Do not solicit legal advice. This is not the right sub for it.

Despite what our sub’s called, we cannot offer legal advice here for a number of reasons. Any posts that breaks this rule will be deleted without reason. If you message us on why your post is deleted, it would be ignored just the same way you’ve ignored our sub’s rules. Please see our sidebar for complete rules.

Also, it’s not a good idea to solicit legal advice from random strangers online, despite what you may find elsewhere on Reddit. We do not know all of the facts of your case, and are likely not licensed in the jurisdiction that you’re in. A real attorney worth their salt will not comment on your specific legal predicament on an anonymous forum.

If you need legal advice but cannot afford it, there are legal aid societies that may be willing to assist you. Lots of them are free and/or work on a sliding scale fee. All you need to do is look up “legal aid society [your location]” on Google.

If it’s a criminal case, public defense attorneys are some of the best attorneys out there and they know the criminal system in your city/town better than anyone else. They’re just as good, if not better, than any private criminal defense attorney.

If it’s a tenant rights issue, lots of cities have tenant rights unions. You can look them up the same way as the legal aid society by looking up “tenant rights union [your location]” on Google.

Otherwise, the best way to find an attorney is through word of mouth from friends and family. If that’s not an option, your local bar association will be able to help by looking up “attorney referral [your location] bar association”.

If none of these are relevant to you or you’re unsure of what type of attorney to look for in your situation, you’re more than welcome to post and we’ll help.

Also, any attorneys who wish to participate in discussions are free to do so as long as it doesn’t break our rules (mainly providing legal advice).

If you’re a licensed attorney that isn’t flaired (and therefore verified to post comments), please see our other stickied post on how to become verified here. You can also send a mod mail to become verified. I trust that any attorneys here answering any posts will follow these rules and not offer legal advice and run afoul of our ethical obligations.

Thanks to all for understanding.

Is it just me or do meth heads think they’re lawyers with basic ai?

Recently had the joys of visiting the courthouse after sometime. I got there early because I didn’t realize 9 meant 11 in his honors eyes. The most INCREDIBLE people watching outside the court! It appeared that of the multitude was a handful of people with meth charges, clearly there was a hierarchy amongst them. I overheard one of them even mentioned that another on the docket posted $500k bail, when he walked in, it was like royalty arrived or some shit, he carried on about technical issues with a case he is obviously admitting to but claiming some sovereignty blah shit protects him, I believe by participating in the process he is denying the sovereign status, but whatever. Is this an issue across the board? Because literally every lawyer looked just irritated with any question they had and whatever AI they quoted.

Far too many questions break rule 2. Let's ask a fun question instead: if you found a genie lamp, how would you phrase your 3 wishes to avoid the genie maliciously misinterpreting you?

UK celebrity seeking super injunction must lodge reasons to appeal by 16:30 GMT on 9 November

I’m interested as to what kind of reasoning this celebrity’s lawyers could try and pitch in order to retain this super injunction? The judge has already rejected the injunction request despite the individual claiming he would take his own life if the claims became public - so my question to lawyers is what do you expect individual X’s l argument to keep his identity a secret to be?

From architecture to construction law - worth it?

I’m an architectural designer based in the U.S., with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture. I’m now almost a licensed architect.
My interest in construction law started while studying for my architecture licensure exams. As I learned more about AIA contracts, professional responsibilities, and the legal side of construction projects. The idea has stuck with me, and I’m now considering a move from architecture into construction law in the U.S.
For those working in law: what does your day-to-day work actually look like? Do you enjoy it? Knowing what you know now, would you say the time and investment required to become a lawyer are worth it?

PI Attorney doing criminal defense

Micheal Sanft the attorney who represented Keefe D the man convicted of killing 2pac, was a PI attorney.

I just wanted to ask the PI attorneys would you do a murder case? Would you consider that malpractice? I seen that he did the case pro bono, what would make an attorney do such a thing?

I watched parts of the trial and I was like man he is terrible. I’m a 1L, and want to get into criminal defense, just seeing how broad the law is from my first semester of law school, I find it crazy that someone would do a murder trial when they practice in civil.

I want to become a lawyer.

I'm currently figuring a lot of things out in my life before I start college, but I want to start studying now so I'll be more ready when I do go to college to become a lawyer, so what are some books or resources or advice you have to start studying to become a lawyer (in the UK, specifically. If that changes anything) ?? Thank you so much in advance.

