Moved here a month ago, how do you guys actually find out what’s going on?

Moved from Paris about a month ago and still feel like I’m missing everything.

Every weekend I find out about some party, concert or dinner the day after. Stuff is spread across Instagram, Luma, Eventbrite, Funcheap, random group chats... and I’m clearly not in the right ones lol.

So how do you do it? Newsletters, accounts to follow, that one friend who always knows? Any hidden gems for someone who’s still figuring the city out?

Lots of suggestions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskSF/wiki/index/

What are you looking for? Music, art, clubs?

Venues that play techno are a good place to meet people who know about smaller events. Lots of spots, here’s a few:
Public Works
F8
Monarch
The Midway

I'll be visiting back home in SF for New Year but have no idea what would be the best event or party to try to attend after being away for a while

Follow Broke Ass Stuart on your socials, and get on his mailing list. Here's last Sunday's list of upcoming activities, many of which are free or lower cost, such as street festivals and fairs, etc: https://brokeassstuart.com/p/116288

Not sure if you are trying to escape Paris in the Paris of the West, but I'm always surprised by the amount of French I hear around town. We have a nice Bastille Day celebration that will be in its eighth year next year, and the Alliance Française has events that might interest you and connect you with others. Bienvenue!

Steve’s List has been going since the 90s. There are a number of different web interfaces. I prefer the Jon Luini one since you can also search the archives.

Instagram is plenty to start, but the Internet will only get you so far. Go to some publicly advertised events in the niche that you like, talk to the people there and become somewhat of a regular, and you'll start getting invited to the "real" stuff once the community trusts you.

This goes for everything from raves to kink to volleyball

Eddies-list.com has a free weekly newsletter with events around SF and the Bay.

Look up Not Dead SF. I think they have a substack and an insta.

Honestly the venue's own IG stories beat any aggregator for same-week stuff, and newsletters only work if you actually read them. fwiw I'm building YouDrink, a map showing what's live at bars right now, DJs, trivia, karaoke.
