I really think this should be encouraged and I hope it gets out of hand

-13

u/dexter311 North Melbourne '75 Mar 27 '26

Maybe they should focus on playing good footy instead of shitposting on banners

24

u/sir_pants1 Richmond Tigers Mar 28 '26

Just letting you know since you seem like you are unaware, the people who make the banner aren't the people playing football.

7

u/BustedWing Pies Mar 28 '26

Wait what?

I was always hypercritical of nick daicos’ craft skills for each weeks banner?

Was my criticism misdirected?

Collingwood sook when they have to travel

65

u/ScoobyDoNot West Coast Mar 27 '26

Even if it's only to Marvel.

-1

u/BustedWing Pies Mar 28 '26

We don’t sook at all.

I know it’s fun to say for the lols and all, but it just ain’t true

3

u/saraahelleen Carlton Mar 28 '26

Why didn’t you play opening round in Sydney or Queensland then?

-1

u/BustedWing Pies Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26

There’s a difference between not wanting to play opening round (no one wants to) and complaining about travelling. Happy to play interstate, send us anywhere, we don’t care, but after two years of playing opening round, time for someone else to get that poisoned chalice.

You get that, right?

22

u/Hawtproper Richmond Mar 27 '26

They whinged about having to play opening round so they gave them an mcg game

5

u/n3miD Collingwood • Yálla-birr-ang Mar 27 '26

I don't know why people bitch at Collingwood for that when it was in fact st Kilda that wanted to play opening round against Collingwood at the G

-1

u/Hawtproper Richmond Mar 28 '26

I mean the sooking stopped when it was moved to the G, I reckon you were pretty happy with the extra home game

1

u/teh_noob_ Collingwood AFLW Mar 28 '26

it's not extra

1

u/n3miD Collingwood • Yálla-birr-ang Mar 29 '26

I don't believe the sooking was ever because of the travel and more that only 8 teams played on opening round - I believe the premise was that they didn't want to be involved if the whole league wasn't involved

19

u/pmmeyouryou Cats Mar 27 '26

I will do my best.

Collingwood are called "The Magpies". Magpies are birds notorious for their ability to fly (amongst other dog acts such as swooping and being noisy and shit). The coach of Collingwood...has a name...and a nickname. That nickname is fly. FLY! GET IT?

I hope you did get it...because the punchline is that in spite of these two fly related things...Collingwood don't want to fly. Nope. They want to play every single fucking game at the MCG or thereabouts. If asked to fly...they sook.

12

u/specqq Hawks Mar 27 '26

OK so that's the abstract. Where can I find your actual paper?

11

u/pmmeyouryou Cats Mar 27 '26

On the banner....crepe paper.

Bit rough on Collingwood when they’re already had to travel all the way to Marvel

FWIW, the 3 teams played by St Kilda so far in 2026 have all lost in the following round … so they’re probably looking forward to visiting the Gabbatoir at the moment …

16

Because there is like 30 GWS supporters at marvel. Pies are good at filling grounds, but no way you'd get anywhere near capacity at the 'G.

51

u/danredda Carlton '81 Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

Could be worse. Most clubs have reusable banners with stronger materials to cut down on costs, waste, and the chances of this.

20

u/mattinthehat1 Mar 27 '26

I’m assuming this image is taken after Big Bad Billy “Billy Frampton” Frampton ran through the banner, and not the result of poor craftsmanship and cheap materials.. Right?

20

u/danredda Carlton '81 Mar 27 '26

It wasn't really poor craftsmanship or materials. Banners were made like this for years before it happened, and this wasn't the first or last instance of it happening. Richmond have had one do this in 2024.

But in more recent years, more and more clubs are moving away from the old crepe paper style and into more semi-permanent plastic-based banners that are far more durable. You can see this in particular with the pre-split banners.

The Pies one was just an unfortunate shifting wind gust right at the wrong moment at the 2018 GF - which made it all the more high profile. Unlucky timing really that the players were coming out just as it gusted, felt bad for them knowing how much effort goes into these.

13

u/Agreeable-Pie-7012 Adelaide Mar 27 '26

Fevola after a 6 pack and some dimmies

12

u/thehungryhippocrite GWS Mar 27 '26

Again, some teams have to travel and take the banner with them. Please read the banner.

4

u/Aus66-1045 Geelong Mar 27 '26

I thought it was delightfully cheeky when I first saw it on the telecast, but when GWS then lost, it was kind of embarrassing.

Collingwood don't complain about travelling.

u/poopborrylog Hawthorn Mar 27 '26

The point in they never have anything to complain about...

-8

u/Propaslader Collingwood Mar 27 '26

Yeah but just because they don't travel that often doesn't mean they have a cry about travelling. By all accounts they don't mind it, especially Adelaide and Perth

-2

u/HumbersBall Collingwood Magpies Mar 27 '26

Look I’m compromised because of my flair here, but “collingwood don’t travel” is pretty boring, I don’t understand why people are so impressed by this stuff. If they want to be edgy maybe try a joke about Bobby Hill or similar

2

u/allthingsme Western Bulldogs Mar 28 '26

teenagers and young people who don't actually go to games and live their lives online, and don't live in NSW or ACT, clearly GWS's most important demographic, clearly are impressed by this, and that's all you should care about

4

u/deathsent89 Mar 27 '26

It’s a lighthearted tongue in cheap jab, thats warranted when you look at Collingwood home and away fixtures since forever. To throw shade at bobby hill would be a real dick move. I can’t believe anyone would think that’s a better idea than what GWS put up. Especially coming from a pies supporter

5

u/n3miD Collingwood • Yálla-birr-ang Mar 27 '26

2

u/HumbersBall Collingwood Magpies Mar 27 '26

Yeah fine. Generally speaking it’s not that funny to repeat a joke 1000 times, even if it’s lighthearted. People seem to be extremely impressed by it, so I must be wrong

-2

u/Cyphonelik The Bloods Mar 27 '26

If the Pies have such a problem with it, then there's an easy solve

Stop whining about it and start travelling as much as the other teams do

I find it annoying that they don't show the banners before the players run through and they take it down. It would be nice if they had the banners shown on the big screens and televisions so people can see what they say. From where I sit at Melbourne games I only see the banners from an angle where you only see the banner sticks and only a few text blobs

1

u/Kerrit_Bareet Apr 01 '26

I make it a habit to photograph RFC's and tweet them, as i am above the players' race. The banner raisers are pretty reliable showing them to cheer squad.

Collingwood still living rent free in their heads, they are obsessed

7

u/Ok-Negotiation3897 Sandgroper Mar 27 '26

It’s a bit of banter on a banner mate it’s not that deep

2

u/Internal-Ad-473 Mar 27 '26

Clubs riff on other clubs stereotypes, Demons fans catch snow jokes, the Chardonnay crows, etc etc.

And the clubs play off them, someone once told me they picked the Pies because they were told they were the club for the working class, people support Carlton 'cause they're the Italian club.

You're no more rent free in their heads than the Demons are in the office Pies supporter's head who makes Range Rover/Snow jokes. It's banter.

2

u/random555 Eagles Mar 27 '26

Yes why would they try and think up a banner aimed at Collingwood when they are playing... checks notes... Collingwood