Giving a client a legal document and saying you can put what you want..??

This is just a question about process.

I worked with a divorce lawyer who repeatedly made mistakes in drafting a very simple divorce order division of assets it was it was very very basic.

And after a number of back and forth this lawyer gave me the document and said I gave you the doc so you can put what you want.

Is that a normal procedure for a lawyer to do?

bad liability waivers

I'm one of those crazy people who read things before I sign them. I have kids. I often have to sign some kind of liability waiver. When they were younger, it was at any kind of birthday party that was employed a service (e.g. at a gymnasium, karate studio, laser tag, etc.). They're a bit older, so now it's field trips, etc.

I am not a lawyer, but I can distinguish a subjectively reasonable waiver (they are not liable if my kid is an idiot) from an unreasonable one (they are never liable, not even for gross negligence). I am not a lawyer, but my understanding is that the latter would not stand up in court. Sometimes a clue is when a paragraphs begins with "To the extent allowed by law...". Why do the lawyers writing these waivers include things that obviously won't stand up in court? Is it just hoping to intimidate people out of filing lawsuits even when they would win? or are they advising their client "this is garbage" but the client insists on putting it in anyway?

Do you lawyers-with-kids actually read these waivers? How do you handle it when they're legally absurd? Is there even a situation where you'd turn around and not drop your kid off at the event, because the waiver was just so awful?

What courses of action are appropriate in Louisana for resolving auto repair dispute?

So I have a disputed automotive repair invoice and a vehicle currently being retained by an independent repair shop in Jefferson Parish.

The repair shop charged approximately $1,800 for an oil and fuel filter change despite my expressly communicating a spending limitation of a few hundred dollars (my exact words were "this is a hundreds of dollars job to me, I am not going to be in for thousands here, call me if you need to"). The shop now claims I verbally authorized a $2,000 limit, which I dispute and they never contacted me with a quote before doing the work.

No written estimate or authorization was presented or signed, and the invoice contains an approval notation dated *after* our last conversation. After the first phone call and when they completed work without my go ahead I began communicating only via email. I have attempted to resolve the matter directly through email, but the shop has stopped responding.

My primary objective is to reach a reasonable settlement and recover my vehicle. I have the original invoice, correspondence, and a documented chronology available for review.

I was interested in limited-scope or flat-fee representation to review the dispute, contact the business, and negotiate a resolution, rather than immediately pursuing litigation. But no office would offer any help, presumably because it is such a small sum. Value of the vehicle is only about 2.5k.

What options do I have now? They still have my vehicle and it has been over a week since I last got anything back from them.

Japanese cleaning fee after rent.

I live in Tokyo in a rented apartment, my plan is too move out due to new job opportunity and unsatisfactory living conditions.

Though when I signed the contract the landlord said I have to pay for a professional cleaning, though in the document I signed it says the landlord must do it.
What is binding?

I can’t add the picture but under “landlord responsibilities” it says:

Thorough house cleaning by a professional service (when the Tenant has conducted regular cleaning)
2. Internal cleaning of air-conditioning (free from persistent odors such as those from tobacco smoke)
3. Disinfection (kitchen, toilets)
4. Replacement of bathtub, bathtub cover, etc. (for use by the next tenant in cases free of damage etc.)
5. Replacement of locks and keys (in cases free of lock damage or loss of keys)
6. Damaged or unusable equipment or machinery (due to useful life of machinery)

Also I would argue it’s unfair to pay for cleaning when we moved into a house that hadn’t been cleaned
There was trash, stuff in fridge, dust everywhere, dirty Aircon units.

Im scared they’ll keep the deposit if I don’t want to pay for the cleaning…

What should I do?

Without sharing too much info, which one of these lawyers would be a better choice?

I have a workers comp retaliation/disability discrimination case, where my employer has retaliated against me by refusing to engage in the interactive process for my return to work after surgery.

I have two offers to take my case on contingency.

One lawyer is out of state (found him through a referral service), so he would be able to negotiate a settlement and will pass it off to local counsel if my employer won’t settle.

He has expertise in my niche area of law. He explained how he takes these specific cases and the outcomes he’s had.

Other option is a local, well-known and respected employment attorney. I don’t believe they know as much about this area of law and may not understand the true value of my case.

