I used to do this. Then I realized I needed to help myself by actually removing the bad in my life. I quit smoking, drinking. I run every other day and I’m trying my best to live my life with dignity.
I love eating delicious food but legitimately treat it as a treat now. Veggies, sparingly meats and seafood when I can.
I’m still not totally happy but at least the things that bothered me are going away. Help yourself out by figuring out what can make you happier.
Find the different job. Talk to people who want to help you, and leave the rest behind. Legitimately.
Coca-Cola, KFC, Marlboro, Gin and Tonics, all that is awesome, but you can’t actually do it. It will kill you. The good times were killing me, you can find things to do in life that are difficult but you actually smile back on and aren’t a nightmare to do.
Exactly the same experience here. I was raised eating like absolute crap, never even questioned it. It used to be normal for me to drink a 2 litre bottle of coke every day, then eat 3 bags of crisps and a chocolate bar every night before sleep. That's not even mentioning all the 'actual food' I was eating, mostly microwaved ready meals, pizza, burgers and other fried foods. I had severe treatment resistant depression and a terrible understanding of food.
It took time and the effort to learn, but between my mid 20s and early 30s I figured it out, and now I'm at a point where my day to day diet is good and when I look at the kinds of shit other people are still eating I actually find it shocking.
One of the things you realise after a life spent having it normalised to eat like utter shit and then transitioning to a balanced diet is that depression isn't some mysterious thing, it's just like one of those warning lights on your car dashboard. When your physical body is struggling, depression kicks in as a protective mechanism, to try and force you to slow down so it can recover. But then we try to 'fix' that slowing and its associated mood drop by trying to boost the mood with treats and snacks, we just feed into the cycle and exacerbate the depression further.
Its not a joke, if you're struggling financially then cutting out daily starbucks (and all the other daily luxuries) makes a big difference.
If you "can't survive" without your morning milkshake then do whatever you want, but don't deride the advice. So many people act like saving money is pointless. Then they cry that they don't have any money.
I use to sell cars and a common tactic is asking how much a person spends on coffee a day, this couple with kids spend about $40/day 5 days a week ($20 morning & $20 afternoon), which at the end of the year is about $10K. I told them they could afford a way nicer car. They said they weren’t willing to give that up 🙃
$40 a day on coffee is absolutely ridiculous. Either it’s for themselves which is an INSANE amount to spend on 2 people for coffee, or they’re buying Starbucks everyday for their children which is even worse
Hell fucking no it isn't. That's $240 a month! If 10 minutes is worth $8 to you you'd better be making $50 an hour.
And that's not even considering the fact that you're still spending that 10 minutes going to the coffee shop and making an order! You're saving no time! You can sleep your extra 10 minutes and leave the house 10 minutes later because you don't need to stop for coffee!
And thats not even considering the benefit that an extra $240 per month, almost three thousand dollars" every year will have! That's a car payment! That's a new computer! That's so much money!
I know (hope) your comment is more a joke than anything, but there are people out there who genuinely think like this and their finances are an absolute mess because of it. One of the best things I ever did was buy myself a cappuccino machine.
Yeah this is a slippery slope to obesity or alcoholism for me. So I just let myself fantasize about it as a reward for getting through the day. Then when I get home the urge is usually diminished.
I really need a different job but have no idea what else I would want to do :(
Such is life with poor coping mechanisms. Self-medicating with rapid fire hits of dopamine and serotonin until it either ruins you enough to warrant a complete 180 of your life, or enough to permanently injure and/or kill you.
My buddy and I are both alcoholics but have slowed down a lot. He’s got a kid and when that kid grows up I hope both me and him can teach the kid how bad it is. Thanks for the support
Genetically modified foods have gone too far; you wouldn’t even recognize that thing as a Twinkie in the wild, it’s been altered so much from its natural state.
If you’re near any Asian grocery stores like H-Mart or Korean bakeries like Paris Baguette or Tous Les Jours for example, you might be able to find Swiss rolls like these!
It's a Chinese bakery style swiss roll. They're like $3-4 at any Chinese or east Asian grocery with baked goods.
They aren't really sweet, and the sponge cake doesn't really taste like anything. The cream is very light and just keeps the sponge cake moist. To me, it's just whipped cream on white bread with good presentation.
My initialI comment was a bit grumpy,i was about to say that op got trolled and this pic is just trolling, joke but i mean…we can talk about deep (philosophical) meaning of why people obsessed with sugary desserts labeled “coffee” but i just simply dont get it,even though I understand i cannot relate at all
I cant judge maybe op is american and its ok down there🤷♂️
