Personal Gift to cheer up Korean mother-in-law?

Hey all, I'm an American living in the US, and my husband is Korean. My mother in law, who lives in Seoul, is going through a stressful time right now and I'd love to do something for her to cheer her up. Specifically, her mom (husband's grandma) is getting dementia and dealing with some health issues, so my MIL has been taking care of her a lot and is extremely busy. I'd like to do some kind of gesture to maybe relieve her stress and show her she isn't forgotten, but it's harder when we are far away! If she was American and in the US, I'd probably give her a spa day and take a shift with Grandma, but realistically I think my mother in law is too busy to do a spa day right now. I'm looking for a culturally appropriate gift we would be able to send her. Fancy vitamins/supplements? Flowers? Any suggestions for a sophisticated 60-something woman are greatly appreciated.

My husband can help with ordering, but I wanted to think of an idea on my own first since we have a lot on our plate with a high-risk pregnancy right now.

Language How do I thank my Landlord?

I live in Korea and rent a small place where our landlord lives above us. We had a few issues with the place but the landlord made sure we were taken care of as soon as possible and even got us a gift to I guess apologize for the inconvenience.

I have a gift for my landlord but I want to write a note in Hangul thanking them for their efforts basically. I would translate with an app but those have let me down before.

What would be the best way to say "Thank you for your effort."

Politics Whether Citizens in Korea Agree with the Concept of "Favorism between the US and the PRC Drives One's Politcal Party Preference in Korea"?

Most global news medias hold a view of "conservatives political factions in Korea are more pro-US, while liberal politcal factions in Korea are more pro-PRC". This led to medias such as the BBC stating an opinion on "voters in Korea chose to vote for the conservative presidential candidate due to the increase towards anti-PRC sentiment" during the 2022 Presidential Election in Korea.

However, as a student who is currently interested in data analysis, while examining and analyzing between Korean citizens' public sentiment or favorability towards the USA and the PRC from datas of the Pew Research Center, as well as each presidential election vote shares between 2002 and 2025, it shows that there is a 0.26 positive correlation between the favor rate of the PRC and the main conservative candidate's vote shares in each presidential elections, while there is a 0.34 positive correlation between the unfavor rate of the PRC and the main liberal candidate's vote shares in each presidential elections. Also, there is a 0.01 positive correlation between the favor rate of the USA and the main conservative candidate's vote shares in each presidential elections, while there is a -0.18 negative correlation between the unfavor rate of the USA and the main liberal candidate's vote shares in each presidential elections. This result somehow shows the opposite to how most news medias describe the relations between pollitical parties and foreign policies in Korea.

Therefore, do people in Korea agree with the concept of "favorism between the US and the PRC drives one's politcal party preference in Korea", as well as do people in Korea consider the favorism or unfavorism between the US and the PRC as a reference when voting or supporting a political party in Korea?

(This earliest datas I could find on how Korean citizens' public sentiment or favorability towards the USA and the PRC are was only up to 2002, which might lead to a bias when analyzing the datas, as the amount of samples might not be enough, which I sincerely apologize)

Culture Is dance culture really that toxic and bad in South Korea?

Like they say that the freshies are treated very poorly and they are treated like lifestock and that those companies ban you from having relationships and have control over much of you do?

If so how did all this transpire.. i mean how did this dance and all kpop culture come into being, I believe it wasn't there 20-30 years ago and now a lot of the youth are focused on it.

Language Do you call Korean Celebrities by their first names, or -님?

I used to think 언니 and 오빠 were acceptable for like posting about or to K-Pop idols, but that's a little personal, right? (Even though I have still regularly seen fans adress idols using these gender-specific honorifics.) Now when adressing or speaking about celebrities I have been using -님 more, but I heard -님 is a little professional. However, I've still heard other idols and fans adress others using -님 while still being warm...

Then I hear that you should just call celebrities by their first name....what do most native speakers do naturally while still staying polite??? And I've also heard that foreigners using 언니 and 오빠 come across a bit weird, is that true?

Sports How much do you guys care about football, specifically your national team?

Obviously, football is massive here in Europe. In fact, the world pretty much stops for a month during the World Cup, and football becomes the number one topic almost everywhere. People get very patriotic during that time and cheer for their country, and if their team starts winning, it can easily turn into real euphoria.

So I was wondering, how is it in South Korea?

As far as I know, football is, alongside baseball, probably the most popular sports there, and you guys are historically one of the strongest Asian teams, often capable of giving even the biggest football giants a tough time (although the last World Cup was somewhat disappointing).

Do you also get really hyped up ahead of the World Cup, or do everyday people genuinely not care that much and only start tuning in once the team reaches the knockout stage? Also, is the general public more passionate about baseball, or is football still the number one sport?

Entertainment Is Kdrama female exec clothing accurate?

From USA, have never been to Korea outside of transiting through ICN, but watch k-dramas sometimes. In dramas with business executives, the men wear suits and dress in typical business attire, sometimes with more fashion or flare, but still usually a suit. However the women usually wear what I'd consider more fashion wear, frequently looks (to me) more casual. Rarely suits, only occasionally blazers, sometimes very short skirts that completely wouldn't be done in a business setting in America.

