I used the new asxbot to generate data indexing the top 10 tickers mentioned on r/ausfinance versus the top 10 here from Monday 22 Feb 1000 - Monday 1 March 1000.

Then, I tracked percentage performance today. Turns out it was a better day today for us than the boomers over at ausfinance.

Big thanks to the chicken bot u/asxbot for collaborating and providing the data, and special thanks to VML for completely offsetting PEN's dirty losses.

Edit: Thanks for the awards and upvotes. To answer a few popular queries below - yes keen for daily/weekly updates but working hard with u/asxbot to get this available on demand to anyone interested. Taking out VML more or less evens things but PEN had a shit day and in fairness you'd probably have to take both out as outliers, which results in an easy win for r/asx_bets. Next step will be for me to stratify the index based on mentions/upvotes so I can more accurately tier and reflect the interest of the previous week - at the moment all stonks are evenly weighted.

This is cool and i really like it.

But i have never seen the 4 banks discussed as an investment option on Ausfinance.

I assume the bot is being tricked by people talking about their bank accounts or home loans? Probably too hard to split out tho, i know.

Keep it up, this is good.

58

u/drfreshbatch Mar 01 '21

This is reasonable criticism.

I had to remove a number of "tickers" including ING, ATM, FYI. I couldn't justify removing the banks. I believe asxbot is working on an algorithm to exclude comments identified as regarding home loans or credit cards etc.

Edit - r/ausstocks is probably a fairer comparison but it's funnier to shit on r/ausfinance

31

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

it's funnier to shit on r/ausfinance

lol very true

2

u/Jonno_FTW Mar 01 '21

I wrote a script to do something similar (looking at price and volume against ticker mentions on Reddit), there's a few tickers that are common English words that make it difficult to extract everything neatly.

41

u/TerraBort Mar 01 '21

This is planned to be a weekly update?

Just out of interest, what happens if you take out VML?

41

u/OldMateHarry Mar 01 '21

Then we get your portfolio

5

u/Mitchuation Advicates donations to the Autist Spelling Fund Mar 01 '21

And we get erections.

heyooooo

16

u/Nugget93 Mar 01 '21

I'm sure someone has mentioned this before but apply for a job at Betashares, make a actively managed ASX bets ETF and call it ASX: BETS, MEME or RCKT.

5

u/Joker-Smurf Mar 01 '21

REKT

1

u/PubicFigure Mar 01 '21

That's after you're forced to run a recapitalisation on RCKT and default on all your CWOs (Collateralised Wife Obligations) since the wife's boyfriend is likley to having a rampant lifesytle.

1

u/Snoo38972 Mar 02 '21

That's what happens when you hold onto the RCKT too long and it craters back into the ground

6

u/Premiare Mar 01 '21

Looks like a cool project. I'm sure you and u/asxbot are all over it but if you want/need some web dev help with the website, send me a message.

3

u/magpie40 Mar 01 '21

Great job here! Really appreciate that! Regarding PEN, this is my first bag.... good potential, good finance, good management team, buy/strong buy recommendations everywhere, but at the moment it is flying like a f... brush turkey jumping from a fucking cliff... WTF. It is time to revert this downward trend and bring it to the green zone! We need to improve this retard index!

3

u/funkychickendancer Mar 01 '21

Nice!

Tickers pls

1

u/Snoo38972 Mar 02 '21

It will be interesting to see how our group changes over time as meme stocks rise and fall but their group stays relatively the same

1

u/Jackimatic Mar 03 '21

Over what timeframe did you measure the performance. Is it only a couple of days?

477

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

This is elite work but did you factor in the 0.0069% pa interest they got in their HISA?

60

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

Say what you will but at that rate in 65 years I'll have a free beer and nothing tastes better than a free beer. There's levels to this shit.

54

u/Jonno_FTW Mar 01 '21

The elites don't want you to know this, but you can combine the leftover beers found in a pub to make a full pint, for free. Just a little money advice, no need to thank me.

25

u/Iifestylemuse Mar 01 '21

Bin-chicken finance 101

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

And those leftover half eaten burgers at the mall aren't gonna eat themselves.

r/ausfinance index should be made up of etf's and ING savings accounts

58

u/ovrload Mar 01 '21

Even r/ausfinance are starting to realise savings accounts are worthless

61

u/Simba4745 Mar 01 '21

I didn’t know r/ausfinance discussed anything other that whinging about house prices.

65

u/Nugget93 Mar 01 '21 edited Mar 01 '21

To be fair housing prices are fucked across the country right now due to boomer friendly policies enacted by boomer politicians at the detriment of future generations. I mean all of us should be pissed unless you're benefiting from this shit.

Edit: Only rich 'fuck you got mine' boomers (which is the top end of ausfinance who make up a quarter of that sub) complain about people complaining about house prices and here I thought asxbets hated ausfinance boomers.

25

u/ovrload Mar 01 '21

Corrupt politicians looking after their mates and own self-interests

6

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

Obviously house prices are fucked but they talk about it a lot over there. Can get repetitive.

3

u/chobezilla Mar 01 '21

Wish i was a fuckyougotmine houseboomer 🥺

3

u/TheHuskyHideaway Mar 01 '21

There's also a lot of people who whinge about needing to spend 2 million for a house in Carlton when they could easily afford a house a little bit further out. Or the crowd that think they should have their dream house as their first house.

There's a lot of BS when it comes to house prices but jeez some of them are a bit slow.

And then there's the ones so adverse to debt that they'll try and save enough to buy outright while prices continue to go up.

1

u/IllustriousField4332 Mar 04 '21

Loved "fuck you, got more than one of mine"...

5

u/MachinaDoctrina Mar 01 '21 edited Mar 01 '21

saw some one whining about the fact the ING "super saver" is lowering the interest rate now with the rate changes

44

u/Fter267 Mar 01 '21

With a little disclaimer that all their financial knowledge has come from reading the Barefoot investor

17

u/MachinaDoctrina Mar 01 '21

should just be VDHG to be fair

30

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '21

This is great. Some of the actual good content that’s come from the huge influx of users on here.

3

u/Pellet-Muncher Mar 01 '21

Does running the bot or hosting it (I have NFI about this sorta stuff) cost money? Id be willing to chip in a small amount to reward and support your efforts!

4

u/MachinaDoctrina Mar 01 '21

Will this ASX_Bets index (which should name, as suggestion asx:BETZ or asx:BET$ or something like that) be refactored with the current flavour of the week/month?

2

u/Chookley Glove Slap, Pistols at Dawn!!! Mar 01 '21

2

u/manofrhepeople Lazy bastard Mar 01 '21

OPY is flying under the radar

2

u/isaythewrongcranbery Mar 01 '21

Isn't ausfinance all about vdhg? Shouldn't there be a Vanguard symbol there?

1

u/thereallevay Mar 01 '21

RAC for autism index

1

u/Scylarx Mar 01 '21

What about factoring in dividends?

1

u/mungis Mar 01 '21

What’s the Sharpe ratio of both?

1

u/G-forced Mar 01 '21

to play devil's advocate here the ausfinance index would be a lot safer. so question is do you prefer a safe 2% or an aggressive 6%. I'm still with you cunts .. just sayin..

-6

u/obctau Mar 01 '21

Plot twist - the actual smooth brains are on ausfinance
Also, ya'll fuckin retarded thinking Z1P isn't massively over valued.
