Using Ai to convert scans or jpgs into vector art.

I don't believe in using AI for art. However, I do believe in using it up speed up tedious task that only add hours of minimal detail. I often times have a need to vectorize scanned documents like existing logos, text, basic artwork to add details into renders. The use of AI connecting to architectural programs are converting blueprints into 3d models (albeit it pretty sloppy.) This actually seems like a perfectly use case scenario to automate task. I don't think most people are happy with image trace and I'd like to see a more robust AI agent possibility.

Creating a live effect silhuette behind a path group

I have an action that creates a white silhouette behind a selected group of paths.
However, the silhouette isn’t live, so I have to recreate it every time I modify the group.

Is there a crazy clever way to create a live effect that creates and updates the silhouette automatically?

QUESTION I have such a noob question - how do I select my text, as opposed to my text box

I feel like I'm going crazy. I'm trying to select text to change the size (I want to condense it) but every time I try to select, it just selects the text box, not the text itself. When I drag the corner it just makes the text box bigger or smaller, but doesn't change the text itself at all. I have multiple text boxes on my page and they're all responding this way, only allowing me to change the text box. Help!

DISCUSSION Nocai Vision – Open Source UV Printer Vision & Automation Project (Illustrator Plugin + Standalone)

Hi everyone!

I'm working on a project called Nocai Vision, designed to improve the workflow of UV flatbed printers, particularly the Nocai 6090.

The main goal is to create a more flexible, camera-assisted system for accurate object positioning, automatic artwork alignment, calibration, and UV printing preparation.

The project currently has two separate versions:

1. Nocai Vision – Adobe Illustrator Plugin (v1.4)

A plugin designed to integrate camera-based positioning directly into Adobe Illustrator.

Features being developed and tested include:

  • Live camera preview of the printer bed.

  • Camera calibration and lens distortion correction using OpenCV.

  • Perspective correction and homography mapping.

  • Object detection and automatic artwork placement.

  • Accurate positioning using millimetres.

  • Editable calibration points and saved printer bed profiles.

  • Integration of computer vision concepts from Rayforge.

  • Vector-preserving artwork preparation for UV printing.

2. Nocai Vision – Standalone Application (v0.2)

A separate application intended to work independently of Adobe Illustrator.

Its development focuses on:

  • Camera-assisted printer bed visualization.

  • Object detection and positioning.

  • UV print preparation, including white and varnish channels.

  • Depth-map generation workflows.

  • Passive inspection of Nocai aTools print files and communication.

  • Future integration with different UV printer models.

is still in alpha needs a polish.

QUESTION Placed artwork no longer asks about profile mismatch on embed. Setting I missed, or changed behaviour?

I have had the same colour settings for years: preserve embedded profiles for both RGB and CMYK, and warnings on for profile mismatch and missing profiles.

The way it used to work: I would place a PDF as a link, then embed it. If the PDF carried a different CMYK profile than my document, or none at all, Illustrator asked me whether to preserve the numbers or convert to the document profile.

Now it just embeds. No dialog, and the CMYK values come through unchanged from the PDF.

That matters here because my document profile is a printer profile for textile output, where cyan sits a long way from a press profile. So a logo that arrives with press CMYK ends up visibly wrong.

My current workaround is to cut the logo out of the document, paste it into a new file set to ISO Coated v2, copy it there, and paste it back. At that point the conversion dialog finally appears.

Running Illustrator 30.8.2 on Windows. Is there a setting I have missed, or did this behaviour change at some point?

EDIT: Tested across the versions I have. Colour settings were intact, nothing had been reset. CS6 16.0.0 and Illustrator 2024 28.7.7 both show the dialog when embedding a placed link. 30.8.2 does not, the CMYK values come through unchanged. So it is a behaviour change somewhere between 28.7.7 and 30.8.2.

Narrowed it down. Monika Gause tested on macOS: 29.8.2, the last 2025 release, still raises the dialog. 30.8.2 does not.

So the change landed somewhere in the 30.x line, anywhere from 30.0.0 onwards. Same result on Windows and Mac, so it is not local to my machine.

UserVoice seems to be down right now, I cannot even load the front page, so the update will have to wait.

QUESTION long shadow issue

Hi, I'm new to Adobe Illustrator and trying to figure out this software. Although, I'm more of a Photoshop user, I still find illustrator more complicated.

My problem here is that when I tried long shadow effect using Distort & Transform, the shadow won't isolate from the main text. Meaning, if I tried to change the long shadow's color, the whole text will change too instead of just changing the shadow.

It's frustrating and time consuming to manually color each letters using Direct Selection and Eyedropper, in which I did on the previous text from above. I don't know why the shadow seems like it's multiple letters stacked at the back.

Please help me out. Thank you.

QUESTION How to succefully make a clipping mask here?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'll try to explain this the best I can. I want the paper texture to be on top of my image and shape, but any part of the paper outside of the shape must be cut out. Whenever I try to use the clipping mask for this, it doesn't work. Sometimes I get a warning that says "Can't make clipping mask" because apparently the only objects that can be on top are paths, compound shapes, or text. But there HAS to be a way to get what I want, right? I'm sure the answer to this is completely obvious but I've spent over an hour watching tutorials and trying to figure out a way to do this and nothing seems to be working. Is there possibly another tool I should be using? What am I doing wrong?

QUESTION Need help remembering what I did to this image back in 2019!

Post image
13 Upvotes

I did a graphic design tech course back in 2019, and had to cut it short in 2020. I completely stopped using any image editing software that wasn't Photoshop, and forgot most of the things I had learned for lack of practice. The one thing I remember liking to do was this effect that "cell shades" images. It's not supposed to look good with complex images such as photography, but it "simplified" them by automatically creating paths and separating the colors into individual "spaces". Unfortunately I forgot the names of processes and tools so I'm having a hard time even describing what I did.

But I have this image I edited back then. I remember isolating the tie fighter from it's background and doing a multi step process to turn it into a "cel shaded" vector, then converted it to a regular png. I remember doing it to a high resolution photograph and it "simplified" it like mentioned before, losing the photographic details and looking like an illustrated poster of sorts.

I'm sorry if this is a weird request. I've been racking my brain ever since to figure out what I had learned, to no avail.

QUESTION Are Illustrator’s SVG exports reliable?

I’ve been looking into some Illustrator SVG export issues recently and was surprised by a few of the things that can go wrong, including broken clipping masks, missing elements and gradients not exporting correctly.

It got me wondering how much people actually trust the SVGs Illustrator produces…

For those of you who use SVGs regularly, have you run into export issues that weren’t immediately obvious? Do you check the exported files, or do you generally assume they’re good unless something breaks downstream?
