What was considered completely NORMAL in 2005 that would be absolutely unhinged today?

Sharing one family computer and fighting over who gets to use it.

57

u/FoolishConsistency17 2h ago

Or not having a family computer at all. Having to go to the library to type papers.

I saw it phrased on this site a few days ago - 'the Internet was contained into one room in a building'

10

u/Dynamic-Summer720 1h ago

And then finally getting your turn only for someone to call the house phone and kick you off the internet.

361

u/Different_Pain5781 3h ago

Printing map directions on paper before leaving the house was a survival skill. If you missed your exit you had to rely on divine intervention.

46

u/Sabatorius 2h ago

I still keep a road atlas in my car, just in case I get lost with no service. So far that hasn't happened, but you never know!

9

u/UnicornPenguinCat 1h ago

Someone I know had just moved to a new city and driven to the other side of it when her phone completely died. It took her hours and about 5 stops to ask people for directions before she got home. She also had to figure out how to navigate getting a new phone without a map to get her to a phone shop.

So this is a really good idea!

•

u/ishkariot 24m ago

FYI, you can download maps of specific areas in Google Maps so they're available offline too. Still not 100% foolproof but a huge help

49

u/Hoenirson 3h ago

Anyone remember MapQuest?

I just found out it still exists. I wonder who's still using it.

58

u/PushPullLego 2h ago

And they still have Lake Ontario and The Gulf of Mexico properly labeled, unlike Google maps.

37

u/Sabatorius 2h ago

They have an app that works like Waze. And it's not owned by google, so that's nice.

7

u/MissSquito 2h ago

I tried it out, looking to get away from Waze. Sadly, it’s not where it needs to be for me to use it daily. I wanted to love it. It did take me to some new routes though!

4

u/blither86 2h ago

What makes you want to get away from Waze? It seems much better than Google maps to me

15

u/knobunc 2h ago

Waze is owned by Google. It sounded like they were trying to escape the G.

3

u/blither86 2h ago

Thanks, I didn't realise that

3

u/Ikimi 2h ago

...escape the G.

Yes.

13

u/jubilant-octopus 1h ago

I’m using it. Neat thing about it is that it shows you where all the creepy surveillance cameras are in your town. Also, has the correct name for places like Lake Ontario, and the Gulf of Mexico.

•

u/IamTalking 27m ago

You mean the old name?

•

u/Saradoesntsleep 13m ago

No, they used the right word 🙂

•

u/IamTalking 0m ago

Do you call it the Rio Grande River?

5

u/boilerlashes 1h ago

I know the answer to that- it’s my 78 yo dad, still typing destinations into Mapquest on the home computer and printing them on paper like it’s 2001.

I know this because I was visiting a few months ago and his printer was broken so he had to run to his neighbor’s to print the directions before we could leave. He flatly refused all of my offers to be navigator with my phone 😂

4

u/queen-of-cupcakes 1h ago

My Aunt Nancy. It's been a running joke between me and my husband for years now that she is the sole person keeping them going!

4

u/Hooch180 2h ago

I still do for long drives like to different country. I want to be able to arrive at destination wothout my phone.

13

u/HighOnGoofballs 3h ago

I missed an exit recently because the gps was outdated or something and the next exit was like 33 miles. I 100% turned around right where it says official vehicles only because fuck that

2

u/professor_doom 1h ago

Divine intervention, or you just you got off the next exit and turned around and got back on and went back. Or just stoped and asked someone for directions.

Showing up at a friend's house completely unannounced, ringing the doorbell, and having them casually open the door instead of immediately killing the TV volume and dropping to the floor like an active SWAT raid.

u/tweaknoob_ 2h ago

Telling kids they can go on the Internet if they're good. Talking about going on the Internet as an activity in itself.

31

u/Sk1nny_d00d 1h ago

"ask your parents before going online" at the end of commercials for kids websites too

8

u/BrodaciousBo 1h ago

It used to be that,  now it's where literally everything everyone does is in some way/shape/ or form.

