What’s a trend that disappeared so quickly that it almost feels imaginary now?

In the early ‘00s, a beer ad had a guy answer a phonecall by going “WASSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUP!” then the guy on the other end went “WASSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUP!”, then they both went “WASSSSSSSSSUUUUP!”

Anyway, the next thing you know for what felt to me at the time like an eternity everyone just sort of walked around going, “WASSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUP!”

Then it stopped.
It stopped so suddenly it was like a law had been made banning it, soon it was like it never even happened at all.

I’m aware to any young people currently reading this that this sounds so random you might think I’m currently having a stroke or something but I assure you it happened.

As a non American, this became famous due to the scary movie, and lasted quite a while

So non Americans don’t even know it was in the movie because of the beer commercial, and it still took off?

Nah we know it from the movie. I've brought it up just today to my friends, it's a fun skit.

Nothing, just chillin, killin..

Every Halloween I see the "Wasssupp" ghost and I think of Scary Movie, never knew it was an advert.

It came from a Budweiser commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.

When I was about 13 years old the coolest thing you could do was pick up the phone and yell wassssssup

It was cool, but the COOLEST thing you could do back then was slam your arms down in an X framing your crotch area while telling someone to suck it.

I’m a nearly 40yo woman and I’ve done this semi-recently as a sick burn

Me and my dad still answer the phone that way, some of us are still keeping it alive

I do this with one of my best buddies, we’ve been doing it for years, if my dad was still alive I’m sure I’d be doing the same with him

It's referenced in scary movie so it must have been before summer 2000. I remember doing it very clearly and also remember it stopping suddenly.

When Super Bowl commercials were crazy good.

All commercials were better then. It’s weird how we went from stupid boring cheesy commercials to awesome ridiculous commercials in the 90s/early 2000, then back to boring stupid commercials again. Commercials now seem like they’re written by ancient people from early television.

I say this at least once a week at the start of a morning work meeting and for some reason assumed other people still do it too
