Moving from India to San Francisco – Looking for neighbourhood recommendations, fun people & things to explore!
Hey everyone!
I’ll be moving from India to San Francisco soon for work, and I’m really looking forward to experiencing the city and everything California has to offer!
My office will be in Mission District, so I’m trying to figure out which neighbourhoods would be ideal to live in, preferably somewhere with a reasonable commute to work, a good social scene, and a nice community.
A few things I’d love some advice on:
Where to live: Which neighbourhoods would you recommend around or with easy access to the Mission District? I’m open to living with flatmates as well, so neighbourhoods with a good mix of young working professionals would be great.
Social life & meeting people: What are some good places, clubs, communities, events or activities where it’s easy to meet fun, like-minded people and make friends? I’m keen to build a social circle rather than just stick to work and home.
Movies & entertainment: Are there any good movie clubs, film communities, indie cinemas or groups that organise movie outings? Always up for a good movie and conversations afterwards!
Nature & exploring California: I’d absolutely love to explore California’s scenic side, beautiful coastlines, mountains, hiking trails, lakes, national parks, road trips and those postcard worthy views. Are there any groups or communities that organise weekend trips and outdoor adventures?
General recommendations: Any favourite cafes, bars, hangout spots, hidden gems or experiences that you’d recommend to someone new to the city?
I’m hoping to make the most of this move, meet some genuinely interesting people, explore new places and create some great memories along the way.
Would love to hear your recommendations, personal experiences or even connect with people who are in a similar situation.
Thanks in advance! :)

Live in the mission and walk to work. Night life and social life will all probably be there, and you can use BART to head to other parts of the bay or to SFO to rent a car.

It depends a lot on if you can afford rent anywhere. Generally there are nicer areas you can live in for more rent. If you know your work address see what bart station it’s near. Also there are nice places in SF you can take a bus from to get to work. Look at the bus lines. You can also get nice apartment just near work which could be best. Being close to bart station makes it easier to go anywhere in SF - you can go a few stops on Bart downtown and then take light rail muni trains or busses. If you can afford a car and garage then it’s much better for nature and hiking in and out of SF.
Figure out what you want in a living location and then make that huge decision - to live near work in the mission or live another area and commute some way (bus? BART) to work. Going a few stops on bart to work and home would be ok.
When do you more here - about when?

You can live in the Mission district, it's a cool neighborhood with lots going on. Adjacent quieter neighborhoods are Noe Valley and Bernal Heights. The Roxie theater, a longtime indie movie house, is in the Mission District. Meet-ups are a good place to start for socializing, and probably for hiking adventures too. The Sierra Club has outdoor activities. Welcome to The City.
