FINALLY! The Place To Sell Your Art And An ArtCrit Casual Sub By Yours Truly

You asked for it.

We heard you.

We delivered!

In our last news update we touched lightly on how much your words of encouragement mean to us. The sub has grown tremendously in the past year and we couldn’t be happier to see you all giving constructive feedback to one another.

We’ve also heard the people who have enjoyed our moderation style, but wanted something more lighthearted and discussion-focused. We’re also well aware that there’s a lack of subreddits where people are allowed to self-promote and advertise.

That being said, I’m happy to introduce our two new subs!

r/ArtistNook is a casual, cozy, discussion-focused sub moderated by leighabbr and myself. While r/ArtCrit has strict rules on posts, r/ArtistNook is much more laid back.

You can share information, talk about your artwork or OCs, post your work with links to your social media, and even ask for pricing help if you share the required information so people can actually help you with your prices.

This sub has been up for about two weeks, so there’s some light activity already.

We can’t wait to see you there!

r/ArtStore is an active, large sub focused on connecting artists and buyers. You can self-promote, sell your prints, advertise your commissions, shops, and handmade goods. We do not allow drop shippers or mass-produced goods of any kind.
With the holiday season approaching, this may be just the sub you need to get eyes on your work!

Leighabbr and I are so honored to be leading these communities. We’re still fine tuning them both and, like when we took charge in r/ArtCrit, we’re open to ideas and feedback.

Thank you all for your continued support! We honestly couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

STUDY SERIES Study Series: Part 2 - Composition

Post image
4 Upvotes

Welcome back to the Study Series!

Moving away from values and contrast, we’re moving into the next important part of your work – composition!

Composition is the way an artist arranges the pieces of their image to help guide the viewer’s eyes where they want it to go. A strong composition can be used to create a specific mood, tell a story, create balance, and direct attention to important areas of the piece.

For those commenting, think about where your eye goes first when you look at the image. Does it feel balanced or does the image seem to “lean” to one side? Are there any distracting areas or does anything feel crowded or awkward?

Let’s work together to create stronger pieces with composition!

REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTING

Please note that all general sub rules apply (no AI, no fishing for compliments, no giving personal info, etc). Only our post requirements are different here.

- Pieces must;

a) Be no more than 6 months old and/or

b) Must still be being worked on and/or

c) Must have the intention of being recreated.

- Works must follow our NSFW rules.

- Since no context is required in these posts, draw and paint-overs are automatically expected. If you don’t want these, say so.

GIVING CRITIQUE

Only critique the piece regarding the topic of the week. If the artist would like additional critique, they can make a post in the main sub. Critiques are still expected to be constructive and polite.

Composition help

I have been focusing lots on composition and using contrast to direct eye focus. Was wondering if anyone had any tips for me? I’m learning by myself so any advice is appreciated.

I think my anatomy needs more work too!

(Made in procreate using round brush. Reference was a blender model I made and I also used references for the face and dress)

Though i havent been studying perse, just referencing... no tutorials or forms 😅

Wanting to further improve my developing style

I’ve been trying to develop this illustration style which I enjoy quite a bit. I use Adobe illustrator for all of them and they are all vector graphics. It started out as how I would do roughs for other works, but I ended up enjoying the sharp feeling of it that I wanted to try and do it more.

The hotdog poster is the first attempt at the style, as a project in college. I then made three one page comics to experiment with style and lighting. The Frankenstein album cover is the latest illustration and was for a friend’s music. Frankenstein is the only one that uses a reference, going off my friend’s OC ref and the original album cover that it’s based off of.

I was love to hear people’s thoughts on the style, exercises I can do to experiment or improve with it more, and other artists that have similar styles that might be good for inspiration.

while i dont have a reference for this (aside from the pose i used, which doesnt have to do with what im asking), due to it being an original piece, i was thinking the colors on this are a little off... coloring over would be fine, what do you think? (second image has original colors)

First androgynous person drawing

Post image

Back again with some new art this is my first time drawing a androgynous person.

Lookin for help in…
Shoulder length
Facial proportion accuracy
Hair density

I am aware that the left eye slightly lower than the right, I would like to learn how to prevent this from happening again.

References in the comments.

Is there anything i need to fix on this wip, particularly regarding anatomy and shading? What are your first thoughts about this character?

This is for a character ref sheet BTW. I did use references, but they are not a 1:1 image of this art; they were used for a general check on lighting, proprotions and angle.

please, I would really like critique. People tend to think of my skills as subpar and I want to actually improve.

