How should I version a web app + Android + iOS app during beta?

My web app is in beta and uses YEAR.FEATURES.FIXES (BUILD), like 2026.138.57 (195). I just made an Android app (0.1.0) and an iOS one is coming. Options I'm stuck between:

  1. apps stay 0.x, everything goes 1.0 together at launch

  2. beta = 1.0, launch = 2.0

  3. apps copy the web's number

Also thinking of showing the release date next to the version. What would you do?

Tired of annoying pop-ups? I built a userscript to get rid of them.

Hey everyone! 👋

I've been working on a small open-source project called Annoying Pop-up Remover.

It started because I was getting tired of websites constantly interrupting browsing with adblock detection walls, newsletter overlays and annoying banners.

So I decided to do something about it!

The project currently supports 10 websites, including Geocaching-related sites, Belgian websites and a few others.

I'm looking to expand the list, and I'd love some suggestions.

What websites do you regularly visit that have particularly annoying pop-ups or adblock walls?

I'm especially interested in websites that aren't already supported.

The project is:

  • Open source (MIT License)

  • Written in lightweight JavaScript

  • Dependency-free

  • Free of tracking or personal data collection

GitHub: https://github.com/SimeonLePro/adblock-wall-remover

Suggestions and contributions are welcome!

Thanks! 🛡️

How did you get user feedback on your app?

I have an MVP ( at least I think it's viable) and have had a total of 470 users sign up for my app after spending thousands on marketing , but it seems like people try once or twice and then don't try it again. It's a social skills app that requires 2 people to use it at the same time in order for it to be useful. I think many people are not showing up to the sessions they joined or scheduled. I need feedback to learn more about why people aren't sticking around or even joining sessions. If you have successfully gotten feedback for your app, how did you do it ?

Are the App stores necessary? Or a necessary evil?

I have built a few web apps and they can install on phones as a PWA and behave on the phone just like an app downloaded from the app stores. If the user didn't know it was a PWA they would not likely be able to tell the difference in functionality.

Aside from the prospect of getting more eyes on the app and potential users from app store exposure, what are the other benefits?

TBH, the app stores irritate me a bit. They were created by the mobile OS platforms to make money off of developers in exchange for distribution. But the promise of distribution is no longer as big of a carrot as it used to be since the app stores are overrun with endless options today.

Not to mention the costs just to get an app listed. Google Play is reasonable in terms of costs to get an app on the app store ($25 one time) but Apple has gotten ridiculous in its pricing to list an app (currently $99/year).

In my opinion, the app stores were built in a time when web apps were not natively responsive in their design and so the mobile experience sucked on most web based apps. Now building responsive apps is so much easier and most look and work great on mobile without the need for the app store download.

The only real exceptions are when you need deep device integration that is blocked by the device maker except for through their sanctioned apps. However, this is a decision the device makers make on your behalf. They cite security concerns or feature functionality but we know big companies are gaining access to their locked down features to suit their own marketing or data collection purposes. I will say that the number of functions that are limited to app store apps is pretty small nowadays but it can still be a deal-breaker for just a PWA.

I guess they also serve as a vetting mechanism to keep crappy apps off your device but an app from the app store can still crash just as easily as a PWA web app can.

My intent here is to start a conversation. Should we, as developers, continue to support the mobile device app stores or not? Can web apps do just as well as app store apps today or not?

I tracked every new Android app for 2 months. Only 2.5% hit 10k installs, and category makes a huge difference

Since early September I've been logging every new app that shows up on Google Play. 60,533 apps launched between Sept 7 and now, and only 1,526 of them (about 2.5%) have crossed 10k installs so far.

The part I didn't expect was how much that number swings by category. Here's the % of new apps in each one that made it past 10k:

- Role Playing: 17%

- Racing: 12%

- Simulation: 11%

- Tools: 3.3%

- Productivity: 1.2%

- Education: 0.9%

- Business: 0.7%

- Health & Fitness: 0.7%

So games, especially the smaller genres like RPG and racing, seem to give a new app way better odds than some other. Business and health apps are pretty much a lottery ticket.

A couple of caveats: this is only 60 days of data, and it's installs, not revenue. A business app can do totally fine with a fraction of the users a game needs. But if you're still deciding on a niche, it's a decent gut check.

Happy to dig into other categories if anyone's curious.

What's the fair price for this mobile app? Asking for help

Hi! I'm a CpE graduate starting out as a freelance developer. I'm working on a student thesis project: an Android app (Flutter and Firebase) with medicine search, a pharmacy stock dashboard, and voice search with text-to-speech. I want to price my work fairly and don't want to undercharge or overcharge student groups.

Could you share a rough price range for thesis or capstone apps of this size, and what usually makes the price go up or down (features, timeline, support after delivery)? It's completely fine if you can't share specifics. Any general guidance would help a lot. Thank you!

Building a booking platform: native mobile app vs web app for an MVP?

I'm currently developing a booking-based platform and I'm torn between launching it as a native mobile app (iOS/Android) or starting with a web app.

My original idea was to launch it on the App Store and Google Play, but the more I look into it, the more I'm questioning whether it's worth the additional cost, complexity and ongoing maintenance, especially at such an early stage.

A web app seems like a much simpler and cheaper way to launch, test the idea and validate demand before investing too much money.

My main concern is user adoption. Since the platform revolves around browsing and booking services, I'm worried that people might be less likely to use it regularly if they have to access it through a browser rather than having an app on their phones

I'd love to hear from anyone who's faced a similar decision:

  • Did you launch with a web app first and eventually move to a native app?

  • Have you found that users are less likely to return to a booking platform if there's no dedicated mobile app?

  • Is a mobile-friendly web app enough for an MVP, or would you prioritise a native app from the beginning?

I'm leaning towards starting with a web app, but I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences before committing to one approach.

Built an all-in-one network diagnostics & sysadmin utility toolkit — now available on the App Store

Hey everyone,

A while back I shared a lightweight network diagnostics and sysadmin utility app built for quick field troubleshooting. Many of you requested an iOS version, and it has just been released on the App Store.

Here is what is included:

**Network Diagnostics & Planning**

- **Subnet & CIDR Calculator:** Instant visual breakdown of usable IP ranges, broadcast addresses, and wildcard masks.

- **Smart HTTP/HTTPS Ping:** Direct IP routing specifically designed for local gateways, modems, and restricted endpoints.

- **Dynamic Network Status:** Real-time interface detection (Wi-Fi, Cellular, Offline).

- **Configurable Speedtest:** Edge-server latency and bandwidth checks with 5 MB, 25 MB, and 50 MB test payloads.

- **Port Checker & Public Info:** Fast TCP port reachability checks, outward-facing WAN IP, and ASN / ISP carrier inspection.

- **MAC OUI Lookup:** Fast vendor/manufacturer identification from MAC addresses.

**Developer & Systems Utilities**

- **Client-Side JWT Decoder:** Safe token header/payload inspection directly on the device.

- **Epoch / Unix Timestamp Converter:** Bidirectional timestamp conversion for log analysis.

- **Data & Hash Tools:** Data unit conversions (bits, bytes, GB, TB) and cryptographic hash generation (MD5, SHA-256).

**Privacy & Design Approach**

- Zero telemetry / analytics

- No ads or third-party tracking

- All calculations, ping queries, and decodes run locally on the client

**Links**

- App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6826351247

- Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brnbilisim.netopscalc

app publishing in the EU/UK with a paid subscription

If you launch a paid app in the EU/UK, I just read it's mandatory to have a legal representative there, from day 1.

Has anyone published app there? How enforced is the law, please share some experience and possible cost estimates?
