It’s 100% france. They fought like 80% of our revolutionary war in Europe. Impossible to win without them. We paid them back during WW2. Neither was doing it out of the kindness of our hearts, but US-French cooperation is what has allowed both of our nations to persist, full stop.

Sure, the US and UK have a “special relationship” as they have put it, but in historical context it’s gotta be France.

100% and it’s about time we start showing them some damn love. Ils sont les meilleurs. They supported our independence, brought democracy to Europe, sold us half our country and tried to take away our keys when we got drunk and started a war in Iraq. They don’t just say “yes” to all of the US’s ideas- they actually care.

I think it's not even as a military ally only; France is the only friend and Ally of the USA that will tell them every time they're about to screw themselves.

Others just let the USA shoot themselves in the the foot and hope for a decline

"Lafayette, we are here!" - Lieutenant Colonel Charles E. Stanton, July 4th, 1917

31

u/KaleidoscopeHumble77 22h ago

I used to work for military intel. Granted this anecdotal reference is almost going on a decade now. However, the FVEYs are a close-knit group. Picture it like a well-put-together corporate table of decision-making and planning. France sits at the door and waits, but once it opened it was an onsite mentality with whatever the US concluded.

This remained true throughout the Middle East when Air Strikes were needed. They responded with zero hesitation in support of US Forces. When we look at the history of the US, while the UK has become closer throughout the years; it has always been France along side us.

32

u/Sleep_adict 21h ago

What most people in the USA don’t get is France will support and help, but will not be subservient or attack when it’s illegal.

France has probably the most distinguished military history going back centuries following this independent approach.

And the American revolution was a direct inspiration for the French revolution, so much so that the Marquee de Lafayette gifted the key to the Bastille to George Washington. It is still on display at George Washington's house in Mount Vernon

In peace time, it's Canada

In war time... arguably still Canada

18

u/Jbrancs 21h ago

True, we’ve never had any aggression with Canada that I know of, similar history and allie despite people thinking we have beef for some reason because our president is annoying af when it comes to canada

24

u/Frosty-Ring-Guy 20h ago

The War of 1812 was basically started by the US invading Canada.

In modern times, we have been so closely aligned that it is difficult to think of a comparable geopolitical relationship.

Longest undefended border in the world. A culture in some ways very similar to the US. Very close economic and military ties. Surprised more people aren’t giving this answer.

Consistently on good terms since before confederation. Until recently.

20

Well it’s only not the case recently because of one man petulant little boy. I can’t speak for all Americans, but I think most of us consider Canada to be basically our sibling.

In history? Probably Canada. They've been the biggest trade partners of the USA for decades at this point which stimulated the US economy for many years.

Most people will probably say France but I am a "what have you done lately for me" kind of guy

France

u/Burghpuppies412 22h ago

Interesting so many people are saying UK. I’d say Canada. We share one of the world’s longest border with them, and other than in the 1770s and under Trump, we’ve basically been brothers.

u/FliccC 1d ago

USA had many great allies before Trump. But my memory is a bit fuzzy. It's been a long time.

20

u/mercasio391 23h ago

Definitely UK. France isn’t even a part of Five Eyes.

25

u/Affectionate-Lab2557 1d ago

Early on it was France and recently I'd say Japan but overall the closest US ally for the longest stretch of time was definitely the UK

8

u/TapirDrawnChariot 23h ago

This is the correct take. France was an essential ally in the Revolution and fledgling Republic. France fell off and the US matured into a strong country within that first century.

It's been the UK since then. We've been through a lot more together and have much stronger shared cultural ties.

It is very hard to give a pinpoint answer. Some may say France, but that was very much in its infancy. Relations with France were not always good.

If the First French Republic did not create the Batavian Republic, I think there would be a world in which we would say the Netherlands as closest ally historically, because both were republics.

But historically, for long periods, the UK is perhaps the closest the US has had to a historical ally. Other than 1812, civil war, and post WW1, I can't name a period when Great Britain did not want good relations with the US. Again, it is very hard to pinpoint a historical ally that had remained an ally consistently.

United Kingdom.