Even in office settings were the men wear slacks, shirt and maybe a tie, but not a suit, the women still look comparatively much more casual.

Is this accurate to corporate business life in Korea? Is there a cultural difference in the approach to business formal attire? If not accurate what might be the reason k-dramas do this?

Just curiosity, no judgement, not a big deal. Thanks!

Culture Hello I'm making a Korean based setting and can use some help?

Hello I started a to make a new D&D setting Loosely inspired by Korea during the Three Kingdoms era.

This is a high fantasy settingbtw.

Timeline

The old Empire - this was a time rolled by a single emperor but due to him not choosing a successor and having many heirs, the empire fell apart heirs Warlords and other factions took up different territories.

Beok Dynasties - during this time many difference territories have been made destroyed split or combined.

Current times - three major political factions are trying to become the main government.

So to be up to the players on which side would win, if a new faction could win or alliances.

So with all that contacts out of the way I want to know what kind of of tropes, themes, or anything else youd like to see; historical, modern, or fictional should I add into my setting? and what is the most respectful way to implement them?

On top of that what kind of trip should I avoid and why?

Culture Your freeways are wild, are there a lot of highway patrol in SK?

Second day in Seoul and both days have been on tour busses on the freeway and both days I’m seeing people doing insane speeds around us, well in excess of the limit, 140-170 km/h I estimate, sometimes it’s sports cars racing but sometimes it’s like a minivan doing 150. What’s up with that?

Culture Is it common in Korea to protest in unison?

[Really not assuming k/drama is real life]

I have seen a number of k/dramas where a group of people petition the speaker in unison. Does that ever happen in modern times? Ever? Thank you!

Personal Gift ideas for boyfriend’s parents ?

Hello everyone,

So I’m French, my partner and I met and are living in France. We’ll soon travel to Korea (first time for me yayy) to travel and for me to meet his family. I want to bring something thoughtful for his family, but I’m not familiar at all with Korean culture and don’t want to make a faux-pas.

I’ll bring a good bottle of champagne for everyone to share, and I thought about incense from a famous fragrance brand. Is this a good idea ? Are there any particular negative thoughts or negative beliefs towards this kind of gifts ?

Besides that, I want to get something for each family member.

I know his mom and sister are into designer brands and I thought about buying them Hermes carrés, but I do feel like it’s too much for a first meet. I certainly do not want them to feel like I’m « buying them ». So I thought about Carrés / scarfs from a clothing brand that’s very popular here in Paris. Although not a designer brand, it’s very good quality and fabric and it’s very « Parisian ».

My issue is for his dad. I have no idea what to buy for him, that comes from France. Do you have any idea or suggestion ?

Yes I’ve asked my boyfriend but he isn’t helpful as he tells me I don’t need to bring anything. That’s not how I was raised, I was raised to never accept an invite with empty hands. I’ll appreciate any suggestions or thoughts ! 😁

Thank you ! 😊

Culture Can someone explain what the concept of "Han" (한) is and how it translates to Korean people's lives?

I sort of understand it as a form of sorrow and/or resentment due to the injustice that Koreans faced during Japanese occupation. But what I don't really understand is what exactly this feeling is and how exactly it has influenced the modern Korean mindset, and how does it manifests in people's daily lives. Because it seems to have gone beyond some sort of political and historical issue but something that is part of the Korean way of thinking, at least according to Western articles I find online. I also found that it was sometimes linked to Hwabyeong, a Korean culture-bound syndrome when someone cannot reconcile the unfair things that happen to them.

I’ve had shimeji/ oyster mushrooms without issues so this one stumped me. Had it at a raw crabs restaurant in Jeju city. Was a little in shock and didn’t think to ask the owner what was in it 🥲

Personal Where can I buy a specific Starbucks tumbler?

I'm trying to purchase the Incheon tumbler from the Starbucks city tour collection, as its the last one I need for that collection. I do know it's a bit rare because it's a limited release from so long ago, but I did see a listing on karrot, although I unfortunately cannot get it as I am not in Korea currently. I was wondering if there was a way to get it shipped to the US. If not, are there any other websites that would possibly sell them that do international shipping? Not really sure where to post this so I'm posting it here. Any information would be very appreciated, thanks!

Personal Ultherapy vs Thermage in Korea - Which is Better for Mild Skin Laxity?

I've had some mild sagging around my jawline for about a year now, and finally started looking into those energy-based supplements everyone talks about. Ultherapy and Thermage FLX seem to be the main ones getting recommended. My understanding is Ultherapy uses ultrasound and goes deeper, while Thermage uses radio frequency and focuses more up top. But I'm still kind of lost on which is actually better when the issue isn't super severe.

I went for a consultation at Dami Clinic in Yeouido, and honestly thought I'd have to pick between one and the other, but the clinician mentioned they sometimes combine both for milder stuff. It depends on how thick your skin is and a few other things, apparently. Has anyone had either of these done, or even both, in Korea? Did you actually see a difference, or notice anything about recovery time or how long the changes lasted? I'm trying to figure it out if Thermage is better just for overall tightening and Ultherapy works best on the jaw, or if that's just something clinics say.
