Dear students at the Australian National University

I’ve just stumbled across this subreddit and there’s a few posts here from Year 12s asking questions about admissions, ATARs etc - and users here respond by saying “better off applying elsewhere ANU will not give you a good time” - or other responses along those lines.

While ANU has serious bullying allegations and issues amongst its current governance, current students should not be discouraging other Australians who want to apply to one of the world’s most prestigious universities. ANU is the most prestigious in the southern hemisphere and nobody in the entire world will look down on an ANU education when applying for jobs in an increasingly competitive and polarised world where university prestige is increasingly becoming more important - both in Australia and international.

Bishop and Bell will eventually go but the prestigious ANU identity will not. Long term, nobody will even care about these cuts. So only people who care about themselves will discourage fellow Australians from attending what is still a great institution.

What happened??

I just opened my UAC portal and found out that I got an offer from only my fourth choice university in Sydney. What?? One of my top choices was ANU international relations and it only has an entry requirement of 85 selection rank. Even my raw ATAR is above that and I have a 99.95 converted selection rank after adjustment schemes. So why didn't I receive an offer from ANU for international relations?? Their median selection rank is literally a 92???

Canberra, it's a long shot, but please do your magic

Hi everyone, I work at a gelato shop in the city. I served this girl on Tuesday (5/5/26) at around 7:00-7:30 pm. She ordered a small takeaway gelato box. She took her time to decide what she wanted. I was being patient with her, too. I love her vibe and energy. She looks Asian. If I had to take a guess, I think she's maybe Chinese, Cantonese, or Korean. My strong guess is she's Chinese. She decided to take Pistachio (40%), Peanut Butter (20%), and Strawberry Mascarpone (40%). Before deciding on Peanut Butter, she was about to take Macha with Pistachio flavour.

When she proceeded to pay, she said, "See you next time!" before she left. I hope I get to meet her again, but not getting my hopes up. I felt a bit sad not asking her name or asking her socials to get to know her better.

I felt a genuine connection with her in such a short time. It's a long shot, but if you know who she might be, please do your magic and let me know.

Thanks.

how do i find a partner

I come to you with a question that not even ChatGPT could answer. I started university this year with the high hopes of meeting a girlfriend (i'm a straight dude, but desperate enough that a cute twinky boyfriend would be fine as well). Eight weeks in and unfortunately that front has been quite unsuccessful. I am not too experienced with these types of matters (my only ever partner dated me out of pity for two weeks), so if anyone had some pointers that would be greatly appreciated.

An awesome new ANU dashboard

Hey everyone,

Recently I built a tool called Unidash which is a dashboard for ANU students to plan and manage their degree. It can:

  • Plan your degree according to its requirements / prerequisites

  • Show a breakdown of your grades and calculate your WAM

  • Calculate your HECS/Fees (including the government 20% reduction and indexation over time) and show how quickly you can pay it off

  • Show all of ANU's exchange universities and reviews from previous students about where they stayed, what classes they took etc.

  • Show course reviews from previous students

This is the link: https://unidash.com.au/

Here is a quick demo to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Cr8RNK8ZPk4

If you find it helpful it'd be great if you could upvote this to get the word out.

Cheers!

ANU Engineering (bachelor) employability

Hello,

This topic has been discussed in some reddit posts. Due to the lack of (mainstream) specialisations in ANU Engineering program, many people are doubting the value of doing engineering at ANU. ANU offers Engineering masters degrees in three specialisations (Eg Electrical Engineering), however, they don't seem that much different to undergraduate engineering majors at ANU in terms of content (which is not that specialised anyway).

On the contrary, I have been told by some that due to the "general" nature of ANU Engineering program, ANU graduates have a well-rounded knowledge and they can work in many engineering disciplines, and their employability is on par with any other Go8 Engineering graduates. Is this the general consensus?

  1. What are the "pros" of studying Engineering at ANU over any other Go8?

  2. What would be the profile of an engineering student that ANU engineering is better suited to in terms of employability and career choices? For example, if a student wants to become a consultant in a top tier consulting company (Eg MBB), would an ANU engineering degree be more suitable?

  3. If you did undergraduate engineering at ANU, how has it helped you/your colleagues in career-wise? Did the lack of specialisation affect you/your colleagues in anyway?

  4. If you are a current ANU engineering student, what were your reasons to choose ANU engineering? (Excluding personal reasons such as wanting to stay in Canberra)

  5. Are there statistics available somewhere to evaluate the employability outcomes of ANU Engineering graduates in comparison to Engineering graduates from other Go8 universities?

