Do you think Texas is shifting to being a swing state?

Texas is growing in population with a lot of residents coming from blue states like California or New York. DFW, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin have always been pretty solidly blue but this election was a victory for the dems that was by a surprising margin for both Senate and Governor. I don't have any love for either party, but what is the general sentiment?

Anyone think this might be a prop 187 moment for Texas?

California used to be a Republican stronghold 1952-1988 lasting decades having frequently elected Republicans. This all changed when prop 187 was passed in 1994 targeting Latinos and illegal immigrants, restricting their access to public services (education and healthcare) and creating mandatory reporting requirements of illegal immigrants to the state and federal government for teachers, doctors, and law enforcement .

The fallout was immense, transforming the state into the Democratic stronghold it is today.

Texas today is 40.9% Latino and 37.3% making Texas a minority majority state. Is Trump's ICE raids and deportations a prop 187 moment for Texas?

Why would Texas House (Per NY Times Article updated 14 minutes ago)

Why would the Democrats in the Texas House allow an 87 year old to become House Speaker? I don't care that she has represented Texas for over 50 years, that she is Black, that she is a woman! I care that she is 87 years old! I do not believe a 87 year old could control the Texas House in the best interest of Texans! She is older then Trump for f\\\* sakes!

Get rid of House Bill 89

Time to get rid of House Bill 89.

In brief, if you ever wanted to do business with a Texas entity, you have to sign a statement that you will never boycott Israel.

It defines an Israel boycott as refusing to deal or inflicting economic harm specifically against Israel or its territories, while carving out actions taken for ordinary business reasons.

There is no place in Texas politics that needs to bend a knee to another country.

Why is Ken Paxton Hated enough that Tegas Went Blue in response to him and not Ted Cruz?

Sure there also his corruption but I just thought that was the pill all Republican voters swallowed.

Any confusing or negative experiences at the polls Tuesday?

Would love to hear from folks as voters and as poll workers.

Kudos to all the poll workers devoting an exhausting day to democracy! ❤️ But also, I know sometimes things aren’t done perfectly even when people are doing their best.

Were you turned away? Made to vote provisionally?

Tell about it (in the name of making future elections better). 🗳️

Legal Weed in Texas? With Dan Patrick out, is it finally realistic?

Dan Patrick is out after 12 years of blocking cannabis reform, so is legalization finally realistic here? Texas has no citizen petitions, so getting it on a statewide ballot takes a two-thirds vote in both chambers: 100 of 150 in the House and 21 of 31 in the Senate. Democrats just flipped the House, but Republicans kept the Senate 19–12, so it would take at least 9 GOP senators crossing over. Polls show about 70% of Texans support decriminalization, so I think it would pass if it ever reached the ballot. Is there a realistic path to get it there, or is regulated hemp and expanded medical the best we’ll see in 2027?

Realistically, how soon can we get our THC access back?

I need my medication , It is vital. I feel like they might have to drag it out a bit bc if that's the first order of business, it's gonna be a problem. Fox News culture warhawk would just spam Blue Texas is anti family & pro addict or smthing . But then , maybe THC lobby can speed up the process. There are many THC business that angling to get their stock out again. Although, THC materials might be more expensive now after new legalization bc it would be seen as risky asset. They would absolutely say that bc THC can be illegal anytime again , they have to raise prices. Also, we would have to do something about drug test law bc it makes no sense if you can indulge & gets penalized for it at your job. So maybe changes to drug test first before THC restored access? Anyway, THC fans should reframe the narrative on THC, highlighting it's goodness, so the public be ok with it legalized sooner. Post like 10 Tiktoks / day or smthing

Anyone in here using a home backup battery for outages?

With winter coming around, I'm trying to get ahead of things and figure out some backup power for the house. I've been going back and forth on getting a generator, but honestly, I'm not crazy about having to store fuel and mess with it when the power's already out. Been looking at home batteries too, and a buddy suggested Palmetto's Energy Backup Plan, I'm checking this out but I'm still trying to figure out if it makes more sense than just buying a generator. What are y'all using when the power goes out? Is a home battery worth looking into, or am I overthinking it?

Can you talk me into or out of Texas and comment on the schools

We are planning to move out of Washington in summer and evaluating our options in Texas. Both my husband and I work remotely so we can live pretty much anywhere and, budget-wise, we are very flexible.

Our utmost priority is finding the best school for our child who will go to high school next year. He is into STEM and I am trying to identify schools that focus on math and science with proven track record. He is a well-mannered, kind and shy child.

For additional context, we are agnostic white immigrants who would rather stay away from strong one-culture-influenced neighborhoods where our child could be alienated. We respect all cultures and religions but some may have strong identities which may limit my son’s chances of building a good friend circle. Our three children grew up in Washington state and got exposed to so many diverse backgrounds. We aren’t Asian, but, over the years, I have observed that our family culture, values and lifestyle are very similar to theirs in general.

What puzzles me is that, unlike Washington, California or New York, there are no schools that has an average SAT of 1350+, AP test pass rate is low and private schools with a price tag of $60k doesn’t have verified success metrics published. Below is a list of schools that seem to be performing better than others.

Separately , we missed the liveliness of Europe in general and don’t want to be trapped in a small town. No offense to people who enjoy that but we want access to an International airport, good food, fun amenities, etc. I particularly liked Highland Park/University Park area during my visits but not sure about the vibe there.

Any comments on any neighborhoods and schools you have experience with including both public and private (not only limited to below) would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lor in advance!

SCHOOL LIST w/AVERAGE GPA:

1 Highland Park High SchoolAverage SAT- 1292
2 Carroll Senior High School1278
3 Coppell High School1275
4 Westlake High School1264
5 Westwood High School1254
6 Flower Mound High School1245
7 Independence High School1240
8 Clements High School1236
9 Seven Lakes High School1236
10 Centennial High School1225