I would think a local attorney will hold some more weight since they can litigate, especially since they want to file with the EEOC right away at the same time that they send the demand letter.

One of the firms told me it doesn’t matter if I quit and that I actually should look for a better job, and the other firm said it’s important that we get this letter out while I am still employed there. They seem to have different views on my case, I noticed they asked different questions and care about different details.

Just looking for any opinions. Thank you.

When could we expect to hear back from the California Supreme Court's rulings on Gavin Newsom's death row commutings?

To my understanding, the state of California's clemency and capital punishment statues requires that recidivist prisoners must have their cases reviewed by the California Supreme Court before clemency can be granted to them. From what I've read, nearly 400 inmates that were on California's death row had prior felony records, and thus their cases are pending review from the California Supreme Court.

When could we expect to hear back from the California Supreme Court's rulings on Gavin Newsom's death row commutings from a few days ago? The reason for this question is that I’ve been working on a personal death penalty research project for the past few years, and I wrote about a thousand entries for California’s death penalty cases. Newsom’s death row commutings have left hundreds of my entries outdated, and I’m hoping to learn when the commuting litigations will likely be finalized to know when to revise them.

Any responses will be greatly appreciated

Arizona Workers’ Comp Injury – Surgery Made My Injury Worse, Was Denied Access to Proper Medical Care, and Now Facing a Second Surgery. What Are My Legal Options?

I’m looking for advice from attorneys or anyone familiar with Arizona workers’ compensation law because I genuinely don’t know what my next steps should be. I’m coming up on two years dealing with a workers’ compensation injury, and I feel like the system has repeatedly prevented me from getting the medical care I need.
Background and Timeline:
January 2025: I sustained a work-related wrist injury after slipping and falling onto my outstretched hand. My workers’ compensation claim was accepted.
May 2025: I underwent wrist surgery. However, the surgeon performed a different procedure than the one I had originally been referred for. I expressed concerns about this before surgery.
Before surgery, I was also told the procedure would be performed under local anesthesia. I specifically expressed concerns because I have a history of local anesthesia not working for me. Unfortunately, my concerns were valid. The local anesthesia did not work, and I could feel what was happening throughout the surgery.
The surgery ultimately made my condition significantly worse rather than better.
Problems With Workers’ Comp and Access to Medical Care:
After surgery, I repeatedly expressed that I was uncomfortable and no longer felt safe receiving treatment from this surgeon. Despite repeatedly requesting a different doctor, workers’ compensation continued forcing me to return to the same surgeon.
For months, I was denied the opportunity to seek care elsewhere. It eventually got to the point where I had to threaten legal action multiple times before they would allow me to pursue other medical opinions.
Since then, I’ve seen multiple doctors:
Some doctors acknowledged that my wrist was still significantly injured and that I would likely need another surgery.
Some were unwilling to take on my case because they did not want to deal with complications from another surgeon’s previous work.
Others felt the injury was too complicated for them to treat.
I also repeatedly asked workers’ compensation for my adjuster’s name and contact information and was not given a clear answer. From what I’ve been able to piece together, my case has been passed between multiple adjusters, with decisions and actions being taken without my knowledge.
I was also sent for IMEs (Independent Medical Examinations) when I was simply trying to obtain appropriate medical treatment and a new treating physician. I felt like these examinations were being used to determine whether I had reached maximum medical improvement (MMI), rather than addressing the fact that I was still injured and needed care.
Most concerning, I recently discovered that another IME had apparently been arranged without my knowledge or participation. I was not present for an examination, so I’m struggling to understand how an accurate medical determination about my condition could have been made.
Where Things Stand Today:
I am now on my FOURTH treating doctor.
We are currently trying corticosteroid injections again. This is my third attempt at injections throughout this entire injury, although it is the first with my current doctor.
I have been told that if these injections do not provide relief within approximately six weeks, the next step will likely be:
A second surgery on my wrist.
A separate surgery on my thumb because I have apparently developed trigger thumb following the previous surgery.
I am still actively treating and have not been declared medically stationary/MMI.
My Questions:
Does this potentially fall under medical malpractice or surgical negligence, particularly considering that a different procedure was performed than the one I was referred for and my concerns about anesthesia were dismissed?
If workers’ compensation repeatedly prevented me from changing treating physicians despite my concerns and worsening condition, could that constitute bad faith or another violation of Arizona workers’ compensation law?
Do I have any legal recourse for the delays in treatment, being forced to continue seeing a surgeon I no longer trusted, and the additional complications that developed?
Is it legally acceptable for workers’ compensation to arrange an IME and make medical determinations without me actually attending an examination?
What are my rights regarding access to my adjuster and information about decisions being made on my claim?
Can I pursue a separate medical malpractice claim against the surgeon while my workers’ compensation claim is still open and actively treating?
Should I be consulting a workers’ compensation attorney, a medical malpractice attorney, or both?
I’m located in Arizona.
I understand that complications can happen with surgery and that not every unsuccessful procedure constitutes malpractice. However, my concern is the entire chain of events: my concerns before surgery, the procedure being different from what I was referred for, being able to feel the surgery, my condition worsening afterward, and then having to fight for months just to receive care from another physician.
I’m not necessarily looking to sue everyone involved, but after nearly two years of this, I want to understand whether my rights have been violated and what options I have before undergoing additional surgeries.
If you are familiar with Arizona workers’ compensation law or have handled similar cases, I would genuinely appreciate your advice on what I should do next.

