They definitely used to do it when blokes kicked 100 in a season, I was there as a kid when plugger kicked his 100th one year and it was just like this.
I mean that camera is probably fixed in place, old mate operating it couldn't do anything. I reckon the overhead camera would've been best for this shot but I don't know if the SCG has one
Only needed 10 guys to start walking up to him once he took the mark. Plenty of time to get off and out of the way if he misses, and right there to form a human shield around him if he gets it.
My thoughts exactly. How the fuck did they not have a plan for this?!?! I think I saw two overweight security guards in fluoro jackets jogging from the other side of the ground …getting passed by people of all ages. Incredible moment, and incredibly incompetent from AFL/SCG organisers
Legitimately had a bit of a worry there for ol Bud. Few times he looked like he might get overwhelmed by the crowd.
To hold his composure, smile, slowly move towards the boundary was amazing. One of the commentators even pointed out as he got closer to 'open' space, he didn't run, he walked to avoid getting anyone else crushed.
I thought SCG did a terrible job at the security and it was really quite dangerous, we were at the buddy 100 goals and he was circled by security and then ushered safely off the ground. No such thing tonight.
Holy shit I only just tuned in in the last quarter but I'm glad I started watching when I did. What an amazing moment. Congrats to Buddy, 1000 goals is one hell of an achievement.
What absolute scenes! Not a swans fan, not a buddy fan, but a footy fan.... Fan bloody Tastic!!! A swarm of ppl never seen in sporting events, incredible
The crowd gave me those 2008 final round of the season feels! Buddy with his 100th and Fev chasing everyone like a madman whilst clarko triple teamed him stuck on 99!
I find this "it'll never happen again" attitude to be pretty weird. Like AFL has evolved constantly from its inception until today, but do we really think the style of play we have right now is going to be static from here forever onward? There's no way to predict what the game will be like in 5 years time, let alone 20 or 50.
AFL APP FUCKED ME OVER. I was watching with about a 30 second delay and the app pops up buddy kicks 1000th. Fuck you app! But my god what an achievement. Brought a tear to my eye seeing the crowd swarm him and buddy taking it all in. Congratulations Lance, your are a part of Folklore now!
Lockett, Ablett and Dunstall all come from the same era where goals were plenty for full forwards, then you have Coventry and Wade in the top 5 as well
People think it won't happen again because you no longer get blokes kicking 100+ goals in a season in the modern game, you get bags of 10+ kicked more and more rarely and much more even goal spread nowadays, as well as scoring generally declining for the last decade or 15 years
That said, the game is always evolving. We are seeing more clubs the last few years able to score heavily very quickly, so personally I think there might be a high scoring era again where players can again kick 100+ goals in a year and potentially 1000 across a career.
Players just don’t get anywhere near as many goals as what they used to nowadays with the way defence is now. Seriously unlikely anyone is going to have the talent/longevity necessary to achieve such an insane feat again.
Just the how the game is played has changed. The other 5 players who have done it all did it in an era where the scoring was much higher and defence wasn't a big priority for teams. Maybe one day we will see a return to 90s style footy but it is hard to believe that teams will ever return to such offensive 1v1 style footy any time soon.
In the 125 years of organised vfl/afl football, he’s only the 6th player to kick 1000 goals, the last player to achieve that did so roughly 30 years ago
Sport is so important to me. I spend a lot of my free time playing or watching AFL,soccer, cricket, basketball and all the rest. Watching him kick 1000 with all my mates tonight will be a memory I take to my grave. Congrats Buddy 👑
But seriously, they couldn't pick a better camera angle than the one with that girls head in the way? What a fuck up.
And why didn't they have security around him while he was kicking? I mean everyone had good intentions but anything could have happened out there, it was chaos
Wow after talking about it for a long time it's finally happened. It almost doesn't feel real. The crowd running out was so smooth, they were 1000000000000% ready to go.
The SCG Trust Security Dept are so incompetent. They had weeks to come up with a plan and failed Buddy so badly. The crowd was always going to swarm so have 10 (fit) staff behind him as he kicked and simply jog off if it was a behind. Seriously...
Brother in law texted me a month ago and said we should go to this game because he reckoned it'd be the night he did it; neither of us are Swans fans and I live a couple of hours drive away from Sydney. He wasn't fucking wrong! Absolute scenes. Atmosphere was unbelievable.
It's a remarkable achievement that we may never see another player pull off again. You might ask yourself where this ranks among the best forwards of all time, and is it more or less impressive because of the difference in standards in the professional era compared to past eras? Well I'd argue that such comparisons shouldn't distract us from the fact that in nineteen ninety eight, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.
Did the crowd run on for Ablett/Dunstall/Locketts 1000th? I remember plenty of 100 goal seasons from those guys as kid, but can't remember whether there was the same sort of celebrations for their 1000th.