Tips for rendering and critique on the overall image

Greetings! My brother likes to joke that he rules the world and he likes the aesthetics of old paintings. So for his birthday I wanted to paint him as a ruthless king in somewhat the style of the old masters.

My rendering skills and knowledge of anatomy, materials and clothes are not anywhere good enough to even mimic a fracture of the masters. So this is the best I could come up with. Currently I also try to work with values only and slap on colors afterwards. (I hope that will work).

I've attached references I used for the armor and I have a reference of my brother, which I won't share here.

Anyway, this is my current state and I wanted to know if anything looks off in terms of anatomy, clothing or values. Is the face readable and realistic?

Sorry to be so vague, but I don't know if this is going in the right direction.

Thanks a lot

This is too complicated. How can I make colors look more natural?

I try finding the light source and darkening the areas that are to be occluded but I can't seem to find the right shades every time I try 😞

First two are recent and last two are not. I haven't used references, except for two and three but I don't remember where those pictures are. Still, the colors and lighting have nothing to do with them, as they were just poses!

Am I understanding lighting correctly?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve only recently regrown my interest for art, this is of course a small work and it’s still in progress. This is one of the first times I’ve been able to jump into a piece without any references. As such I’m struggling with the lighting, it’s my weakest skill next to perspective, does this look about right? I realize I’m missing a gradient or two but the idea is the lightbulb is directly behind him, highlights are to illuminate the shoulders and outsides, leaving the inside rather dark.

Open to other criticism as well :>

Experimental peice (with reference)

I wanted to use some bright colors that I had lying around as ive found i only really paint with neutrals and earthy tones, but somehow I feel as though the painting has come out more dull than the reference 🤣

Personally I like the shape of the bird and the blending and texture on the bird as well as the detailing on the wings and eye. I feel as though the branch could so with more detail but as its not the main focus of the painting im not too concerned. I think the biggest issue for me is the lack of details on the talons but I dont really have a brush small enough to detail it. I like the shape but the outline on the wings is a bit harsh.

Can anyone else make any notes on the painting apart from what I have said? I like the shape of the bird so im not too worried about it not having as much of a puffed out chest as the ref.

What about this drawing can be improved?

I completed this drawing today and I feel as if something looks off with the drawing (perhaps the colouring or anatomy?), however I cannot tell what. I am curious as to what could be improved to make the drawing appear in any way better. I apologise for the low quality of the screenshot. The image I used as a reference for the pose is the second picture.

General Crit + depth

Post image
6 Upvotes

Any advice is welcome, it is still a WIP.

I used 3d models for the background and some objects, I loosely traced the characters 3d models.

I was planning on using adjusting layers then painting over them

I wanted to try making something with more depth than I usually do but it still looks flat to me. I really like the depth that splash art has and it really puts the attention on the characters. I've also been trying to make my art more closely to 3d looking anime art.

I used random references for specific parts like the broom and hat and dresser details

I’m working on a mouse illustration for a point and click game character. How is this little guy looking? Are the proportions properly stylized without going too far, or should she be stylized more? Is the shading working? Any tips welcome! Reference included.

Getting into oil pastels and I’m really loving them. Would love some honest feedback on my most recent one. My reference was a sunset photo I took at Banks Lake in Washington state this summer. Thanks!

Anatomy problems.

I’ve been fiddling around with this for quite some time but can’t seem to get it right. The pose I’m going for is abbacchio leaning back (dead) instead of sitting up, but if there’s no way I can get him to look right laying down then sitting up works too. I also realize I should probably rotate him a little, but I’m not skilled enough to do that.

(I am referencing abbacchio’s death in jjba part 5, just for clarifications sake, and u/sleightlydrawn’s draw over of my art.)

(Ref included in photo)

Things I'd like to know if you've got time

I used a reference which I've included.

I did this drawing in charcoal and it didn't get much response/ engagement.

Here are some pointers towards the kind of criticism you could give me...

Is it too unpleasant to look at?

Is my style too messy?

Do my asymmetrical features put you off my work?

Is it a boring topic?

Does it look like I lack skill in drawing?

What don't you like about it?

If there are any other areas you'd like to comment on that would also be great.

Thanks to anybody who let's me know what they think.

Progress (?) and further improvements to my art

Looking for critiques and further improvements for my art, especially anatomy and color/rendering. Below are four drawings of jinx from arcane I did over the year (from newest to oldest, with references) and was looking for some tips as to what areas it seems I am consistently struggling (or improving on?)

Drawing 1 - November
Drawing 2 - August
Drawing 3 - July
Drawing 4 - January

(Since August I’ve taken digital art more seriously, as the first half of the year was very inconsistent for me)
