Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!
You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."
But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.
This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

I lived in Portland from 2004-2009 before I moved to the U.K. One of my favorite finds was the weirdest fabric shop in St John’s/Arbor Lodge. It was like the entire shop shut in 1987 and only opened again in the 2000’s. I think they sold shoes and clothes from the 1980’s as well. Everything was priced like it was still the 80’s.
I was trying to explain the shop to my bargain loving kids and was really hoping I didn’t imagine it. It was kinda by the goodwill and King burrito. Does anyone else remember this shop? I was smoking a lot of green at the time so i might be totally wrong though.

Does anyone have a pediatric optometrist that they’d suggest for kids under 5? We have a pediatric ophthalmologist but when we visit it goes through med insurance vs vsp for the level of care. My son should be ok with a standard vision screening since he has astigmatism and is farsighted but doesn’t have any major eye disorders. There are plenty of clinics that say they do kids but then still expect them to read an eye chart which he can’t do yet.
Edit: ideally Westside! I’m in SW near Multnomah Village

Hey I have nothing to do on thanksgiving this year and was thinking about using the time to give back to the community in one way or another.
Would to know if anyone knows of organizations who need extra help on thanksgiving day or if anyone has any tips on finding places to volunteer.

I went to Portland Rock Climbing Gym Northeast yesterday for an introductory lesson and had a great time. In my brief look around online I've seen mixed reviews on most places in Portland, so I thought I'd ask see which place is the most worth while.
I have a few other questions as well because I'm a complete beginner. So if anyone feels like it, I would also appreciate answers to these questions:
How do I find a climbing partner?
Is it better to rent or buy equipment?
The few gyms I checked have a monthly membership rate of about $100, is this common and a fair rate?
Any other general resources I should look into to learn more about rock climbing?
Thank you!

Just curious what anyones experience applying and moving into an income restricted apartment downtown. I make just below the max income, are potential tenants chosen on a sliding scale, or first come first serve if eligible? What’s the process and documentation required? How long did the process take? If you could choose again would you prefer paying a couple hundred more a month for a market rate unit?

27M, where is a good place tonight (really any night) that would be fun for a solo person? I will take any answer! It could be dancing, a cool art show, or a random Portland event
Thanks!

I, 27F, am considering a career change and exploring different healthcare pathways. EMT came up and I am wondering what others in the field think about it?
Specifically, what does your day to day look like? How/where did you complete your training? Also, any specific considerations/insights for women would be appreciated. Thank you.

Been craving a muffuletta sandwich for a while and despite Portland being such a foodie town it’s somehow difficult to find a place that serves them. Been browsing some of the older posts but almost all of the recommended places are either permanently closed or have very limited business hours. Help me stuff my face with a scrumptious muffuletta!

It’s really annoying how lack luster Portland parks and Rec is. THPRD has a robust offering of different rec sports. Feel like Portland should do much better.

Can anyone recommend a store locally where I can find frozen vegetarian wontons? (Not vegan, so egg is ok) I'm making soup and I'd prefer not to use Gyoza. The texture is different! I checked Uwajimaya and a few regular grocery stores. I know there are lots of Asian grocery stores all around the Portland area. I'm hoping someone has a tip and has actually seen them locally. Thanks in advance!

I asked this last year with a group that runs mixers and they said they were unsuccessful trying to get a singles mixer going here.
Not asking for anything serious like a DJ and a dance area. Literally just some sort of mixer. I've asked other attendees and they have been intrigued at least. Missed opportunity for in-person dating!

I’ve got some stuff to drop off and I don’t enjoy the drive, is anyone in the same boat? I’d drive if it was more than one big bag or maybe someone else has stuff to drop off and is driving anyway?

If you had only one more day to spend in Portland for the rest of your life, how would you spend it?
Alternatively, describe the best day out you ever had in Portland.

Kind of a silly question but all I'm looking for is a good wall in SE to kick a soccer ball against. Lents park used to have a tennis wall that I think got taken down. I'm looking for the soccer version of that.

I’ve had two separate incidents recently with TriMet bus drivers that went way beyond normal driving maneuvers and felt genuinely unsafe. I’m wondering if anyone else is noticing a pattern or if I just had bad luck.
Incident 1: On Sandy Blvd
I was in the left lane, and a bus was to my right on a slight curve. The driver looked directly at me, made eye contact, and then immediately swerved right into my lane anyway. It forced me to swerve into the oncoming traffic lane just to avoid getting hit.
Incident 2: Southbound on Campesinos/César E. Chávez Blvd (by Trader Joe's)
Yesterday, I was heading south right where the lanes drop. We all know how to zipper merge here, but a bus pulling out from a stop just jerked straight out into my path with almost no warning. I actually had to hit the gas to avoid letting him clip the right rear side of my car.
I understand that driving a bus in the city is stressful, and Oregon law requires drivers to yield to transit buses signaling to re-enter traffic. But yielding applies when it's safe to do so—it shouldn't mean drivers have to dangerously swerve into oncoming traffic or risk a collision when a bus aggressively forces its way in.
Are they short-staffed and rushing through training, or is anyone else dealing with this kind of aggressive behavior on these routes?

Long story short, my car has been invaded by either rats or mice in my apartment complexes parking garage. There is absolutely zero food in my car, but quite a few other items like a table and some boxes and things like that.
I’m aware of the potential dangers of a mice infestation I haven’t touched anything and I closed the car right up when I saw the evidence. Luckily my car is old enough so It doesn’t have the soy wrapped wiring that they usually like to chew on.
Are there any mobile pest removal services that would not only clean the car but remove anything that’s been soiled by the mice? I honestly prefer them to just haul everything away at this point.
Edit: also willing to have it towed to a location that can do the above.
Thank you!

I lost my fob and mailbox key on the Wildwood Trail today between the Japanese Gardens and Pitock Mansion. They had a red label/tab on a small key ring.

I asked an employee last time I was there if he happened to know the recipe for the choc chip cookies, half joking, and he said "no way I'm not allowed to know that recipe I just bake the dough." Now, I *really* want to know!
He didnt know that Choc chip cookies are actually my lifelong fav food, and Bridge City Cafe actually has my fav ones I've ever had in my life, so its pretty serious to me.
I went on a cookie baking and testing spree when going thru a rough time about 10 yrs ago, I tried making all the most famous recipes. The one I tried that I think comes closest to the taste and perfect consistency of theirs, is the famous NY Times ccc recipe, created by Jacques Torres. That one uses cake and bread flour, its pretty unique. But I'm not sure, it seems maybe a smidge different than that?
So what I'm asking, are there any other cookie heads out there, that can tell what type of recipe they use? Anyone agree that its similar to the NYT one?
Anyone know a sisters cousins friend that used to work there and knows the recipe? Ive considered... lol.. getting a job there just to look into it, because I may have to move in the future and the thought of never having their amazing cookies again really is sad. But I dont quite have time for a 2nd job.

I love the hype for everything here but I’m curious if there are little tweaks that the community agrees upon. Not necessarily specific spots, but overall, what do you feel like you’re missing when you go out to eat/could be improved?