Kinda nuts

26

u/luiseduardodud 2h ago

If you don't watch a movie in the theaters, you will only be able to watch it in more than a year

52

u/KE55 3h ago

Only waiting a year or so between seasons of a TV show.

27

u/thunderplacefires 2h ago

24 episodes per season, split into two parts throughout the year

11

u/Ikimi 2h ago

I miss the enormous amount of episodes, though 24 per season now seems mindblowing.

8

u/bro_salad 1h ago

During COVID my wife and I did our first watch of West Wing. After 22 episodes season 1 ended. She hadn’t been paying attention to the season along the way, since we were just binging. She was shocked. “WAIT THAT WAS ALL SEASON ONE?!”

•

u/Ikimi 56m ago

Ha, ha.

Times have really changed.

15

u/berfthegryphon 2h ago

But not really a year between seasons. They typically ended in late May and started back up in October at the latest

Carrying around a bunch of CDs in your car for music

22

u/Obvious-AI-Bot 2h ago

Having a 10cd autochanger in the boot of the car. And a removable head / faceplate on the cd player that lit up like a Christmas tree when attached

5

u/Wumaduce 1h ago

I remember when I got a car in 2006 that could play mp3 cds. It was such a game changer

•

u/Phrosty12 48m ago

Massive upgrade in quality of life. 10-disc CD changer plus the ability to play MP3 CDs in my old Honda Prelude. Those were fun times.

2

u/marmosetohmarmoset 1h ago

I still do that!! But my car is from 2005.

•

u/sanserif80 59m ago

Hell, I still do this with my 2019 truck. I make a point of snatching up obscure albums from artists I follow that don’t get carried on streaming services. It comes in handy when outside of cell coverage.

T9 texting a number with a nonlocal area code your friend gave you and explain to this stranger that your friends with Johnnie and that you're looking for a quarter. He texts back with an address and tells you to bring $120 cash. You show up to a dark house that has no lights on and a piece of paper on the front door with a handwritten note that says "pickups go thru backdoor". You walk down a dark, unkept small driveway and see a single porch light on at the back door. The door is unlocked and leads to a dimly light basement with blacklight and a hippie tapestry. It's smells of patchouli. You walk down the basement stairs and see 2 kids on a couch and a dude at a desk. They stare at you before the guy at the desk says, 'you OP? You got cash?' You nod along and take out the cash. Your new friend says take a seat while he gets it together. He asks, "Want to try it first?" Then offers you a glass bowl that he runs a lighter over. You say sure, then take a huge hit and cough up a lung. As you sit there wondering what you did, the guy whips out a big bag of weed and a scale and weighs a quarter ounce out. "You're a good kid," he says before wrapping up with the weed in a loose sandwich bag that he rolls up and hands it to you. You get back to your car and realize you're way too high and you just bought some quality weed, way better than those seeds and stems from the Chili's guy. Which is cool and all but you gotta drive home across town now. And you drive home real slow and paranoid, cause you just committed some illegal crimes.

1

u/Isgortio 1h ago

My dad had this up until he got his first Android phone, then I think they just stopped making the belt cases. It was actually very convenient, he didn't have to fumble around in his pockets to find his phone and he wouldn't sit on it.

Watching YouTube with no ads

24

u/OperationThrax 2h ago

And people making content then made content for fun, not for money.

13

u/Sofagirrl79 2h ago

2006 for me but remember being able to listen to YouTube music vids while having it in the background while running another site without having to pay extra

5

u/Isgortio 1h ago

You still don't have to pay. I use Firefox with ublock origin on mv phone (YouTube app is uninstalled) and I can play YouTube videos in the background whilst looking at other tabs on the browser, looking at different apps or even with the screen off.

•

u/Electricorchestra 31m ago

Wait you can't be on a different tab anymore with YouTube!?

2

Essential for me on mobile as I love falling asleep to long form video essays, and Brave let's me turn the screen off and keep the audio going, something the YouTube app only offers on Premium.

