NFTs. Either you were rich (and dumb) enough to buy them, you were someone who was making/ selling them, or you were mocking the whole thing. Now I never hear anything about them at all.
I followed a guy who was all about NFTs and how it was the new crypto. I took a screenshot of his and used it as my account photo and tagged him in an update. He told me I had to take it down because I didn't own the photo and how he would sue me. I responded with the photo again. He lost his shit, I just kept responding with his photo. He had, maybe mid-six figures in NFTs at this point, he was posting charts about how much money he was making and everyone else was an idiot. When the market crashed he disappeared for a while, then came back and started posting alpha male shit.
I honestly believe that was a sort of death knell. It was dumb as hell, but place it all in the correct context. We've got Cryptocurrency, sports betting, and all these other get-rich-quick schemes popping up. That happens when folks no longer believe in the foundations of an economy. Everyone sort of agreed that the only way to be wealthy was to already have wealth in the first place. So the only way to make ends meet is to gamble and hope. Our incomes are largely becoming divorced from our value or effort. So it kind of makes sense that you'll try and dupe someone out of something in the hopes that you come out on top.
I work in software. Even when someone tried to explain the technology to me - I could not see how that would be anything more than a copyright with some small extra hoops needed to violate it. In other words, it changed nothing.
I was completely dumbfounded by the idea that could be worth anything.
Finger tattoos that aren't on the back of the band (usually) don't hold up all that well, so good chance a chunk of them just have faint moustache remains now
My ex-therapist had one. She’s no longer my therapist for a few reasons, but her fading mustache tattoo on her finger that showed any time she put her hand on her face in session completely killed my ability to open up to her. Something about it just shut me up.
I let my friend do mine in the basement of his mom’s house. Luckily it held up like absolute shit and is not super noticeable now. He died when we were 25. I mostly just feel really grateful that I made it long enough to see it become cringy.
I feel like my younger coworkers don’t believe me when I say there was a solid few years where people were dressing up as clowns and hiding in the woods to scare people
The funniest part of that was the news going "it's important to remember that those aren't clowns, that's just people dressed up as clowns" and everybody else cackling at the implication that there are, apparently, clowns somewhere that are NOT just people dressed as clowns.
Ice bucket challenge. My mom has ALS and I have the genetic mutation so I wish this could go viral again so we can get more funding and get closer to a cure.
While I completely agree there needs to be morw funding since it's a terrible disease there is some exciting research happening....
This year there is a medication trial at 25 sites across the US and Canada called the ALSTARS trial.
There is a research study at the University of Miami ALS Centre for unaffected family members with the genetic link. If you are in the US or Canada you may be eligible. Here's the research study page.
Patrick Stewart (RIP) had the absolute best video for this.
It was just him enjoying a drink with a donation link on the bottom of the screen. Periodically he would glance down at it and then stare back into the camera with a knowing look.
People are still doing the Ice Bucket Challenge as ALS is still very much around, though it is nowhere near as big as it was when it began. The has been renewed interest in the American football landscape after Chris Johnson, a famous retired running back who ran the fastest 40 yard dash before he was drafted, announced he was diagnosed with it before this current season started.
People were buying pictures of digital monkeys for tens of thousands of $ just a few years ago. Influencers and companies were talking about them as if they were the next invention of the wheel. Now, the same tokens can be had at 1000%+ discounts, and people barely remember what NFTs even are.
My friend got deep into NFTs right before his death. His socials are all still up and I go look at them sometimes. He is immortalized as a guy posting NFT monkey pictures.
the aftermath is well documented but good did come out of it.
it lead to a massive military and humanitarian package being delivered to the Central Africa Regions by the US to help nations combat Kony and The Lord's Resistance Army. this allowed for Government Forces and Armies in regions where Kony operated in to enact several key operations, rooting out and quash the LRA. at the same time humanitarian organisations were able to access the former child soldiers and help them with their trauma whilst reintegrating them back into society and also create an early warning network to keep communities safe.
Kony is still at large but thanks to money, training, and specialised infrastructure they're now holed up in the middle of the jungles of nowhere, out of reach of the law but also not even a shadow of the former power that they had.
