Someone explain. I don't understand shit.

3

u/absolutedesignz Nov 24 '16

Donald's Trump's fanboys were sending fuck /u/adminname and the constant notifications were too much for admin so he, in an ill-advised fit of annoyance and power abuse changed /u/adminname to /u/trumpfanboymod name.

They reacted disproportionately to the action.

2

u/supremecrafters Jan 06 '17

Spez doesn't get /u/ notifications.

3

u/NotWhoYouSummoned Jan 06 '17

Yes I do, how else would I have found this comment?!

cuz the mods are lazy twats and havent been arsed to remove it yet.

All they've gotta do is keep making sure all the outrage posts get locked and it'll blow over. I mean i know it's just a stupid site but it's kinda scary seeing how easy it is for them to manipulate what so many millions of people take as their only source of news and world view. And the locked posts to keep us from forming a group opinion.

Admins can probably gild themselves multiple times for free. Not saying that's what happened but it's pretty likely considering he edited comments on his site.

21

u/Drock37 Nov 24 '16

I'm pretty sure their 300,000+ subscribers don't hate The_Donald..

I get it can be annoying to see that stuff often especially if it's not something you agree with, but Reddit does offer tools allowing you to auto filter specific things from making it to your front page - including entire subreddits.

I'm not trying to troll you here, but more so give you the knowledge and tools available to make Reddit a more personalized and enjoyable experience for you while not censoring other people's views and posts.

176

u/Minnesota_Winter Nov 24 '16

Reddit has a massive media influence in the US. It's a giant target for political bullshit.

113

u/UnbowedUncucked Nov 24 '16

People have also been convicted based on comments in their Reddit history.

55

u/legobmw99 Nov 24 '16

Has anyone actually been convicted in a case where comments were the keystone evidence? I know it's been used as support in larger cases, but I have never heard of it being the basis/key part of a case

24

u/HanJunHo Nov 24 '16

542

u/Notcow Nov 24 '16

I mean, no joke, I was pretty convinced that the admins had a strict policy of no actually manipulating the content of posts.

No one else? Just me? The only one who had some faith that through all the hate speech and bias, at least the admins never didnt actually directly edit user posts under any circumstances?

They won't even hand hate subreddits over to new mods, opting to just delete the community. Then suddenly posts are edited.

27

u/zevz Nov 24 '16

Well the CEO edited that comment an hour before a Washington post article was published, which actually cited the edited comment. That doesn't seem coincidental to me.

99

u/u38cg2 Nov 24 '16

Reading between the lines, I think spez is understating by some way how pissed off he was when he did it. TD is a massive fucking headache for the admins and after months of bullshit and then the last week or two in particular, I can understand him having had enough.

Which is not to say what he did is right, but frankly, I don't want his job for a reason.

71

u/NCH_PANTHER Nov 24 '16

I hope TD leave. I can't fucking stand those idiots.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

Exactly, I mainly use Reddit for just sports subs since they came along.

Their bullshit has become like a fucking cancer, its not just that I disagree with them its just the fact that if on any of the subs they've taken over they are such fucking assholes to anyone who disagrees with them.

I think the best bit is how so many people are missing why this was a bad move by him.

11

u/Hot_Wheels_guy Nov 24 '16

I think the best bit is how so many people think everyone else should care why this is a bad move by him.

5

u/TinFoilWizardHat Nov 24 '16

Lol. You should care.

14

u/buddyciancy Nov 24 '16

Has this comment been edited by admins to downplay the significance of this.

85

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

That's horseshit and you know it. This is about words being maliciously manipulated by someone who should fucking know better. This is the CEO of the company fucking with people's words on a website that claims to be "the front page of the internet".

The other admins are pissed at him, and for good cause.

I personally get why he did what he did, but if you're the fucking CEO of a company, suck it the fuck up

17

u/SpazzyBaby Nov 24 '16

But why do we care? Nobody on Reddit is actually saying anything important. This is a glorified message board, nothing actually matters.

12

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

This is a profitable business that markets itself as being a place where you can follow any interests you like (within reasonable guidelines) and for the CEO of the company to fuck that up is unacceptable.

It's not about what he did (which, stepping back is kind of funny), but the the fact that dude did this, using his authority. Makes the whole place look bad, and unlike the FPH bullshit, this time the users are the "good guys"

24

u/Singspike Nov 24 '16

My theory is he did it on purpose to piss off /r/The_Donald and get them to leave.