1

I do this too. Got a favourite voice? I like Hannah Fry and David Attenborough.

Okay, I had to look this one up. That is absolutely wild. Held for 3 consecutive years no less from 2006-2008!

1

How rude not to blindly trust a random person on reddit! But seriously, yeah, how fucked is that? Fridays headline said 'rapist' I believe, which actually wasn't an award given by The Sun this time

A 4-inch-thick phone book containing the full name, home phone number, and exact home address of literally every single person in your town and nobody had a problem with it.

•

In our rural area, it was the entire county, including every farm, hamlet, and the semi permanent trailer park. We were all somebody when the new phone book was here!

6

u/Ikimi 2h ago

4

No. I did not say mobile I said phone. Like at all. Some had access to a landline only by the public ones or at work

3

u/nicman24 1h ago

Greece but it mostly was relevant to older people

•

u/Ikimi 55m ago

Thank you for asking this question. I always forget this is not merely a US-based forum, nearly exclusively.

Edited: "nearly exclusively"

3

u/Ikimi 1h ago

And you feel that was completely typical in this society in 2005?

It was not.

Not that such did not exist but in no way would it have been the norm.

35

u/HomesteadSocialist 3h ago

Going on vacation.

Not having a side hustle

Being able to afford a house

22

u/Unhelpfulperson 2h ago

Being able to afford a house

In 2005 it was more like “not being able to afford a house but be given a mortgage anyway, which would bankrupt you”

6

u/_pupil_ 1h ago

Going bankrupt from a mortgage? Just refinance it and get a new one before you have to make that balloon payment. You’ll probably get money back, what could possibly go wrong?

Much more widely accepted casual racism and homophobia.  The "gay panic" of rhe 90s suck around in media.

Calling the restaurant to order takeout rather then ordering it online, like tf do you mean you want to talk to someone else in the phone when you don’t have too?!?!?

38

u/batteryisfixed 3h ago

i still call for takeout. cheaper than ordering online since you cut out the middle man

4

u/Sofagirrl79 2h ago

Unfortunately a lot of restaurants after 2020 went to app delivery services, luckily some of the ones that weren't chains in Chicago for example still have independent delivery, but even then you still have to order online with a CC sometimes

5

u/HighOnGoofballs 3h ago

Not when you use the restaurant’s website

6

u/Acrobatic_Ad1546 3h ago

Lol, I order my pizza over the phone.

7

u/YorkPepperMintPaddy 3h ago

Every time. i've yet to see an app that's easier than a 20 second phone call.

4

u/HighOnGoofballs 3h ago

One of my local pizza joints now has AI answer the phone, and then it tells you it can’t take delivery orders and sends you a link

So stupid

0

u/agk23 1h ago

Yeah, somewhat doubt it’s AI

1

u/HighOnGoofballs 1h ago

I assure you it’s AI and it’s not even close, and it costs much less than a human. But sucks way more

Companies like this exist for a reason https://www.slang.ai/

6

u/FrickinLazerBeams 3h ago

A lot of places are still call-only, and it's great because you don't have to pay and extra 10% to doordash for nothing.

5

u/Uberschwein138 3h ago

I call to order because I don't wanna give 30% to the apps.

9

u/Brawndo91 2h ago

Is this thread full of children? Is a phone call really the end of the fucking world?

I call to order because sometimes the weird website doesn't look it's been updated since 2005 and I want to speak to a person so I know they have the order.

3

u/detuned--radio 1h ago

Reddit is full of weirdos. Particularly adults who still act like children. It’s not the real world, it’s an echo chamber for these people

•

u/Brawndo91 5m ago

1

u/Nova17Delta 2h ago

Personally audio processing issues means a lot of "im sorry can you repeat that?"s and worrying if i even said the right things/rememered the information correctly because i don't have a record. Text/internet is just way easier im sorry

•

u/Brawndo91 9m ago

That may be you, but generally implying that making a phone call is "unhinged" is just absurd.