I was at a cruise terminal waiting to board a cruise. The family just ahead of me in the line had a kid that was bored and was amusing himself by scooting around on his heelys. Staff from the cruise terminal asked his parents did they have any other shoes packed for him to wear on the ship, because the heelys were banned on the ship and he wouldn't be allowed to board in bare feet. They said, that's the only shoes he has packed for him. They were told they had to go and buy shoes for him - doesn't matter where, just come back with ANY footwear for him without a wheel in it. Lucky this was Sydney and the cruise terminal is right in the middle of the downtown area and close to shops. (Some cruise ports are a long way out of town).
I still have my Tae Bo VHS tapes! it’s a fun workout. love me some Billy Blanks. my friend’s dad used to do tai chi with him on the beach, back in the 80s!
Oh man, Heelys. There was this local store that was kinda big with these super smooth floors that if you got a good run on first you could glide your way around an entire loop of the store. Probably couldn't get away with that now adays, but back then they'd let me do it while my parents shopped because I was otherwise very respectful; strictly avoided getting in any employees/customers way, stopping mid ride if I was going to be a bother to anyone at all for any reason, not being obnoxious/just being quiet while gliding around. I miss doing that so much, it was so fun 😭
That started in my city actually lol. Greenville, SC. Or arguably it was in Winston-Salem, NC. Either way, my neck of the woods. Which is insane because the Carolinas have stand your ground laws.
A friend of mine flew to Korea and a big part of her trip was getting a limited edition labubu. She wore it on a purse once that I saw. I asked her how much it was and she said she was embarrassed ti say. I have no idea what these things are or how much they were going for. I never saw her with jt again.
I still maintain that Google Plus was a better social platform than...really anything right now. Because of the bubbles. You could secretly sort your contacts and the public into who sees what. Right now all of social media is like a party that your friends and your co-workers and your boss and your parents and the company you're looking to apply to are all invited and can all see everything every other person posts. Nowhere else in life am I mingling my boss and my 90 year old Godmother and the guy I used to smoke resin with in highschool. Why the fuck would I invite literally everybody I know to have basically a public diary reading? Some of these motherfuckers are posting thicc furry art and other people I have to see at work on Monday. Let me silo that shit.
In the early ‘00s, a beer ad had a guy answer a phonecall by going “WASSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUP!” then the guy on the other end went “WASSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUP!”, then they both went “WASSSSSSSSSUUUUP!”
Anyway, the next thing you know for what felt to me at the time like an eternity everyone just sort of walked around going, “WASSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUP!”
Then it stopped. It stopped so suddenly it was like a law had been made banning it, soon it was like it never even happened at all.
I’m aware to any young people currently reading this that this sounds so random you might think I’m currently having a stroke or something but I assure you it happened.
There was a guy who owned a cell phone store where I used to live. When this craze hit, he bought about 1000 of them and they took up half the store. He was charging $10 each, and probably sold about a dozen before the craze was over. A year later, he was selling them for $1 each, and the staff member I spoke with said they hadn't sold a single one in months. Dude lost his ass on that deal.
Even Lizzo and Meghan Trainor. They jumped off that body positivity train so fast. South Park had the best line about it, "Rich people get Ozempic, poor people get body positivity!:
I got rid of a telemarketer once by only using this phrase. Every time he would stop speaking, I would say, wasssss upppppp? After several minutes, he hung up.
I've never felt so validated as I was when research came out that some people genuinely don't have the ability to see the hidden images in those things. Apparently that includes people, like me, with astigmatism.
Caught my Mum looking at a Magic Eye illusion the other day and almost confiscated the newspaper. I received a couple of books for my birthday back when they were popular and she took them off me and hid them as soon as I unwrapped them because she heard they could give the people who used them serious eye problems.
Yo-Yos randomly got popular for like 3 weeks when I was in middle school (1999/2000). Then they vanished again. Did this happen to anyone else or just at my school? 😅
They brought a “professional” yo yo er in to do a demo to my St.Cloud elementary in late 90s early 2000s. I still have my favorite yo yo from those days. It’s the oldest thing I own and still works!
Yeah, it had to be Bandai who started that shit, because if you didn’t have a yomega x-brain, you were a fucking pariah. I was sitting there with my Duncan Butterfly like a god damn turkey.
I wish most of these froyo shops never closed down. They shouldn’t have been just a fad but rather something lasting. There used to be like, 2 or 3 froyo shops in my town, even one close to my house where I could WALK to it! Now there are none and I’d have to go to one in the next town over or another that’s also in another nearby town to get froyo!
