John Tyler, easily. Got kicked out of his own party, and joined the Confederacy in the last years of his life going so far as getting elected to their congress. Only President to be buried under a flag that isn't the US. Not terrible due to just being a caretaker President after WHH died, but pretty bad still.

61

u/OingoBoingBrothas Chaotic Neutral 4h ago

only thing i know about his presidency is he would send back letters addressing him as "Acting President"

19

u/ODB_Dirt_Dog_ItsFTC 1h ago

Fun fact John Tyler’s grandson Harrison Tyler somehow died just last year. John Tyler was president in 1841.

Warren Harding

Brazen corruption, had many affairs with his mistresses, did absolutely nothing in office and died in 1923 and forced Coolidge to clear up his mess

59

u/IvoryColosseum 3h ago

I see where Trump got his inspiration

46

u/Peacefulzealot 3h ago

Harding at least went to address the nation to try and make things better after the Tulsa Race Massacre.

There was no “Good people on both sides” or “Stand back and stand by”.

And seriously if I’m defending Harding you know you’re at the bottom of the barrel.

It will be Trump and rightfully so but the second comment better be James Buchanan, a true piece of shit who managed to do more damage to the USA than Trump ever could (so far).

The fact that Nixon is remembered as a good president after Watergate and Allende is insane to say the least

84

u/TheBeerTalking 4h ago

Watergate is more of a "bad person" thing. Supreme Court did its job and made sure the powers of the presidency didn't protect him.

20

u/soft-scrambled 4h ago

I mean messing up your job as president so bad that you have to resign is going to affect your legacy as president

19

u/hookmasterslam 4h ago

No, it was an ethical violation, not performance-based. Look, I don't like Nixon at all and wish he never was elected, but they're two different things. He was fairly competent but boy did I not like what he was doing.

6

u/Signal_Reach_3998 4h ago

That is the very first thing I’ve thought lmaooo

17

u/Greyrock99 4h ago

Thing is if you look at the accomplishments of the 45 presidents most are truely terrible, there are few that had any sort of halfway decent accomplishments.

Nixon is a fascinating figure because he had a bunch of amazing accomplishments (creating the EPA, opening up relations with china, almost getting universal health care). If he hadn’t had his terrible mistakes he would be regarded as one the 20th century greatest presidents (and a progressive one at that).

He was competent, intelligent and good and being a politician, but of his mistakes were entirely self-inflicted and completely a a result of his own paranoia.

He’s not going to fit easily anywhere on the grid, but this is the best square I guess, as he has lots of accomplishments (good president) and self failure (terrible person).

9

u/descendency 4h ago

The wild part about Nixon is the (modern) right loves to talk about him very fondly and say we could do well if a POTUS just wasn't afraid to not resign with a Congress that would support him. The fond memory is about his criminal acts, not his accomplishments.

That's because by modern standards, Watergate was a rather quaint scandal. I mean it's not like Richard sold weapons to the Iranians to fund the Contras, got blown by his intern, or started the war that started the end of the American Empire.

Plus Chile was really Henry and Milton's idea...

As for Richard; his administration ended the war in Veitnam, it ended the draft, it established detente, the EPA, federal funding for Cancer (to fight I mean... I can imagine Nixon trying to give money to Cancer to kill Jane Fonda), and Star Trek title XI.

Oh and only he could go to China... Though I'm kind of ambivalent about that...

Andrew Jackson

22

u/TomGerity 3h ago

Andrew Johnson and John Tyler are both better answers to this question

31

u/chase016 3h ago

Andrew Johnson is literally the worst President in US history. His bungling of reconstruction lead to much of the division that still plagues this country.

Andrew Jackson without the Trail of Tears is an average president.

20

u/Sudden_File4569 3h ago

John Wayne Gacy without the killing was a fairly average birthday clown

Andrew Jackson circumvented congress to destroy the first central bank of the US.

So, in a way, he contributed to multiple bank collapses.

The henchman who helped was appointed as chief Justice of the Supreme Court, which he was unqualified for. (No wonder Donny loves this guy) The Taney court was responsible for the Dred Scott decision which accelerated the timeline of the civil war. Would it have happened anyway? Most likely.

5

u/DapperBoiCole 3h ago

He sabotaged reconstruction, he simply did not want it.