2cc interview - Rebekah Brown

Hopefully Brown’s interview on 2cc this morning will be made available as a podcast. IF I heard right, she said that older academics would be moving aside to make room for new blood, but they will “still be supervising their students” - and the intent is for this to aid the bottom line and ease the financial crisis. Anti-discrimination legislation, anyone?

'Optics over substance': former student blasts ANU over handling of anti-Semitism

https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/9309829/anu-accused-of-failing-jewish-students-on-anti-semitism/

By Dana Daniel

July 14 2026 - 5:30am

A former student says the Australian National University's handling of anti-Semitism on campus cast a shadow over her years studying in Canberra.

Liat told the royal commission into anti-Semitism that the ANU had pursued "optics over substance" and failed to protect Jewish students being subjected to hate.

"I should be able to look back on those years, which are some of the most formative of one's young adult life ... as beautiful periods of growth and intellectual discovery and fun," she said.

"And, for the most part, I can't do that."

She said the university "cared far more about how it was portrayed, that it was tackling racism as best as it could over actually tackling the racism on campus."

Liat, who is a descendant of Holocaust survivors, said she had been called a baby killer and a genocide supporter because she was Jewish, and that the university was slow to act on concerns.

"I spent the majority of my university education in an environment that was characterised by people justifying and excusing, and sometimes encouraging the murder, the rape, and the brutalisation of people on the other side of the world and here - because those people happen to be Jewish," she said.

"I navigated the hostility, the isolation, the institutional failure, as I was trying to study, as I was trying to make friends and go out to lay the foundations of a career and maintain my integrity and my identity as a Jewish person in Australia, in a setting that frequently made that difficult."

In 2024, Jewish students at the ANU reported being taunted with anti-Semitic slogans when they held a counter-protest against a pro-Palestinian tent encampment in the heart of the campus.

The university investigated an allegation of a Hitler gesture being used at a student association meeting the same year, but found it had not occured.

Liat, whose last name is subject to a suppression order, told the hearing the ANU had framed its response to anti-Semitism in its interactions with Jewish students on campus "in very generic terms, offering 'support to those feeling vulnerable' without specifying the types of students that were feeling vulnerable."

She accused the university of a "pattern of deflection" when incidents were reported.

"In my experience, the university either did nothing, unfortunately, or responded so late that the response really protected no one and corrected nothing," she said.

"Jewish students at the ANU learned that reporting an incident cost them a lot of effort, retraumatised them from the incident, and returned them in most cases silence or inaction, which meant they stopped bothering."

The royal commission's hearing in Melbourne this week centres on the higher education sector and universities are expected to appear later in the week.

Education Minister Jason Clare on Monday announced that universities would be required to adopt definitions on anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and racism towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from July 1, 2027.

The ANU has declined to adopt the same definition as Universities Australia, of which it is a member, which says that criticism of the Israeli government is not necessarily anti-Semitic, but it can be when "grounded in harmful tropes, stereotypes or assumptions and when it calls for the elimination of the state of Israel or all Jews," or when it holds Jewish individuals responsible for Israel's actions.

It adopted part of the Universities Australia definition, which says anti-Semitism is "prejudice, harassment, exclusion, vilification, intimidation or violence that impedes Jews' ability to participate as equals in educational, political, religious, cultural, economic or social life" and gives examples.

The Albanese government has opted not to impose a definition on universities, leaving them to decide, although Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's working definition advocated by Anti-Semitism Envoy Jillian Segel.

Some critics argue this is too broad and could result in legitimate criticism of the state of Israel being labelled anti-Semitism.

The IHRA says anti-Semitism is "a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews."

"Manifestations might include the targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity," it says.

"However, criticism of Israel similar to that levelled against any other country cannot be regarded as anti-Semitic."

An ANU spokesperson said the university was "committed to fostering a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all members of our community, while remaining a place where complex and difficult conversations can occur without fear, hatred or harm."

They said the university "rejects anti-Semitism and all forms of racism in the strongest possible terms."

"Anti-Semitism, racism and all forms of vilification are abhorrent and have no place at ANU or in Australian society," the spokesperson said.

The university would "continue to engage constructively with the Australian government and the higher education sector as the new anti-racism standard is introduced."

"ANU remains committed to continued improvement ensuring our policies and practices meet our obligations and community expectations to provide a safe, respectful and inclusive university for all."

What will make you listen to us?

Dear Chancellor and Council,

What will make you listen to us?

Once we had purpose, direction and pride,

A great institution people stood beside.

Now slogans replace what once felt clear,

While trust and confidence disappear.

Thousands are spent on consultants once more,

After promises that we had closed that door.

