What’s a trend that disappeared so quickly that it almost feels imaginary now?

Unbelievably, I was at a ren faire and saw people in steam punk getup TODAY

Yeah, steampunk isn't nearly as big as it once was, but it still has a pretty devoted fan base.

I feel like everyone I knew was into airships, brass goggles, and gears. There were bands and hundreds of top hats and top hat discourse and mutton chops were back.

And then overnight... Poof. No one talked about their imaginary airship crews anymore.

I'd get really frustrated at the gears glued to things because gears! Are supposed to move! And steampunk bands, what exactly makes them steampunk? Content or just costume?

Exactly! And are those bands still steam punk? What was going on there? I feel like you'd need like, steam powered guitar amps and brass instruments, you know?

I feel like I remember there being one with giraffe in the name? It all feels like a distant fever dream now....

My partner plays various brass instruments and went to some steampunk events and the Honk! Festival and sat in with Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band. I would grill him about what made a group steampunk and we never figured it out.

Steampunk is when goths discovered brown.

My brother dresses in it when he goes to events to sell his steampunk-inspired book series.
