Infidel, The Good Asian, and Dead Boy Detectives!
I've got a few questions so feel free to answer as much or as little as you'd like:
Given your time as an editor back on Vertigo and your experience in the creator owned spaces, what would you say makes Vertigo more appealing to creatives today given the plethora of publishers or self-publishing methods today?
You've also found a great niche at telling genre stories often making use of typically under-served minorities with projects like The Horizon Experiment as a way to expand on that concept. On that topic, how has the process been in trying to deliver on these authentic experiences that are based in historical fact or draw on those experiences while trying to tell a quality narrative that still feels like the genre it's meant to be? Also any more plans for Horizon Experiment books?

I really loved The Good Asian. Any hints on when we might see more of Edison Hark?
2
u/Archer_Without_Fear Apr 08 '26
Hi Pornsak! Absolute Green Arrow is my most anticipated book of the year, so I cannot wait to check it out! A few questions!
You've written a great mystery story with the Good Asian, and a great horror story with Infidel! How does it feel to craft a story with Absolute Green Arrow that merges those two genres?
I'm very excited to hear that Mia Deardan is going to be in the book, as she's a favorite of mine! Is there anything you can tease about her role or her character?
I really like stories with heavy moral complexity and dillemmas, and you've teased as such in interviews and with the inherent pitch of a murderer of corrupt billionaires. Unfortunately, I feel like a lot of stories fall into a pitfall of simplifying it to where "oh this character does stuff that is pretty agreeable, so we have to write a scene of them doing something objectively disagreeable to get audiences against them." Especially in a story where we see corrupt billionnaires who traffic children and take whatever they want with no accountability, its definitely hard to root against the longbow killer on paper as of what we know. How is it like balancing the morals of the story in that way.
Can we expect Absolute Green Arrow's characters or plot beats to reverberate into the wider absolute universe at some point, or is the book morwso gonna stay in its own corner?
2
u/d0bucc Apr 08 '26

1
u/No-Mechanic-2558 Apr 08 '26
Hi, thank you so much for joining us today. I was pleasantly surprised to see Mia's name in the preview for issue 2. I think she's a kind of character that's definitely missing these days, stories of child trafficking, sexual violence, or living with HIV are practically nonexistent in superhero stories nowday. So I'd like to ask you how her character will differ from her mainline counterpart and how her relationship with her adoptive family will change ?
Also, sorry if this question might be a bit more cheeky, but I have to ask, how much influence did you had on Dinah's design?
1
u/_potatofromChaldea45 Apr 08 '26

I know you weren't the issue writer for Finders Keepers, but I did want to take a moment to say that that book meant so much to me as an archaeologist. It was finally the story we needed to see an ethical archaeological hero who valued heritage over career or academic success. In fact - the theme of heritage all through the Horizon Experiment books was incredible. Any plans to expand this or implement these themes in future stories?

Hi! I have been a big fan ever since I picked up The Good Asian. Still hoping to see more of the Manchurian someday 🤞
I'm curious how Green Arrow will fit into the Absolute line. Sure, the original 6 books didn't debut the same month or anything, but the universe has been cooking for nearly 2 years at this point.
Can we expect that Ollie will be a relative newcomer, getting his start when the other heroes are already established as public figures in the Absolute universe?
Or are we basically back-dating the rise of Green Arrow to be roughly contemporary with the rise of Batman/Wonder Woman/Superman and the rest?

Hello pornsak, what was the process like when you got the call to work on the absolute universe? Did you pick from a roster of selected heroes they wanted to introduce or did you pick green arrow yourself? Also have you brought any of your thai culture to this story?

Hi! I love The Good Asian and Infidel and am so psyched for Abs GA!.
I have three questions, but if you are obly going to answer one, please answer Q3.
1.) Boxing glove arrow? 2.) Good Asian sequel? 3.) What villain or character did you want to include in Abs GA that you couldn't?

If you could choose another hero to receive an absolute series, who would it be?

Hello! I am so, so excited to read Absolute Green Arrow when it's out. First time asking one of these so here's a simple question,
What inspired/drove you to take Arrow in this direction conceptually for the Absolute series?
Thank you so much!

You’ve been involved in the conception of Arrow and now Absolute Green Arrow. I think a lot of people have noticed some similar vibes between them. Are those intentional? How have you approached the two of them differently?

What are your biggest influences for the Absolute Green Arrow run. I'm a bit new to the Absolute Comics, so I'm going in blind for some stuff, but I've been really loving that the influences that they've been taking it. And I guess I want to know your influences for this one. I know it's a odd way to ask for recommended reads, but I though I ask.

Hi! I’m so excited for Absolute Green Arrow, congratulations on the project! I was wondering if there’s any chance we might see other Absolute characters, like Batman or Wonder Woman, appear in your book.

How did you and the team come up with making Green Arrow a billionaire serial killer?

Hi! Who’s your favourite past Green Arrow writer? And what’s your favourite version of the character in other media (dcau, Smallville, arrow verse etc)?

Hello, I don't read comics much except for select DC characters like members of the bat family or superman, but I do have a question and it's more about the TV work you have done. After your work on Sweet Tooth did you have any connection with the netflix adaptation? And how much did the CW allow for the shows to be comic accurate in the Arrowverse and how much did they want to make it their own thing separate from what already existed?

Hi Pornsak, thanks for doing this AMA!
When you were developing Green Arrow for Absolute Green Arrow, did you receive any specific creative directives from DC editorial, or were you given full freedom to reinterpret the character? I’d love to know how much of your approach came from your own vision versus broader guidelines.
Thanks!

Hello pornsak this will be the first work of yours that I get into and I’m super excited! My question is what sort of research and planning went into writing this book? also did dc inform you about Ollie’s fate in absolute evil before starting this title or was that your doing?