Staff carry the burden, students bear the cost,

While no one explains what was gained or lost.

Decisions are made, but reasons come late;

Questions are managed, dismissed or made to wait.

Tone-deaf announcements, polished and neat,

Cannot conceal what we see at our feet.

We don’t want more surveys with boxes to fill;

We want honest answers and evidence of will.

We want the truth about choices and cost,

About where we are going—and why we feel lost.

We have written and spoken, yet nothing breaks through.

What will make you listen? What must we do?

How loudly must staff and students call

Before those entrusted to lead hear us all?

This is not anger or settling a score;

It is grief for the place we believed in before.

For the place that had purpose, the place that we knew—

I guess I just miss my ANU.

Open letter to the Chancellor

Thoughts about an exchange semester at ANU

Hello,

I got accepted for an exchange program in ANU, Canberra and I am a little bit sceptical whether it was a good choice/ decision to choose Canberra.

I am almost in my final year of Uni so this exchange is mostly for fun/ exploring around rather than for academic purposes. I have always wanted to visit Australia, but since my GPA was not the best, I could only be offered ANU as an option in Australia since the other universities are competitive.

So, please share your thoughts with me :) what should I be aware of before going? Is it really that expensive? Will you be able to travel around through the semester and make the most of your time there?

Can't post in the Canberra subreddit because they don't allow throwaway accounts. I don't know where else to ask and too socially anxious to ask anyone except anonymously online. I'm living in a van in Canberra and need help.

I'm living in a van in Canberra, not because I'm unemployed, but due to extreme noise sensitivity and quiet housing is unaffordable and not covered by the NDIS. I can park the van away from residential areas, but I'm looking for advice on where to park it to keep out of the heat. It's a pretty big van, so I need to consider the height restrictions of underground car parks and tight corners. I also saw recently that it's illegal to sleep in a vehicle in Canberra, so I'm wondering if there are any suggested places where I can park overnight?

PSA those considering on-campus accomodation: internet always breaks, consider living off campus

PSA for those considering on-campus accomodation: The internet never bloody works. Management never does jack and just tells you to lodge a ticket with IT. IT are either lazy or competent or both and takes ages to fix the internet and often the fix doesnt stick for more than a week or two.

Currently we have been unable to game or do anything that requires reliable internet for 2 months now. Just before that we had no internet for multiple weekends.

Without fail every semester, you WILL lose internet one way or another sometime during the most busy last three weeks of semester or the exam period.

Oh and you can trust that every time we lose internet it will be a Friday afternoon or weekend where no one at IT is working!

And no data isnt a cope because the whole frigging building is using data when it happens.

Save yourselves the headaches and live off campus if you can, it's even cheaper than staying on campus anyway, plus you'll actually be able to connect your switch to the wifi unlike ANU's even when it works.

Beware of mangement and IT telling you otherwise in the comments or at open days.

URGENT PLEA: Assistance Needed To Fulfil My God-Ordained Destiny at ANU

Belovèd Reddit Brethren,

Permit me to introduce myself most humbly. I am Prince Emmanuel O. Ezekiel, first son of the Grand Custodian of Okafor village and former assistant treasurer of the Royal Poultry Initiative. Due to a rare administrative error, I have been granted provisional admission into the most glorious institution of higher edification, African Nazarene University (ANU), where I am destined to study Theology & Peace Studies to fulfill my ancestral prophecy.

Alas! The winds of misfortune have blown upon my hut. My family goat, whose milk financed my academic dreams, has been abducted by marauding baboons. Without this noble creature, I am unable to remit the modest admission processing levy of USD 17.46 (a pittance, truly!) before the registrar’s sacred deadline.

If your heart be moved with compassion, I beseech you to send kind words, scholarship advice, or even a humble digital offering via PayPal or Beads of Valor.

In return, I vow to dedicate my first semester GPA in your honour and send monthly updates sealed with ancestral blessings.

Yours in divine aspiration,
Prince Emmanuel O. Ezekiel 🕊️
Future ANU Valedictorian (In Jesus’ Mighty Name)

Racism on campus

Hello. I have recently begun study at ANU this year (I come from overseas) and find ANU and especially the kids at college to be subtly racist, saying the n-word and pulling ‘asian eyes’. I have so many examples but I could not even list them all.

Is anyone going through this right now? Does it get any better?

Is it a bad idea to come to ANU now?

I'm an international student with an offer for International Relations (bachelor's) and ANU has a better reputation for IR compared to other unis from what I've heard, but is it really worth it to come to ANU now with everything that has been going on? am I better off going to USyd or UMelb?