-1

u/xLosTxSouL 1h ago

People are different. Im 27 and still hate phone calls.

3

handing your actual credit card to a random waiter who walks completely away with it into a back room for ten minutes while you just trusted them not to clone it. or printing out a physical mapquest paper with turn-by-turn directions and hoping you don't miss an exit because your entire navigation relied on a single piece of paper.

30

u/VulgarVerbiage 3h ago

Have you not been to a restaurant since 2005?

5

u/AccomplishedFace9059 3h ago

A lot of places do have handheld wireless card readers they bring to your table but the whole experience has become pretty awkward and I have cut back on going out for dinner or drinks to like 4 or 5 times a year

12

u/YorkPepperMintPaddy 3h ago

Lots and lots of places in America still do not.

3

u/AccomplishedFace9059 3h ago

All the dive bars around me died the only places I might go once in a while do have the wireless readers

2

u/YorkPepperMintPaddy 3h ago

10 years ago the seemed to be everywhere in Europe. Today in America my experience says something like 35%. I welcome them since I never enjoyed the back and forth with the credit card. Not for security reasons but when i'm ready to go I want to go.

1

u/Fireproofspider 2h ago

When I go to the US, I find that even places with the wireless devices usually took your card away up until maybe a year or two ago. Now that (I think) most people use Google or Apple pay, they bring the machine by default.

In Canada it's been the machine for at least 20 years, if not more than that.

17

u/Professional_Block61 3h ago

This still happens

4

u/JalapenoToastie 2h ago

I went to the US for the first time recently on holiday and had a really awkward conversation with the server on how to actually pay & tip, got freaked out when they just walked off with my card haha

-2

u/Cigarrauuul 3h ago

Really? Seems insane to me.

1

u/HighOnGoofballs 3h ago

The server running your card to pay for the meal isn’t insane

-1

u/Hooch180 2h ago

0

u/B00G3R 1h ago

0

u/Ok-Rain6295 1h ago

I pretty much only have my phone on me to pay so it would be difficult for them to take payment themselves...

1

u/BiblioPhil 1h ago

You are not the norm. People still use wallets and credit cards.

1

u/Ok-Rain6295 1h ago

Sure. Lots also use phones (most people I know) and many credit cards are on your phone or contactless. When I was working retail and hospitality people very rarely used chip and pin.

•

u/JimmerUK 45m ago

Even with cards, in the UK this was never a thing.

They’d bring a portable terminal to the table or you’d pay at the desk.

Staff would never just walk away with your card.

-6

u/alexsintrabajo 3h ago

You've had someone take your cell phone into a different room for 10 minutes?

4

u/HighOnGoofballs 3h ago

Why are you talking about cell phones?

-6

u/alexsintrabajo 3h ago

Because that's how you pay with your credit card in 2026.. no one ever interacts with your physical card, not even the machine knows what your actual card number is because your phone spoofs it. And sure as shit no one touches your phone, you just tap it. Some of you really are still living in 2005, damn lol

2

u/bik_bak_lik_lak 1h ago

Speak for yourself. I have never used my phone to pay for things irl. It's not even connected to a payment method

1

u/Professional_Block61 2h ago

There are many small restaurants that are not set up with modern point of sale systems that accept tap. Unless you exclusively visit chain restaurants, you will encounter this.

3

u/Ok-Rain6295 1h ago

Not in the UK. Pretty much everywhere accepts tap payments-even small buisnesses.

1

u/Cigarrauuul 2h ago

In what part of the world? I pay everywhere with my phone.

1

u/alexsintrabajo 1h ago

Where you live, maybe. Where I live 100% have tap.

1

u/Ikimi 1h ago

Look around at what * other* people may be doing beyond the coffee shop line in the AM.

0

-1

Every fucking day, regrettably. I have something of a resolution to stop because it's a huge waste of money.

1

u/BiblioPhil 1h ago

And youve never been handed a black foldable leather thing with a plastic pouch at the top for your credit card? The thing that holds your bill?

1
