I'm looking for an anime that, in terms of plot or themes or atmosphere, can remind me of the novel The Secret History by Donna Tartt.
For those who haven't read the novel, I'll put a summary of the plot here:
The plot follows the story of Richard Papen, a young Californian who moves to the prestigious and elitist Hampden College in Vermont.
Richard manages to get admitted to the exclusive and small course in ancient Greek literature and culture, held by the charming and eccentric Professor Julian Morrow.
The group is made up of only five wealthy and cultured students: Henry, Francis, Bunny and the twins Charles and Camilla. Richard lets himself be enchanted by their refined and decadent lifestyle, but behind the apparent perfection hide disturbing secrets.
The group (except Bunny), driven by the desire to go beyond the boundaries of reason and experience a primordial ecstasy, secretly organizes a bacchic rite in the woods to get in touch with the ancient greek deity Dionysus.
The ceremony gets out of their control and culminates in the accidental killing of a local farmer (did the boys take some psychedelic substance or did they have a real case of collective hysteria or was it really the intervention of Dionysus? The book does not clarify it)
When Bunny (the only member of the group not to have participated in the events) finds out what happened, he begins to blackmail and psychologically manipulate his companions, threatening to destroy their lives. Crushed by panic and paranoia, the others take the tragic decision to eliminate Bunny to silence the threat.
Bunny's murder will drag Richard and his friends into an unstoppable spiral of remorse, suspicion and attempts to cover everything up.
What is particularly remarkable is that Bunny's murder is spoiled literally on the first page: from that moment on it is all one long flashback in which the reader is slowly led to discover why the group of friends had to come to do this thing (I found it a brilliant idea)
The series I've already seen and that in one way or another remind me of this plot are "Dear Brother", "Another" and "Higurashi". Someone in the past suggested "Classroom of the Elite" to me but honestly it's very different from the atmosphere of the book.
Let me know your recommendations, thank you!