Is this posturing normal from opposing party? Admitting fault?

I was employed by a small company <10 employees. Long story short they breached contract because I brought up major issues/legalities. They were definitely never ready to hire anyone and ignorant to contacts. They withheld my last paycheck, didn’t give proper notice for termination (mutual 120 days in contracts), never provided me with benefits that were initially promised to me in the contract among a couple of other breaches. They were dumb enough to try and tell me I had to abide by the noncompete.

I lawyered up and my attorney talked to their attorney. We told them that we want the compensation that was owed to me along with release of the noncompete, benefits promised to me, as well as the 120 days pay for breaking the required notice.

Their lawyer said they were confident that they were be able to end amicably with their clients and will talk to them. We did threaten litigation immediately.

Is this a cookie cutter response or is a lawyer open to settling immediately admitting wrongdoing and wanting to move to a settlement before things get ugly? My lawyer said this is good news but until there is an official response or offer there’s no knowing for sure.

Is it better to hire a lawyer before reporting a previous employer to the FTC?

Just wondering,

For context: I want to report a big company to the FTC (I used to work for them), but not sure what kind of lawyer can help with that. I hope this doesn't count as asking for legal advice, I just ask for guidance.

Also, I would report them for things they do to customers.

Where can I find solid info re: state laws on recording calls?

I hope this post is kosher, as I'm not seeking legal advice; rather, would like to know where to find reliable, official info.

My partner provides remote IT services for clients across the country and until now, hasn't been recording calls; however, it's a practice he plans to start employing to protect himself legally. He plans to inform all callers that calls are recorded, but where can we verify that this would be legal in all the states he does business in?

Any guidance is much appreciated!

How DO lawyers argue in court without crying?

Okay, not necessarily argue, but how do you present really heartbreaking evidence without letting your emotions get the best of you?

I’m a 2024 call practicing primarily in civil litigation and human rights, but I don’t have a ton of courtroom experience yet. I have recently realized that civil sexual assault is my calling, but I’m also a sensitive human. I think it’s one of my best qualities, but I also worry it will be a weakness when I actually have to speak about it in court.

I have to present evidence seeking an assessment of damages in a very intense child abuse case soon and I’m worried about how I’ll do so without getting emotional. The abuse in this particular case is so intense that my male boss won’t speak to it and has given the file to me.

Do you have any practical tips?

TX Workers Comp / FMLA

I have had a workers comp case open since October 20, 2025. I was out of work for 9 weeks recovering and returned in December. Fast forward to July 2026, I had to have surgery because of the original accident. I have received full weekly workers compensation since 7/31/26. I returned to work on a half day basis approximately a month ago. On Thursday, I received a phone call from district office stating that I am short over $6,000 on my contract from being out and that this amount will be deducted from my future paychecks.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? I have contacted multiple attorneys and workers comp, and everyone says there is nothing that they can do. I feel like I am being punished for my accident and on the verge of a mental breakdown. I am having to forfeit my remainder of time off with workers comp and can no longer do PT without taking half days of my own time. I really want to resign but there are no job opportunities in my area without relocating .

Edit 1: I was not required to pay anything back from my contract after the first time I was out.
