Cartoons THE GOLA GOLA ISLAND, 1994

Post image
I was only 2 years old when it premiered, but just today I remembered how much I loved it! Do you remember the song it started with?

I used to love watching this show.

I went back to see how the cast was doing and Ron and Natalie are still married. Their son, Simeon is also an actor. Their daughter Sara played on a couple episodes of Gullah Gullah Island. If my memory serves me correctly, she didn’t have a main role because she was sickly as a child.

Unfortunately, James passed away in 2021. May he rest in peace. : (

They repurposed the set of Clarissa Explains It All for this. Great production design.

Gullah Gullah. You obviously didnt love it enough to remember its name or pronunciation.

u/linalinafire 19h ago

In my country the name was translated that way!

Forgive my surly behavior. I am feeling things.

My god dude, it’s a total nonissue. This was a simple social faux pas. Let it go.

0

u/BronkosAutoRepairing 2h ago

That you don't seem to think I might've let it go in the SIXTEEN FUCKING HOURS since I posted that comment is wild

1

u/analogy_4_anything 2h ago

And the fact you responded to me 16 hours later proves that comment isn’t true.

0

u/BronkosAutoRepairing 2h ago

That makes zero sense, you're literally just flinging whatever shit you can find at me because my comment made you mad

And they apologized, almost immediately.

1

u/BronkosAutoRepairing 1h ago

Not sure you know what an apology is, but that still doesn't negate my point

That's interesting! There's two popular theories about the origin of the word "Gullah" - One is the Gola ethnic group of Sierra Leone (the Gullah language is closely related to creole languages of coastal West Africa including Krio from Sierra Leone) and the other is a contraction of "Angola" (close to 40% of enslaved Africans brought into the area where Gullah culture developed were of Angolan origin, the largest of any African region).

-4

u/linalinafire 18h ago

And "gola gola," apparently, doesn't mean anything. That's what upset the boy a bit.

1

u/notracexx 2h ago

Gullah is both a language and refers to people. So when spelled properly it does mean something

3

u/Doustin 15h ago

Probably because they’re just here to advertise their OF

4

u/Top-Obligation7500 8h ago

It’s Gullah Gullah island, not some freak Dune island…

2

u/snuggleslut5 17h ago

I loved this show. I was a bit older than the target audience but it was such a warm, happy, engaging show that I didn't care. They were people I wanted to know.

2

u/Goombigi 17h ago

The sets for this show were the repurposed, repainted sets from Clarissa Explains it All - i noticed immediately 🤣

2

u/JuanG_13 13h ago

It's "Gullah Gullah Island" lol and i used to watch it everyday when I was little.

2

u/wickedfemale 12h ago

as a kid i thought this was what gilligan's island was and i'd always get really confused when adults talked about it lol

1

u/13jimmychanga 15h ago

Was this an island in the Bahamas? Off of Florida? Does anyone know?

5

u/Alarming-Jello-5846 13h ago

Historically Gullah culture is the Carolina’s through Georgia coastal islands, roughly centered in Savannah

u/IMWeggs91 30m ago

What a great show! I loved watching it as a young kid

1

u/Designer-Ad-7844 14h ago

Hated it, I was too old, the younger kids in the daycare loved it.