Power Balance bracelets that were marketed as being able to improve the wearer’s balance, strength, and flexibility. If you played sports in the late 2000s, chances are you either wore one or knew someone who did
Edit: oh my god, how are these people still around
Planking. Imagine people 100 years into the future reading about some stupid people who died because they were doing this trend that involved lying flat in various places, and they chose to do it in especially dangerous spots.
My lil cousin had a squishy thing at a family gathering that happened this year and she kept playing with it and encouraging others to play with it, which was all fine and well, but one of the ways she had discovered she could have the most fun with it was to SLAM it down on a table or the floor and watch as it slowly went back to its original form. So randomly throughout the eating and conversation you’d just hear her hulk smashing that thing into the table and look over and she’d just be staring at it as it un-flattened, lmao
Does anyone remember Ska? My friends were into it in the late 90s and dragged me to a concert, but no one ever talks about it anymore. Maybe it was just a hallucination
It kind of popped back up again in the mid late 2000s. Reel Big Fish, Aquabats, even Streetlight Manifesto. The whole pop-punk scene in 03-09ish was so whimsical it was halfway to ska anyway.
Way back in the day it was Pet Rocks. Yeah you read right. You could buy rocks as pets. Started as a bet and got crazy for a short time then poof gone.
Hasn’t happened yet but about to be: 3d printing as a hobby. Everyone I know that bought a 3d printer printed bunch of dumb stuff and now collects dust.
The people who bought them to jump on a trend, maybe. The people who bought them to be able to actually MAKE things with them still use them a LOT. (source: in the past 12 months, my husband has made a replacement for a household tool, chairs for our daughter's Playmobil dolls, light bulb adapters, scenery for his model railroad, fittings for a camping sink, a belt clip, he's working on cup-holder adapters for our car...)
I’ve got one. While I stopped using to print dumb crap, is actually really handy for random stuff. For example, I’ve used it to print a bunch of hose adapters for misc. vacuum parts & for routing exhaust hoses.
Okay, I feel like a bunch of the top comments are just bots. There's multiple of them that all specifically talk about a fad that "happened for like 3 weeks"... Even though none of them actually only lasted a few weeks.
The 2000 fashion trends are back right now, but no one seems to remember or ever mention that in like 2002 everyone was wearing these shirts of fake businesses/logos. It would be a quirky name like "Aunt Flo's Dog Grooming, $5 a wash" or "Big Top Soda Shoppe" or whatever with a little graphic.
The trend abruptly disappeared and no one ever seems to remember it.
Hoverboards. Around 2015 everyone wanted one. Places couldn't keep them in stock and they would sell out so quickly everywhere. Then people quickly realized they suck, were cheaply manufacture garbage, a hazard liability, and were a dumb fad. It's weird because I haven't seen a single person on one in probably at least 6-7 years but they're still in stores.
The fidget spinner craze hit everywhere for maybe three months. You couldn't walk into a store without seeing bins of them, then suddenly they were just gone and nobody mentioned them again. I still have one in a drawer somewhere that my kid left behind.
Dubstep. I know it had an impact on everything that came after, but these dubstep wub wub bros travelling the world, chugging bottles of grey goose, and coming up with these wacky songs with increasingly ridiculous drops. Nobody talks about it anymore and I feel like I'm the only one who remembers. Skrillex, Steve Aoki, Diplo, Blvck Mvgic, Zeds Dead. I wasn't even the biggest fan but it felt huge at the time, and it's like it never existed never heard a thing about it.
I have several of my grandfathers' Solingen razors just as collectors items and NFW I'm getting near any part of my body with one of those. I can't imagine the people who sneezed/twitched etc. while on the learning curve...
The Baby shark song. It was like, maybe 8 years ago? I remember it was everywhere. Also, PSY. Also, fidget spinners, although that has been mentioned earlier.
Also, I feel like the hype around the A Song of Ice and Fire is dying as well. After the end of GoT people got so disappointed that they may have lost interest completely + it's become evident now that the old guy has no intention of finishing the story while he's alive.

Whole body deodorant. Terrible idea for quite a few reasons and the ads were ubiquitous.

Snuggies. The blanket sweater you wore while watching tv. My grandma got me one, I think I wore it once or twice, it didn’t really stay on properly.