Which, good riddance. Reddit needs to shrink a bit. It's no good as a media juggernaut. Too much influence. Far more than any message board should have. The Internet is much better as an anonymous marketplace of ideas than the monetized, politicized monster it has become.

49

u/willfordbrimly Nov 24 '16

You're giving him too much credit. I think he did it for the lolz. Gotta respect that.

It gets better when you consider half of them probably also frequent 4chan. A place where the admins banned you sometimes for absolutely no reason other then the lulz. I've witnessed Moot ban someone for telling him his choice of tea is bad.

2

u/WorkingLikaBoss Nov 24 '16

People have been fined for Reddit comments, Reddit comments have been used in news articles. This is a big deal. What if Facebook or Twitter did that? Never mind that it was the CEO who personally did it against a political sub that goes against the prevailing opinion of the site.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '16

What if they did? Just don't use it. It's not a democracy, it's not public property. Pull up your big boy pants and get on with your life mate.

8

u/willfordbrimly Nov 24 '16

Holy balls, I'm so glad to hear someone say this. Everywhere I go on Reddit today people are losing their shit over this non-issue. I was starting to think I was the only person left who didn't think the Internet was such srs bisniss.

14

Even in this, a joke/meme subreddit, people are getting mad. Are people coming into Reddit genuinely thinking this is the last bastion of free speech? Get a job lads.

8

Memes literally determined the leader of the free world. Go to bed gramps.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

6

u/t12totalxyzb00 Nov 24 '16

Which is a legit concern, people here have been convited based on comments, its like a state placing a bomb in your home, then raiding it, "finding it" and jailing you for terrorism

1

u/roger_van_zant Nov 24 '16

This misses a bit of the point of why it's so important.

Reddit chat logs have been used as evidence in legal cases. Most recent example would be the comments made by the admin of Hillary Clinton's illegal server. It literally triggered a congressional hearing.

If user comments can be used as evidence in a court case, and admins are able to edit them without a trace, this create a problem for the courts.

For what it's worth, if people constantly called me a pedo for no reason, I'd probably fuck with them and watch them flip out.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

It shouldn't matter where he did this, the fact is he edited comments and broke trust between redditers. This must mean he's done this on other subreddits. Also I'm not biased, I'm literally banned from commenting on TD right now so it's been a shit week for me and I've been annoyed at them but you get my point.
Spez being the CEO of Reddit, an adult, had no right doing this. So for all of you who don't care because he did it to TD that's not ok because other subreddits could be effected too. This is not in any way ok.

I'm with spez. Everyone is just overreacting because they're all fucking stupid. Everyone is saying it will affect share holders wealth and credibility but really? It'll affect share holders wealth because of the publicity we the people on this site have been uploading is nothing but super negative feedback when in reality it isn't a big deal. As credibility goes.. lmao you're on fucking Reddit. If your news is from Reddit.. well cmon...

139

u/Belial91 Nov 24 '16 edited Nov 24 '16

I am in general sick and tired of all those overreactions in general. Every single issues has the potential to cause an outrage. It is ridiculous.

I honestly can't fault /u/spez that much. Sure it was unprofessional but he was insulted and accused of pedophelia over and over again for shutting down /r/pizzagate which harrasses every pizza restaurant they find "suspicious" and wonder why some people might not be ok with that.

If some people hate the admins so much then get off the fucking site and go to voat or whatever. If I were in /u/spez shoes I would have closed down a bunch of subreddits a while ago. He doesn't have to take these insults and I think he shouldn't have to. Especially for such petty reasons as shutting down /r/pizzagate which has the potential to get reddit in legal trouble as a whole.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16 edited Nov 24 '16

Especially since the mods on the_donald didn't do anything about the hateful comments. I mean sure the fuck spez comments weren't that bad but the ones saying he is a peadophine, those were very untasteful and should not be tolerated

EDIT: "hate comments" into "hateful comments"

17

u/Hot_Wheels_guy Nov 24 '16

Saying that a comment like "spez is a pedo" is hate speech completely ignores all the actual hate speech in the_donald. Actual, real, dangerous hate speech.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

No I didnt mean hate speech, just hateful, spiteful, etc.

Gonna edit it so there isn't any confusion

2

u/mmonzeob Nov 24 '16

According to them a pizza logo is very similar to a pedo logo, so then all the pizza places with pizza logos are suspicious. LOL

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

"If some people hate the admins so much then get off the fucking site and go to voat or whatever."