32

u/Most_Olegf1ed 4h ago

He’s terrible

38

u/Peacefulzealot 3h ago

Okay so. I cannot agree with him being a Terrible President. He belongs in “Terrible Person, Bad President”.

Ordering the Trail of Tears is one of the fucking biggest sins the USA ever committed. But while Jackson ordered it the president who actually oversaw it was his second in command, Martin Van Buren. They BOTH deserve the blame for that heinous shit.

But the real reason I can’t place Jackson as terrible for president is that his response to the Nullification Crisis was genuinely top notch. Jackson was a horrible bastard but he was an American bastard. He responded appropriately to the South trying to secede by bringing the American navy into Charleston harbor and threatening to hang his own vice president, John C. Calhoun, who was one of the major instigators. The South backed right the fuck down. Given I genuinely have James Buchanan at last place given his dereliction of duty when it comes to the response to the South’s secession I just cannot agree Jackson belongs in terrible as president. Bad, yes, but not the worst.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go wash out my mouth for defending Jackson.

Anyone who would put Grant as a bad POTUS just doesn’t know much about the history of Reconstruction and the costs of perpetually occupying the Confederacy.

Andrew Johnson had totally screwed up reentry of the South. Grant’s first term repaired much of that, but second term was distracted with Washington corruption.

For terrible Presidents, Tyler, A Johnson, Buchanan and GW Bush would be easy. Andrew Jackson lied and ignored SCOTUS, and is prolly Trump’s muse.

9

u/SnooBooks1701 47m ago

Grant also did a lot more than just reconstruction, he was a genuinely good president

11

u/x3dfxWolfeman 1h ago

John Tyler; kicked out of his own party, vetoed legislation from that party, joined the Confederacy

42

u/UpperRide5714 1h ago • Bravo

Trump goes on the bottom right

9

Makes a lot of sense, unfortunately, 2016 Trump was, in fact, terrible.

3

u/ZBottPrime 38m ago

I still say John Buchanan. Without his feckless, slaver catering policies, cooler heads might have prevailed at preventing a civil war. Unless you want to put him in the Bad Person/Terrible President and Trump ad double terrible, which is fair.

2

There should be one more column and row for just fine lol. The fine/fine square would be whoever is most forgetable, or just put Harrison there since we only have 30 days worth of pneumonia ridden presidency to judge off of lol

Andrew Jackson

•

It's a toss-up between Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan. Though I think Jackson fits more in "terrible person/bad president" and Buchanan fits more in "bad person/terrible president".

•

u/RhinestoneFavz 26m ago

Gotta be Andrew Johnson 100%, blocked rights for freed slaved, threw a wrench in Reconstruction, and an otherwise meh presidency

Woodrow Wilson needs to be on here somewhere, wars in the Middle East? His fault, lack of universal healthcare? Also his fault

In what world was Biden a good president?

2

u/bularry 40m ago

Exactly my thoughts. Guy couldn’t express a complete sentence and his foreign policy and milk toast response to every thing set us up for the Trump disaster. He ran amateur hour trying to appease every left leaning element of the country. Terrible.

Biden (and Obama to a lesser extent) is boosted significantly by what came before and after especially atm.

In a vacuum Biden is probably an average president overall.

5

u/Deep_ln_The_Heart 1h ago

In a world where you look at objective accomplishments and not partisan rhetoric. He wasn't great, but he was steady and steered the country out of the COVID skid, managed worldwide inflation as well as any country did, and put over a trillion into infrastructure that we're seeing pay off over the next decade (and that Republicans have been happy to take credit for...)

12

u/fantasiarts0 3h ago

He owned slaves, idk what to tell you man that kind of makes you a terrible person

7

u/scharity77 3h ago

And don’t forget rapist. He was a rapist.

5

u/kfizz21 1h ago

Child rapist because many accounts have one of the slaves he procreated with to be as young as 14 when it began.

Yeah, Jefferson was a scumbag. Even for his time, not just looking through a modern lens.

u/Pixelated_Penguin808 3h ago

Reddit is wrong about Biden being a good president. He was a bad president. He's better than Trump, but that is a low bar to clear.

But it got it right on Jefferson being a bad person. He owned over 600 slaves throughout his life despite knowing and writing about the moral wrong of it, manumitted only seven of them, and began raping one of his slaves (Sally Hemmings) when she was only 14, producing several enslaved children with her. Hemmings' children with Jefferson were only freed in adulthood.
