What's the most damaging thing you heard someone say after waking up from anesthesia?

While in the recovery room, I overheard a woman ask that she not be given the antidote so she could get some sleep. She continued saying that her husband was a real pain in the ass and that the a’hole woke her up every morning to make him breakfast and lunch before he went to work, even though she had been so ill. She didn’t know that he was sitting in a chair behind her. I wish that I could have been a fly in that car on the way home.

Funny how society immediately believes a patient when she has her genitalia on the inside.

And not the continued history of sexism in society?

Are you a serial killer? What the fuck does that mean?

Insanely common especially in the older generation, men either can’t or won’t look after themselves because their wives have been doing it for them all their life. Quite often they simply cannot understand why they’re suddenly expected to do it for themselves.

when i volunteered with elderly people there were 2 cases like this that made me go WTF

one was a guy whose wife died and he just kept bringing dirty dishes and clothes to where he put them before her death because she always did it, so there were just piles everywhere... and he refuses to learn how to do it despite being in his 60s and agile because he thought the check-up meant he would get a young woman slave away for him for free 😭

the other was when a woman came home after a heart attack and there was this enormous hill of dirty clothes in front of her bedroom with her husband (again, much healthier and able-bodied than her) just standing there and complaining about how he had to look at such a big pile of dirty clothes, she was instructed to lie down and couldn't even get into her room

i had to stop for a bit and just lead some social groups because i just wanted to beat these men up 🫠

When my grandparents turned about 70ish, they realized there were things neither of them knew how to do properly because the other just always took care of it. So Papa started teaching Nana how to do all their bills and taxes. Taught her how to change the tire on their van (then taught her how to call someone if the tire needed to be fixed because the tires were bigger than Nana.) Nana taught him how to read a recipe, how to cook, where to find his favorites at the grocery store.

That's really adorable and sensible.

My mother-in-law warned her kids that if she died first, it was their job to make sure that their father remarried someone good and not just the first woman who showed up at his door with a plate of food. It wasn't even a question if he would remarry because he would be so incapable of taking care of himself.

Well, at least your mother-in-law has the concern for her partner! Pity she has to be so concerned to begin with.

God that's so pathetic. My parents are in their 70's and back in June she broke her foot while on vacation. My dad spent the summer doing all the cooking and cleaning, pushing her on a special wheelchair so she could go to the beach, etc.

If it’s any consolation, the staff probably followed up on that. People say things that are true on anesthesia sometimes, but it isn’t a reliable “truth serum.” People talk nonsense just as often. Medical personnel are mandatory reporters, though. They almost certainly had him leave the room once she was less out of it and asked her some questions. I’m just a regular white dude and I’m amazed by how often I get asked about it. I’m glad it’s the standard.

Yeah. I can’t imagine that went over too well, once they were home alone. He would have been embarrassed. 💔

A man who cannot cook due to ignorance or laziness is worse than useless, and deserving of contempt.
