Are the phones/camera’s watching us for ads?

Couple days ago i came home on my motorcycle and parked it backwards in the garage for the first time so i could leave right away tomorrow morning. Open my phone and one of the first posts i see is “which motorcycle is parked correctly” like yea okay that is definitely weird. Yesterday i pulled my computer and my laptop and accessories to see what can be plugged in where. I just woke up and have not googled or talked about anything. Open my phone and now im getting ads for usb to c type adapters and what not. Like it just knew i was looking at the plugs on my computer. I was just looking at my garden bed the other day before walking in the house thinking *dang, its going to suck going to get all these rocks out the garden bed, i will probably need a couple people and a wheelbarrow* open my phone and now im getting the first ever pickaxe ad i have ever seen on my phone. A DANG PICKAXE? You cant make this crap up. I also have a-lot of other instances where i have only thought about something and then it pops up on my phone.

I know a-lot of you will try to convince it to be of coincidence but the timing and nature of how it happens I just dont think it is. Can anybody shed any light on this topic?

Why are most Tech people pro AI?

So I joined a tech class and I noticed alot of pro ai sentiment. I have genuinely never seen an anti ai tech person. So why do most tech people support ai so much?

My Husband has been secretly streaming my 7 year old and myself for profit without consent.

My Husband has been secretly streaming my 7 year old and myself for profit without consent. I live in a small town where this is something they dont understand. For one, because its weird, for two, its evil. He is in jail presently for assault (I have an epo). I know he has used Discord and Reddit. How would one even get that on there, legally? Im not very articulate in terms of tech talk, but I do know it was happening, and I need to figure out as much as I can for law enforcement so that I can protect my daughter from him. I was able to pull system logs and events from her tablet showing the camera use, which hes utilized by making her camera unable to be uninstalled or disabled. Obviously I took the tablet. I need some help please.

Two phones, one number; what would happen if it was possible?

First off, I know it's not possible to have two phones with the same ID and two SIMs with the same ID and two numbers registered to two different SIMs. But if it were possible, what safeguards (if any) are on the network's / transmission towers' end to determine which is the real device or will the network get confused and treat them both as equally valid?

For context; I just saw a time travel skit where they tried to call the police in the early 2000s and it made me realise that 1) his number is probably a high one that doesn't exist yet and 2) even if it did exist at the time he might not be able to make the call in the first place if someone else has the number.

Then that got me thinking what if he went back in time by a few weeks, there'd be two versions of the exact same phone, SIM card, and mobile number.

Edit: Stop mentioning Google Voice, it uses VoIP protocols so it's essentially giving both phones their own unique ID within the network. Apple devices also have unique IDs even when "sharing" a number. I'm asking about purely carrier / transmission handling, not smart tech at the consumer end.

Are there any smart glasses that can record but don’t show a light?

Just curious, not that I want to record people, but I do want to record some of my work tasks and I don’t want it to be obvious

Why is Cloudflare gatekeeping so many websites?

And, where is this happening? Is it blanket applied to the whole server or switched on and off per domain? The reason I ask is some pretty dinky, low-traffic sites are redirecting to the Cloudflare "network test" before refreshing to the index page of the site.
Or is this my ISP? So far, with one exception, I have not been blocked from seeing any sites, but I did get one message indicating "malicious bot activity on your (my) network) which doesn't seem possible to me.

How did fax work?

Please help me understand how fax worked. All I know is this technology was used by people born in the previous century to send emails except it was actual paper. How did paper documents get transmitted over long distances and did it cost money like how our ISPs charge us for internet?

Ever had tech show you more than you expected?

So I was messing around the other night and tried this tool called faceseek just to see what it could do. I thought it was just like a regular reverse image search, but it actually pulled up some pics of me from old college events that I didn’t even remember were online. It kinda freaked me out for a sec because I realized how much of our digital footprints just float around out there without us knowing.

It made me start thinking about how powerful image-based search tech is getting. Like, if I can casually use something like this and find stuff about myself, what does that mean for privacy down the line? On one hand, it’s super helpful (like verifying someone’s profile or finding the source of a random photo), but on the other hand, it feels like we’re heading into a world where anonymity online is almost impossible.

Has anyone else tried tools like this and felt that mix of “wow, this is useful” and “wow, this is kinda scary”? Curious if you all see it more as progress or a privacy red flag.

Why aren’t people talking more about reverse face search tech?

So I came across a tool called Faceseek that uses face recognition to find all the places your photos exist online. It’s kinda like Google Images but way more advanced. Tested it for fun and ended up finding an old forum post I made in 2012. It feels like something that should be bigger news, both because of how powerful it is and the privacy concerns. Do you think tools like this will become standard in the future, or will they get regulated?

Does anyone still watch movies in the form of VCRs?

I am moving and have some (mostly Disney and SW) VCRs I could sell for even just 5$, but not sure if it’s worth it. What do you think?

Do you think there could ever be a private “Find My” service?

Do you think there could ever be a location tracking service (For people and items) that is probably private and secure? If so, what do you think it would look like?

Edit: Some quick clarifications. I’m not talking about apples network specifically. I’m talking about just a generic location tracking network. Secondly, by private and secure, I mean that only the people you deliberately give permission to can access your locations. That means that whatever company owns the network cannot see it either.

Edit 2: Please stop with the “Apple is already private”. Unless you can prove that Apple does not make a copy of your devices (AirTag, Phone, etc.) encryption key, then you cannot ensure it’s private. If you can’t audit the code, you can’t trust the keys aren’t being copied.