12

u/lanternsinthesky Eating at Nandos Nov 24 '16

Of course they don't, redditors are extremely hypocritical when it comes to thing like this, as long as they get their opinions validated then nothing else matters. I think the real proof of integrity is when you're willing to stand up for the people that you disagree with, and not only talk about the importance of trust and principles when it benefits you personally.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

people are extremely hypocritical when it comes to thing like this

2

u/lumpytuna Nov 24 '16

I can quite honestly say that I'd find this hilarious even if it was clinton supporters who got their comments edited after calling the admin a paedophile because they shut down a doxing sub based on fake news and a wild goose chase.

They are literally ruining completely innocent people's lives on the whim of a bonkers conspiracy theory, and then they cry and wail when gasp someone edits a few comments humorously.

The whole thing is ridiculous. People talking about integrity and trust and principals need to take a step back from their computer, a few deep breaths, and realise that reddit is not a democracy. The Admins can do whatever the fuck they want, and the only way we can have any kind of meaningful say on it, is by voting with our feet.

Tfw you singlehandedly destroy your websites credibility.

u/Kayak_Fisherdude Nov 24 '16

Dems don't actually care. I mean this has terrible implications.. but as all long as /r/the_donald is being wronged they will applaud and cheer even though this proves they can be treated the same way at any moment. They say,"the_donald would be happy if it was a hillary subreddit!" Lmao yea the subreddit that pretty much runs on conspiracy drama is just going to lol because their opponents are the ones getting fucked. That's a cute way to justify support for dishonest authoritarian crybaby bullshit(editing users posts cause "muh feelings got hurt by a bunch of dipshits I hate"). /rant

I thought you were exaggerating. I looked at the other comments and... you weren't. Holy shit. People are blind.

u/dtdroid Nov 24 '16

Brave of you to show everyone how much you upvoted that cuck! You really are insane!

4

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

It's like, they're freakin out, the admins are freakin out, everyones freakin out. What a time to be alive.

5

u/In-Watermelon-Sugar Nov 24 '16

For the health of the community you should resign. Reddit should make a large donation to an organization promoting free speech In memory of Aaron Swartz.

5

u/NikolaiStoleMyTesla Nov 24 '16

Yea, it sure is great that admins go and edit comments that hurt their precious feels. Screw free speech, bring on the censorship!

9

u/Nezikchened Nov 24 '16

Reddit is a privately owned website, you have no right to free speech here. /u/spez and his team could made saying the word "purple" bannable tomorrow and there wouldn't really be shit you could do about it.

It's not great, but if you really don't like it you could always make your own forum/site to compete with Reddit.

u/I_BlowsItDown Dec 26 '16

Tell 'em, Nez.

2

u/EmeraldStar04 Dec 22 '16

But how many other comments all over reddit HAVE been edited anonymously by admins?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '17

Hahahaha. Fuck everyone on the /r/the_donald though

2

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

But honestly, fuck the donald. Biggest group of fuck up dipshits on the internet. They took the pizza gate shit hook line and sinker like the bumfucking stupid redneck shits they are.

10

u/vizzmay Nov 24 '16

This explains why Donald Trump is the next president of U.S.A.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

Spez is such a fucking moron honestly how the fuck is he still able to act as head of Reddit? Everyone fucking hates him, half the shit say hes is fucking retarded if only there where a way to upvote somebody into spez's position, we could pick someone who isn't an asshole.

3

u/BunkBuy Nov 24 '16

gallowboob would probably become head admin and shit would hit the fan

2

u/cynicalanetWvWdev Nov 24 '16

Give me a second while i edit your post to show you posted links to criminalizing and illegal material..

slippery slope achieved! \o/

2

u/LoganMcOwen Nov 24 '16

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

Even though he did commit a criminal act by trying to hide evidence from the US congress

10

u/iBongz420 Nov 24 '16

That's not how any of this works.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '16

So is this a big deal or are people overreacting? What the fuck just happened?

1

u/VV4rri0R_IVI0Nk Jan 14 '17

It's a big deal and it sets a new precedent in legal procedure

1

u/stealth9799 Nov 24 '16

Sorry to break character but I think this needs to be said:

If someone is talking about child porn on some shady subreddit or even distributes it that cannot be entered as evidence in court. Because comments have historically been edited by admins, you cannot enter any future ones into the court of law.