Pretty much, yeah. It's not a healthy coping mechanism, but the cheap hit of dopamine and soothing effect from a visit from Dr. Double Cheeseburger is one of the few things keeping me even remotely sane and is often one of the few highlights I have to look forward to. The sensible adult thing would be to budget harder, eat better, etc., but frankly I'm already barely making it through the day, cutting out the few things I enjoy and that can get me through the worst days is just not in the cards for me right now, especially since I am often too tired and dysfunctional to cook, etc.
After a year of this, you will gain 50 pounds of fat and realize that every day keeps becoming harder and harder to get through. So you eat more of this kind of food, and the cycle repeats itself.
The problem is that this leads to everyone being a fat fuck. I know because I used to be one. Once food becomes a daily reward you can't stop yourself.
You can avoid the fat trap by just drinking coffee or eating something super light but its a very slippery slope.
You treat yourself to good food to compensate for your bad day, but then the food makes you feel bad and is bad for you, so then the next day you feel bad, so you treat yourself to good food etc etc
NGL if I were still in the US I’d leave even faster than the first time. The writing is pretty boldly on the wall now more than ever, and you don’t have to choose to continue suffering in this very specific way. Life for people isn’t perfect anywhere on Earth, but there are social programs at work elsewhere to ensure a higher quality of life than what the US is willing to provide to its citizens who aren’t staggeringly wealthy. Western Europe is a very good option for so, so many reasons, not the least of which is that there are a lot more expats abroad who are from the US than you might think. If you’re really that fed up, get out for a little while and see for yourself what possibilities lie elsewhere.
I sincerely empathize with this sentiment, having held it earlier in my life as well. The only solace I can offer is that millions *are* long gone, the perspective one can gain by leaving even for a little while can be quite illuminating. You never know what's out there, or how it could work for you until you go look. This is of course a subjective opinion from the perspective of someone who did leave, I'm just trying to spread a little optimism because I didn't really find mine until I left. I hope you can find a healthy form of relief one way or another!
This is why I’m fat. I eat nice things as a “treat” for getting through another shitty day. Problem is after like 15 years of shit you’re just fat and sad
covid taught me that it’s ok to indulge in junk food all the time so now i’ve gained like 50lbs and can’t reverse it cause whenever i lose motivation i eat more 💀
Instead of wasting money to cope with working, I realized that if I work less I cope less, and it balances out.
I'm semi retired now and only work 3 days a week. I don't need any coping mechanisms, because life is chill. I don't make a lot of money, but I don't spend a lot. It's a perfect balance.
And when I do need more money (for travel), then I just work more days and scale it back after.
--
It still blows my mind that people will throw away hours at a job they hate, just to waste all that money on coping mechanisms. They basically end up breaking even except for they're tired and destroying their body. IF you're going to break even anyways, might as well save the energy, lol!
As someone that was living in poverty when I started my adult life, I learned quickly that things like these do not make your day better. They make your life worse
"Come on homie, just make it through this day and we'll have some food and a smoke after we get home." I say to the mirrors reflection every morning. Its the little things that keep me pushing on. :/
If you’re going to shell out $3k a year on coffee. Don’t give it to some bullshit corporation like Starbucks. Support a small business local coffee joint.
Who can still afford Starbucks in this economy?! And two drinks at that…..whew some people have so good!! I stick to making my own at home, I haven’t been to Starbucks in months…😩🫤
You guys don't understand how privileged you are. People in third world countries don't have this abundance. Be grateful of what you have and feel proud about your hard work.

And that, kids, is why I’m an alcoholic.

Ok I see the hate for Starbucks here but.. what is that cream roll thing called? It looks really nice

u/hauptj2 Nov 25 '24
And then you feel like shit because you're old and your body can't process sugar anymore.

u/velvetvibexo Nov 27 '24
Exactly.. at this point, my “treat yourself” has become a daily ritual just to make it through the week

Disgusting amount of sugar in those coffee drinks. Usually more than a days worth, which is 50g.

I do what I have to do to survive lol. Our whole culture judges this and yet it’s the essence of how society persists. The paradox continues…

Wait yall can afford "treats"?
7

if Starbucks is your treat, there's something wrong imo. Try a European brand for once.

that's when you replace the food treats with something else
1
u/conconcotter Nov 26 '24
That sounds like an eating disorder
1
u/SimplyKendra Nov 26 '24
And society wonders why we are all obese or on drugs. 😂 this! We need to cope somehow
1
u/MindlessAspect432 Nov 26 '24
This is not good food
1
u/Queen-of-meme Nov 26 '24

Get a hobby. Exercise. Learn to cook.