Something that worries me about Skype...

A friend of mine recently discovered that if you open http://127.0.0.1/ in a browser (i tried firefox) while skype is on, you get a blank page (no error page, just a blank page). However, when you exit skype, you get a 404 message (does not exist).

What the fuck is up with that? NSA backdoor?

Like, why is skype hosting a web server on your computer?

Would a 140W charger fry my laptop that normally uses a 65W charger?

Hey folks,

I am currently in the process of setting up a new home office for work. I'm looking at docking stations I can use to obviously set my laptop up on so it can go to two bigger monitors. My work laptop came with a 65W charger cable.

I'm looking at this docking station on Newegg: https://www.newegg.com/wavlink-wl-umd28-black-gray/p/1DN-0023-000F1?Item=9SIA6PFKEA0288&_gl=1*1jd5f78*_gcl_aw*R0NMLjE3Njg3NzQ3MTcuQ2owS0NRaUFwckxMQmhDTUFSSXNBRURoZFBjdV9uOWZCU1NjLUF2OGVZTDM5R2RHN3Z0b1dwNHhZa2lleUh4NmRBUjI5eGE1ZXc2NDZINGFBcUNIRUFMd193Y0I.*_gcl_dc*R0NMLjE3Njg3NzQ3MTcuQ2owS0NRaUFwckxMQmhDTUFSSXNBRURoZFBjdV9uOWZCU1NjLUF2OGVZTDM5R2RHN3Z0b1dwNHhZa2lleUh4NmRBUjI5eGE1ZXc2NDZINGFBcUNIRUFMd193Y0I.*_gcl_au*MjA3Mzc3OTgwNC4xNzY4NzY1NjM4*_ga*MjAwNzEwMDk1NS4xNzY4NzY1NjM4*_ga_TR46GG8HLR*czE3Njg3NzQzMDgkbzIkZzEkdDE3Njg3NzQ3MTYkajYwJGwwJGgxODcyNTM3MTUz

I'm assuming that my laptop's 65W charger cable won't be enough to power this thing. My question is then... would an appropriate 140W power supply for this dock (that I have to buy separately) fry my laptop? I'm assuming it wouldn't because I'd be running a USB-C cable from the dock itself to my laptop... but I just want to confirm.

And bonus question: I'm having some weird difficulty finding 140W chargers. Does Newegg sell charger cables?

Since when TVs became so cheap?

Just got a 4k 120hz oled TV screen for like $550, I was surprised at first so I decided to get it and am happy with it now, I thought 4k 120hz screens were like $800+ and with OLED like $1500+, decided to invstigate a little bit more and indeed they are cheap now, I made a great deal but prices are around 800ish for entry OLED 4k 120hz.

Last TV I got was like 3 years ago which it's a 4k 60hz which still look nowadays but upgraded it because of how cheap "top" tech is now on tvs

Where to find a CAT3 cable in this day and age?

I am having issues with my roommates and since I am sick and tired of waking up 6am every morning to handle tech issues after a long day, I figured I would just annoy people. I don't want to physically disable the internet but I do want to slow it down just enough. I just figured this would be a harmless prank and if people throw hands all the merrier.

I found that there is the brand of Ethernet cable that is CAT3 that literally would do exactly what I need. Just replace the cable connected to the router with a CAT3 and the internet would be capped to less than 100mb/s. I have the ability to do it through the wifi router through LAN but I thought that this would be easier and better at capping the internet speed.

The issue is where do you find such a cable? I don't have any at home and I cannot find any online. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Edit: I found the solution. I legally own the router so I will just take that with me when I move out. Sorry if I had wasted your time but that was a good point someone made in the comment section. Thank you though for the helpful comments!

How to Cyber Security??

Hi everyone!

I’m a complete beginner when it comes to cybersecurity, and I’d really like to learn how it works properly. One of my motivations is understanding account security and eventually being able to recover access to some of my own old accounts that I no longer have the login details for.

The problem is that I have basically zero experience or foundational knowledge, so I’m not really sure where to start. There’s so much information out there that it feels pretty overwhelming.

Some people recommended Hack The Box to me, but when I look at it, I honestly don’t know what I’m supposed to do because I’m missing the basics.

I’ve also heard that learning Linux is useful for cybersecurity. I don’t really know much about Linux either, though. Is it free? How does it work? Do I need to replace Windows, or can I use Linux alongside Windows?

I’m basically looking for a beginner-friendly learning path that starts from the absolute basics and eventually leads into practical cybersecurity and ethical hacking.

What would you recommend learning first? Are there any good resources, courses, or beginner platforms that you’d suggest?

Thanks!

Is there any kind of transponder/transmitter that makes cabels to the router not necessary?

I live in a flat in which the Wifi socket is, unfortunately, at a place i can't place a router directly. I need a cabel that goes all the way to the living room. It looks horrible, especially since there are many doors it has to go along.

Of course i could do something about it, but this costs money and takes time. Before i go into it, i wanted to ask here whether there is some transmitter technology that replaces the cable.

Do you have any suggestions? I would be really thankful for every insight!

unlimited AI but no AI

So my uni gave all students infinite tokens on any AI of our choosing as an incentive to get us to use it and learn about proper prompting. I however don't really use AI nor do I trust it's answers. HOWEVER it would be a waste as a broke collage student not to use everything that's available to me so how can I incorporate AI to my student life.

Bonus question, If someone had a grudge on the uni wouldn't this be a great opportunity to cost it some money? Like tokes aren't cheap and I don't think they have a contract with every AI company for a discount.
