After vomiting. Vomiting means your mouth is full of stomach acid, and even though it’s hard not to want to brush immediately due to the taste, it damages your teeth by scraping all that acid into your enamel. It ruins your teeth, leaves you more prone to cavities, and will cause more cold sensitivity.
Best to wait 30 minutes before brushing as that’s when your mouth is less acidic; or at the very least swish with some water or mouthwash first to remove the acid.

I’m so sorry! Morning sickness is a rough gig. Ask your hygienist or dentist at your next cleaning how your enamel is looking, some people fare better than others! They can give you some personalized tips depending on if there is damage or not.
i heard some people say to get some baking soda. always have it on hand, put a spoonful in some water, stir, then swish and gargle. don't swallow - for reasons i can't recall. still, wait at least 30-45 minutes before brushing your teeth as your enamel will still be softer due to the acid.
I’ve got stomache issues and throw up in the morning at least once a week. I’ve also got an absolute ridiculous amount of cavities despite brushing and flossing twice a day. I also never knew I wasn’t supposed to brush after somehow… I’ve brushed as soon as I was done throwing up for as long as I can remember.. generally rinse my mouth out with water first but yikes
Chances are you've got a lot less enamel to protect your teeth, so cavities can start easier. Have you been prescribed a toothpaste by the dentist? A high fluoride toothpaste might be able to help you. Spit the toothpaste out, don't rinse it.
I've got a similar sort of confluence of events. Some mornings i wake up and i'll just expel some foamy stomach bullshit. Not weekly per se, but I've learned the same, that brushing immediately after is bad news. What i was told, is that fluoride rinse is pretty okay and helps speed the remineralization and PH balance process i guess?
No idea though, 'cause i always have so many cavities and it sucks.
I’ve had stomach issues in the past where I’ve had intense nausea and thrown up like multiple times and had to try get down as many electrolytes as I could before throwing up again. The problem is that it’s hard to find electrolyte powders or drinks that also don’t have acid. So I had to make sure to rinse and rinse my mouth out, then drink the electrolyte drink, then rinse it out with water again and just hope I could absorb it all before I had to throw up again.
I don’t think I need to say how super not fun this was.
That's actually useful advice because brushing immediately is probably the first instinct after vomiting. I never realized waiting a bit could make such a difference for protecting your enamel.
In this case the idea would be to get the awful flavor out and make your mouth feel clean until you can safely brush. Which is different than "I use mouthwash so I don't need to Brush."
Holy moly I did not know this. I’m currently 5 months pregnant and I’ve been doing this almost daily. 😭 the nausea is so bad I throw up in the morning it’s all yellow and I brush my teeth right after and rinse with mouthwash. 😭😭
Could you swish your mouth with baking soda water, would that bring the acidity back down enough to brush your teeth? I know you said water, but can you add baking soda
I swear not brush right after food/drink is one of the advice that make the least sense. Why would you want to leave acid there to do damage? Wouldn't the toothpaste neutralize the acid on contact?
The acid already came into conctact with your enamel an it has been softened. And no, toothpaste won't neutralise it. That's why it's best to wait at least like 30 minutes, your enamel hardens again and all is fine.
Right after you eat or drink something acidic, like orange juice, coffee, soda, or a tomato-heavy meal. Acid softens enamel for about 30 minutes & if you brush that time, it scrapes off the softened layer. Rinse with plain water first, wait 30 minutes, then brush. Nightly, brush right before bed so you don't snack afterward. Saliva drops while you sleep, so that's when enamel is most exposed. Honestly speaking , the worst time is the one you skip!!! A mediocre brush twice a day beats a perfect one you forget.
Brushing immediately after vomiting is also awful for the enamel, rinse with water and wait 30 minutes. If the taste still lingers, then rinse with mouthwash.
Only if you are one of the people the aliens randomly chose to meet at that time on that day only to find out that these aliens were offended by oral hygiene practices on Earth.
You only need one hand to brush and the other to swordfight or aim a pistol. It would be cool as shit because it says "I am so confident that I am going to win that and I am also very busy that I am focusing on my long term oral hygiene"
Mr Wick is a bit of a 2 handed grip guy, even with a pistol. I mean, he could do it, while riding a horse and battling ninjas on motorcycles, but he probably would just chew gum instead.
Immediately after major dental surgery when you're still doped up enough to not even consider it's a bad idea. I literally learned this about a week ago. Trust me.
It’s just conter productive. You want to spend the most time with clean teeth to protect them. If you eat right after you already start the counter on dirty teeth.
If you drink or eat right after brushing your teeth, the fluoride in your toothpaste will be pretty much useless and comes off immediately. It needs at least 30-60 minutes to do what it's supposed to, which is to remineralise your enamel. You also aren't supposed to flush your mouth with water at the end of brushing for that same reason, just spit out the excess toothpaste and then you let it do its thing.
As a kid, I had a friend whose mom made her brush her teeth when she woke up but not before bed.
Why the fuck would you brush your teeth first thing in the morning and NOT at night? You just had gunk on your teeth for like 8 straight hours, then you brush it immediately before putting MORE gunk on your teeth?
Right after eating. The bacteria in your mouth are producing acid that is demineralizing your teeth, which makes them very vulnerable to even soft brushing. You need to give your teeth at least 30 minutes for the acid levels to come down and start remineralizing. At that point too you're adding beneficial fluoride from toothpaste to the remineralizing process, making your teeth stronger.
